Great Game, Great Tailgate in Lexington today!

The Defense played the Defense of a Champion today. Clark said earlier this year that the defense would have to win a game this year and today it happened. ;)

I also overheard in the Daily News Record that the Catholic loss and RMC loss potentially clinches the 5th ODAC title in a row for BC. Their report said BC holds tiebreakers (head-to-head) over HSC & W&L if BC would happen to lose the final two games. Step one down, now time to keep the streak alive and gain momentum for the playoff run.

Exerpt from the Daily-News Record's Joe Lemire, Oct 26,2005:

Only this time, given some help, the Eagles can make it official. Even though Bridgewater will still have league contests against Randolph-Macon and Catholic on the schedule, ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston confirmed Wednesday that a BC win - combined with losses by Macon and Catholic - would mathematically clinch the Eagles' fifth consecutive conference title.

After my previous post, I thought about it some more and realized that the RMC and Catholic losses leave BC with the NCAA bid.  That's because, even though the season could end with as many as 4 teams tied at 4-2 (BC, HSC, W&L, and Guilford), BC has beaten each of the other 3 teams and therefore cannot lose the head-to-head tie-breaker.

My question:  If there are 2, 3, or 4 teams tied at the end of the regular season, are these teams considered co-champions, even though only one team can get the ODAC's NCAA bid?

Well, based on what I see at the ODAC site, it's clear that the head-to-head tie-breaker not only determines who goes to the NCAAs, but also who is crowned the Conference Champion.  So Bridgewater's 5th straight conference championship is official today.  However, if the ODAC ends with a 3-way tie some year, with the head-to-head tie-breaker inconclusive because team A beats B and team B beats C and team C beats A, then we would have tri-champions, and "longest drought" would determine who goes to the NCAAs.

to all the BC fans.. I was talking to Jake and he is okay. He was just knocked out for a little while but he is okay. except maybe a concussion ;)

That sound good "5 time ODAC Champ...

Now the real question is who will BC play in the first round of the playoffs if they win out!!!!!!!

What is your best guess as to where the D3 voters leave BC in the next vote?

Not much Eagle love the last two weeks, and I am afraid the voters will see the close score, and against a non-traditional playoff team, and drop the eagles another notch or two.

Well,  #11 ONU lost and #17 Salisbury lost which means should 2 teams jump over BC they still stay at #20. My guess is they come in at #19 though. ;)

I agree with Llama. #19 is probable for BC.

BCers
Have no fear. Screw the rankings. Just win when you get to the show and rankings will be moot. Just do not let those pesky RMCers trick you.

Congratulations on a great win to Coach Montgomery and everybody at Emory & Henry from a Mount Union guy!
May there be many more wins in your future (hopefully not too many against the webmaster's alma mater).  :)

I'm puzzled ???
Just caught the late local sports with some footage of BC at W&L. It looked like the players were splashing around on a very wet field in bright sunshine. On tuesday EMU women's soccer moved their home game to Lexington in order to play on a drier field. The athletic staff told me they had much less rain there early in the week.

Did it rain heavily on Thursday or Friday or was this yet another case of a coach trying to slow down the Eagles by hosing the field? Just curious.

Maybe a heavy dew?  I noticed a few players slipping during the first half on the field, and the same thought you had crossed my mind, but it may just have been nature.

Several stats to chew on from the BC - W&L game.

W&L ran 20 more plays and had the ball for 13 minutes more than BC, but gained only 42 more yards.

BC was 2 for 2 in red zone scoring chances.
W&L was 1 for 5.

Only 3 catches for 57 yards for W&L's Jack Martin.

This was the matchup I watched most of the day.  BC played numerous different coverages on Martin from single coverage to 3 men in a zone, to shifting a safety on to him while a corner blitzed.  Several of the INTs were thrown his way.  The one 40-yard catch he made was the best catch of the day...well-defended tight double coverage, and Martin made a heck of a catch.

Jeremybozz, the BC WR's weren't quite as open as the radio guys must have made it seem, but they clearly were open on several plays when Lewis overthrew them (and once with Highfill).  Washington's pass to Awkard was well defended.

I'm only seeing 1 sack show up in the BC stat line, but today's game was the most pressure BC's Defense has put on a QB all season.  Tweardy took a lot of hits.

W&L impressed me with its commitment to the run in the first half.  I'd love to see that blocked extra point/return on tape.

Anyone who thought that Washington was a heisman candidate before today and stick it in their back pocket and realize they should have spent their votes on Cruz or Lutz a few years back... he's good, but lets be honest, he was not a difference maker in the game

new_era
I don't think anyone here is delusional enough to think Washington is a legit Heisman candidate.  Most of the guys on this ballot aren't legit candidates:

http://www.voteforheisman.com/vote3.php

We just like supporting Marcus Washington and Brett Elliot because they're our guys.  DIII.  It's not because they're Heisman worthy.  The vote won't impact the actual Heisman.   But it already has brought some extra media attention to Division III football in those areas.  I'll keep casting my votes as long as we get that result!

By-the-way: Elliot is currently in 7th, 1200 votes behind Reggie Bush (6th), and Marcus Washington is 15th, 440 votes behind Matt Leinart (9th).

I don't think that I have yet thawed out from this afternoon's game.  And holding one's breath for 3 hours is not so good for one's health either.  But as Coach says "Great teams find ways to win."  And those of us who have follwed BC football for years (and I do mean years!) have seen many a different way to victory!  Today it was definitely the special teams that stepped up.  A blocked extra point, a blocked field goal and a blocked punt, why I almost thought I was in Blacksburg.  It was certainly cold enough!  I also want to mention the great job that David and Coley did kicking and punting respectively.  I wonder, though, how many of you were aware that our young men had more than the game of football on their plate this week.  This was a very difficult week for the team.  Wednesday they had a very special visitor who came to celebrate his 11th birthday with them.  He loved being with them.  He had served as an honorary captain walking out for the coin toss , so proud to be part of the team.  And make no mistake.  He was part of the team.  It was how he wanted to spend his birthday, with his football team.  They shared a deep bond of courage:  he had that in abundance, for, you see, he died the next day on his way back to the Duke Medical Center for testing.  Did you notice David Blackwell's helmet during the game?  It had a huge KC on it for Kelly Coffman.  The BC game balls had Kelly's initials on them.  Sometimes when games take on added importance, it becomes more difficult to perform.  And then some part of the team needs to step up.  Today we needed the special teams and our Dbacks to step up and they did.  The game wasn't pretty,  the runs weren't glorious, in fact they were few and far between.  The passes were not connecting the way they usually do.  We were facing an extremely good W&L team (gee I wonder how Peter Dean  :) would have done in his years as QB with the kind of protectin that Tweardy got today, but I digress).  The game meant a great deal to them as well.  It was palpable in the air how much it meant to both teams and fans.  But in the end, BC clawed their way to the end of the game with a 4 point lead.  We did what we had to do to win.  That was what was needed.  Kelly, the win wasn't text-book pretty, however,  it was heart-felt and hard-fought.  But most of all, it was for you.  Be at peace, young man.  You have earned your rest.  The team will carry on and finish the goals of the season and you will ever be in their hearts.
