d3worker,
Being "let  go" is a nice term to use, however, if you actually knew Mike Clark and the entire story you would understand that after being with Frank Beamer for many, many seasons Frank (not just at VT.. did you know that? I bet not)  was forced to turn over his ENTIRE crew to save his own job.  Sometimes these tough decisions are made to save ones own A__, I know they're done within the company I work for so to make it sound like Clark was fired is not quite right.  As a recruit I was more impressed by Clark as an 0-10 coach than I EVER was by the other coaching staffs around the ODAC.. in fact  RMC was one of the worst.  Let's not throw stones here,  the players all know how much trash the RMC coaching staff has said about Bridgewater, it's not a secret on how ugly they get with recruiting.  ::)

Wait a miniute....................are you saying RMC still has a football team?!?!

Yeah, I'll give you that many of the other school's coaches have a great deal more experience and success on their resume than do W and L's. I exaggerated a bit (who doesn't on this board), but my point was also in reference to years past at W & L. Beginning in the '04 season, Miriello, who was previously Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator, brought back a former W & L coach to head the defense in Brian Newberry. That freedom has allowed Miriello to become more of a true "Head Coach." On the offensive side of the ball, he brought in former Auburn assistant Bert O'Neal (W & L '02 grad, captain), who's offense has taken on a new form and enjoyed a greater deal of success. Last year's team won 6 games for the first time in almost 20 yrs, and this year's team is well on the way to that and more. My point behind my earlier statement was that these new coaching influences have brought about a new mindset in Lexington that is being reflected on the field. That's not to say I don't respect the resume's of other ODAC coaches, but rather am noticing a profound difference with these two new coordinators at the helm.

Forma80,
It's just ashame most of the W&L campus won't notice the change in the football program.. afterall it's pretty far behind lacrose in popularity on campus.. which is a true shame.. maybe the Eagles can bring a few fans to the stadium next week!  ;)

I think it will be hard pressed to find 2 coaches as good or better then Clark and Colbert. Their resume's speak for themselves. I also feel that is a great recruiting tool. If you can't play for VA Tech why not play for there ex-defensive coordinator. As most of us have seen over the years, Colbert's play-calling is second to none. If you need eveidence just look at the "sky-play".

Since Foster just started his 10th year as coordinator, that puts Clark there a long time ago.....I didn't think he was that old since his daughter is a college student.

Llama - thanks for the kind words...I don't care what Kid says, you're a good guy.

wright,
yes, a lot of students leave at halftime, and yes a lot of them are wearing some sort of tie (and look good doing it) as you all like to stress, but as far as sheer attendance numbers i'm actually curious to see where all of they schools rank. do they count all the fans at HSC who "watch" the game from up above at the tailgates that don't seem to care when the game begins and ends? You guys that love doing the statistics around here, you wanna check out the avg. attendance from each schools from the last few years? That'd be an interesting analysis.

i also recognize that is certainly an inexact science as the attendance is usually a gross approximation, and can be very far off from the true amount of fans in the stands.

I do know Some Northern Football fans who can party with the best off 'em in D3 but still found this to be Hilarious! :D

Northern vs. Southern Football

Women's Accessories:
NORTH: Chap Stick in back pocket and a $20 bill in the front pocket.
SOUTH: Louis Vuitton duffel with two lipsticks, waterproof mascara, and a fifth of Captain Morgan/Crown. Money is not necessary - that's what dates are for.

Stadium Size:
NORTH: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people.
SOUTH: High school football stadiums hold 20,000 people.

Campus Decor:
NORTH: Statues of founding fathers.
SOUTH: Statues of Heisman tropy winners.

Homecoming Queen:
NORTH: Also a physics major.
SOUTH: Also Miss America.

Cheerleaders:
NORTH: If you are slightly coordinated, you make the varsity squad.
SOUTH: You begin cheer camp at age two, complete with ballet, dance, & gymnastic training.

Getting Tickets:
NORTH: 5 days before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus and purchase tickets.
SOUTH: 16 months before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus & put name on the waiting list.

Friday Classes After a Thursday Night Game:
NORTH: Students and teachers not sure they're going to the game, because they have classes on Friday.
SOUTH: Teachers cancel Friday classes because they don't want to see the few hung-over students that might actually make it to class.

Parking:
NORTH: An hour before game time, the University opens the campus for game parking.
SOUTH: RVs sporting their school flags begin arriving on Wednesday for the weekend festivities. The really faithful arrive on Tuesday. (Skoal, Kid, Hug)

Game Day:
NORTH: A few students party in the dorm and watch ESPN on TV.
SOUTH: Every student wakes up, has a beer for breakfast, and rushes over to where ESPN is and waves to the Northerners.

Tailgating:
NORTH: raw meat on a grill, beer or wine, listening to local radio station with truck tailgate down.
SOUTH: 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up a dawn. Cooking accompanied by live performance by "Dave Matthews Band," who come over during breaks and ask for a hit off the bottle of bourbon.

Getting to the Stadium:
NORTH: You ask "Where's the stadium?" When you find it, you walk right in.
SOUTH: When you are near it, you'll hear it. On game day it becomes the state's third largest city.

Concessions:
NORTH: Drinks served in a paper cup, filled to the top with soda.
SOUTH: Drinks served in a plastic cup with the home team's mascot on it, filled less than halfway with soda, to ensure enough room for Captain Morgan/Crown.

The Smell of the Air After the First Score:
NORTH: Nothing changes.
SOUTH: Fireworks, with a touch of Captain Morgan/Crown.

Forma,

Here's some info I found on the conference as a whole for last season.

"The Old Dominion Athletic Conference, on top for 13 of the past 15 years, returned to take the attendance crown for Division III by averaging 2,883 after being eclipsed for the past two seasons. The ODAC outdistanced second-place finisher Minnesota Intercollegiate Conference at 2,876, with last year's champion Ohio Athletic Conference taking third with 2,829. The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Conference was fourth at 2,638, followed by the America Southwest Conference (2,421)."

I credit the reclaiming of the crown to the traveling Stone Station  ;)

Emory & Henry's average attendance at a home game last season was estimated at 4,337 fans, which was tops in the ODAC and 7th in Division III.  St John's was Number 1 with more than 7800 fans a game.

And this year the Wasps are averaging 4,950 fans in their three home games, in which they were outscored 123 to 19.

Those are some loyal fans, I expect nothing less this weekend!

Was looking at the probable starters for the Wasps this weekend, and no wonder they are 0-6.

They are starting six freshmen on defense (DT, DE, LB, LB, CB, SS).

On offense, their offensive line is sort of odd (size wise):

Left Tackle is 6'6'' / 344
Right Tackle is 6'1'' / 274
Center is 6'4'' / 310

But the inside guys are only 6'0'' / 194 (LG) and 6'1'' 239 (RG).  Wow, that's small!

I still think Todd Woods (QB), Brennan Stewart (WR), and Jerad Jackson (WR) can do some damage.  But oddly enough, their running back is their leading receiver (Andrew Hemp --> 23 catches, 198 yards, 2 TDs).

Woods' (2004 All-ODAC 1st Team) stats still baffle me.  Only four TDs to six interceptions, completing only 49% of his passes (compared to 25 TDs, 10 INTs, and 60% a year ago).

Who knows what will happen with the weather conditions ... calling for rain!  A recently busted steam line pipe near the field won't help matters.
