Sooner or later we're going to have to make them work the field. 2 flubbed punts and a big return on the kickoff after the score. At least the offense looked better. Still a big mistake on the snap though. Defense is going to have to step up. Soon.

jknezek

And the flag for holding on JHU gets picked up. Like they need the help right now...

jknezek

Defense can't tackle. This a problem.

jknezek

Getting tired of being the only team flagged for holding. Every big play. Holding on us. Their only flag? Picked up. It's getting a bit obvious when you have a home team, in the first game of the season, not getting a single flag in the first half.

These officials are laughable. And the worst part is JHU is good enough. They don't need the refs to be doing this. It just pulls the game down.

jknezek

Second half and I lost the video. Might be an omen.

Just checked the score ... 35-14 JHU ... doable, but it might be tough for the Generals.  Go W&L!

yeah. I've still got the audio. 35-21 now. But we need defense. Finally got a penalty called on JHU. All it took was almost breaking Charlie Nelson's legs after he got rid of the ball.

It is called Homerwood for a reason.  Generals lacrosse lost a DI semifinal lacrosse game there... on a bad call... there is a photo that floats around showing how bad a call...

Tough game, Generals had the yips a bit at the beginning.  Need to dare hopkins to throw the ball.  First preseason game though...

Defensively it's not pretty. The offense is working ok, but I'm interested to see the personnel. We seem to be using different backs every 7.5 minutes of game time or so. Not what I expected as we saw almost nothing of Hollerith and nothing of Hinckle since the first half of the first quarter. It looks almost like a game plan you would use in a scrimmage except Nelson has been in almost the whole time except the traditional series for Sgro in the first half and I'd assume he'll get another one in the 4th.

I don't want to know what's up with the punter. Those first two were ugly but short or long field it didn't seem to matter in terms of stopping the Jays. Also need to work on kick coverage. But that's typical since we use so many underclassmen for those roles with our roster size.

It's certainly true that HSC has lost as many conference  games the last 4 years as they had in prior 8. They've also won 2 ODAC Championships. While some may consider HSC as "slipping". No ODAC team has matched HSC's success over the same time frame.

The "Game" 60 wins and counting...

Well. Not W&L's best game. The defense didn't have an answer for JHU. Other than the 2 picks, JHU just marched up and down the field and even the picks were deep in our own end. We didn't bring guys down at first contact and lost a lot of 1 on 1 tackles. Despite JHU's relatively new Oline, we didn't get a lot of penetration either. You can't get away with all that against a team as good as JHU.

3 punts for 60 yards. Uggh. The best thing you can say about that is both stinker punts came on the first two series and the offense did much better after that as did the punter in his only other chance.

The offense was OK. They lost a couple drives to mistakes, and more than a few to penalties rightly or wrongly. The start was not good and it was too much of a hole to dig out of.

On the bright side though, W&L's offense is going to be hard to stop this year. They went at least 6 running backs deep, didn't use Hinckle or Hollerith seriously, though they did give Chess a workout. And as deep as they went they still moved the ball well. With less laundry this would have been a better game, but it was what it was and JHU deserved the fairly easy win.

don't understand why Hollerith only gets 2 carriers.

Me neither. Maybe he had a knock. I didn't get the whole running back rotation. But when you saw the way the flags were flying and the way we couldn't stop them, it's possible he just decided not to worry much about it and tried to make sure no one got hurt. On to Sewanee. Not going to dwell on it. We were a dog at JHU and we didn't play well enough to get an upset. Would have really liked to see that game in Lexington without the home cooking. Don't think it would have changed the outcome, but it would have been a really good game.

He really seems to be limiting carries.

Generals are about where I think they should be.  They have an unique offense with some class players, not the depth to provide massive quality on both sides of the ball.  They are closer to top 20/15 than in the past and need to keep challenging themselves.

Loss takes away lots of potential things... no home playoff game... hard first round opponent (if they win the odac)... no at large bid...

It also gives the generals some freedom.  You don't have to go perfect in the odac, just need to win the odac.  Less pressure during the CMS game.
