cOOrs,

Traditionally we wait to make predictions about a game score until the week of the game.  But then again when you play four weeks worth of nobodies the fan has nothing to look forward to until the week five test.  But then again by all means get your hopes of an ODAC title up again this year with victories over non-contenders because when you play a quality team the gloves will come off again this year.  :o

I disagree with BC posters contending that the qb position is not critical to the success of our offense.  Look back over the last two years and think of games where our offense got shut down when teams were able to take away the passing game (usually against athletic defenses).  Too many times over the last two years teams got away with putting 8 in the box for the better part of games.  Some of these games we found a way to win, some we lost.  And I will argue that the talent on the line and at the other skill positions (WR's and RB's) has been as good if not better the past two years than it was in 2001 and 2002.

Now, when we had elite division 3 qb's (Lutz and Jenkins) we were able to make big plays consistently enough that we dictated what any defense could do against us, not the other way around.   We were not nearly as streaky (hot and cold) as in '03 and '04.  I think to the other posters' points we can probably win the ODAC again with a pedistrian-type of qb.  But to get back to the level we want to get to we need a true playmaker.  Here's hoping that Lewis is that guy.

(And guys, please don't take this as my "knock" on what Wakefield did.  He was a very tough and a pretty talented kid. I liked him.  We won a lot of games with him and even got to the semi's in '03.  I just don't place him in the same category of Robbie and Jason due to the fact that he was prone to long cold streaks.)

not a knock on the skill guys at bridgewater at all, because they are obviously very talented players; some of the best in the ODAC. but marcus, dre, pj, van, and davon were not meant to play d3 football. and the other players at the skill positions that year were exceptional d3 players. throw in a OL that allows 6 sacks in 9 regular season games and a fast, hard hitting "relentless" defense and you've got a national championship contender.
like i said, that's not a knock on this year's guys at all, because i feel like they've got a great team w/ great potential. i'm just saying it's not often that a team like that 2001 bridgewater team gets put together.

o.k., but my point is you need a dynamic guy under center to get the ball to those guys.  I mean how many clutch plays did Lutz make during the 2001 run?  It was unreal.  And yes, those skill guys around him were great.  It's just my opinion that we have similar quality and depth now at those positions.  Lewis is the key to the castle........... (and it would help if the defense is improved.)

We are definitely deeper at skill positions this coming season than we were in 2001.  Our top players in 2001 might have been "better" than the ones this year, but we are certainly deeper this season.  We are eight-deep at receiver, and six-deep at back.

At TE, Corey Hulsebus has the potential to put up huge numbers (deeping on how much we throw to that position).  Van Williams had only 15 catches for 221 yards in 15 games his final two seasons (2000 and 2001), albeit seven of the 15 catches were touchdowns :)

Therin lies BC's newest play "The TE Screen"! Intended or not.  ;)

Truthfully though, Kid is right about Holsebus. There is not a LB in the ODAC who can cover him off the line and he has hands like glue. I will make a bold prediction and say, "barring injury, he will have 3 TDs by the end of the Hanover game Sept. 17th. Now less see if I have a clue what I'm talking about?

Llama,
If he only has 2 TD's, does that mean you're clueless?

Now CBE you know I'm already clueless so I guess for me it was a win-win prediction  either way. ;D

RM,
I guess I am not the only one to be willing to put the Franchise nomer on our QBs.

As quoted by Coach Clark in a Roanoke Times Article today:
"Both those kids have the potential to be Franchise-type players at this level." ;)

And yes I have no life, thats why I post soooooo much. LOL!

Checking in folks...I can't respond from work, so it takes a while to catch up...

For BC:
Until I see some play from Lewis, I find it rather difficult to judge them overall.  So in judging a quarterback-less BC team, I don't see them in the top 5.  They could make a swift entrance.  The defense will need to shut Maybank down and keep Baer from getting McDaniel's occasional passing game going.  If I see BC was able to do those things, they'll get some props.

Know this much.  Regardless of where I rank Bridgewater, I have nothing but consumate respect for their program.  Their fans are educated about D3, vocal about it...Mike Clark is always willing to talk to the media, and always willing to take the tough questions.  For the most part, BC's rise in D3 should be a model for those who want to get there, minus the occasional player faux-pas.

RE: Who is the ODAC's best player?

I voted Marcus Washington.  I know, I know ... you're thinking "of course he'd vote for an Eagle."

Hear me out...

In three years at Bridgewater, he has put up some of the more impressive all-around statistics, in quiet fassion.

Also keep in mind he has had to share the rushing duties with Jamie Langley (1210 rushing yards), Robbie Matthews (1096), Winston Young (1023), Eric Spence (788), and Linwood Johnson (426) over the past three seasons.

Here are his career numbers (and I think this season will be his "break out" one):

1700 rushing yards (6.3 yards per rush)
16 rushing touchdowns
296 receiving yards (13.5 yards per reception)
4 receiving touchdowns
830 kickoff return yards (27.7 yards per KOR)
3 kickoff return touchdowns
47 passing yards
2 passing touchdowns
