Guess that tells us something about whether Keith Ricca will be staying at Catholic.

Remember, I was totally wrong to begin with. :)

Oh, no doubt -- but even if you hadn't said it, the possibility wasn't outlandish given the coach's departure.

Merry Christmas to all. Now back up to finish making dinner. (I'm part Italian, my wife is mostly Irish. It's just better if I do it!) :)

May God Bless everyone with a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Looks like Marty Ball will live on at HSyd.  VMI picked Jim Reid, former coach at UR and UMass:

Story mentioned Coach Clark w/drawing from consideration after an informal interview, and George Welsh voicing interest...no other prospects mentioned.

NO, Tusky, You cannot MOON Dr. Geisert!

I just got a postseason Quaker Club Newsletter from Guilford today - some interesting stuff about the renovations to Armfield Athletic Center.  To briefly recap Phase I, a three-story press box (in red Georgian brick and white columns to match the campus architecture) will be built behind the existing one.  The first floor will house restrooms for men and women.  The second floor will be tiered for clock operators, officials, radio announcers and the press.  The third floor will be an observation area for coaches and film crews.  The existing press box will be razed to make room for 161 crimson stadium seats (I assume reserved for Quaker Club Members or guests).  The other existing seating will be refurbished.   The outer fence will be replaced with black pillars, black wrought-iron fencing and "attractive landscaping."   Phase I is scheduled to be complete by the start of next season's first home game, the 100th season Guilford has fielded a football team (started in 1892, I think, but they skipped some seasons due to war years and finances).

Phase II renovations include additional landscaping with an improved entry plaza and gate, signage and lettering, a new scoreboard, lighting, turf and track improvements.  No schedule was published for Phase II.

It also seems Danny McQueen (football) '67 is leading an effort to raise additional funds from all 60's era Guilford athletes.  As an initial pledge, Danny has donated $25,000.   Thanks, Danny '67 from another alumnus named Danny!  Go Quakers!

Improvements to GC's "press box" are much needed. The scaffolding that was used for filming at GC was absolutely scary, and I imagine if there were any wind, there could have been some deaths.
Is Catholic's installation of turf still on schedule, or will it hit a snag with the departure of Coach Clark?

Pat Coleman

Clark wasn't in charge of the fundraising effort, so I doubt it. Could it affect alumni confidence and slow the rate of donations? Possibly. But Bob Talbot is still running that show and he isn't leaving until it's done.

Since the stadium is being pushed up to some posture as a D3 school the only other replacement needs to be that old man who annouces the games. I am sure there is great story about him (whatever)but he was brain dead in 2000. 5 years later he's got to be near catatonic.

The kids do deserve the stadium. The field itself (the turf) was not too bad. The visiting teams deserve it too. SHould help get some OL to keep Vogelbach's attached.

Coleman I have never question your logic but he is old and odd. (you are sometimes a bit presumptious and condending (sp) So we are both right. It piss  me off because he hurt the kids stats and it just sounded so bush leauge. Its like the uncle they should have kept in the attic.

BTW- It sickens me to say this but you were right on this year. You Catholic you..... ;)

Only Skoal and LLama were more on target in regards to the cheerleaders, Damn LLama and his accuracy

Yeah, the term "press box" should be used loosely.  It is, and has been, an embarrassment to everyone involved in Guilford football and lacrosse for some time.  I agree, it looks unsafe to me too.  Anyway, the plans I saw for the new one look great!

Don't get me started on the announcer!  My friends and I sit at football and basketball games and just cringe at some of the things he says.  I wish I could get that job!

I agree - the kids, the coaches, the fans and the opposing team all deserve an upgraded stadium.  Hopefully, it'll also help recruiting.  Honestly, many of the kids Guilford recruits are used to much better HS facilitites, so it can be a tough sell.   Long overdue and I, for one, can't wait ...

Don't know if you guys picked up on it, but I mentioned Phase II "lighting" in my first post about the GC stadium renovations.   In the 1960's and 1970's, Guilford used to play a lot of night games (at Western Guilford HS or Greensboro Grimsley HS) and it was definitely a more charged environment.  In those days, we played Furman, Elon, C.W. Post, Davidson, Catawba, Carson-Newman and the like.  Personally, I look forward to the opportunity to host night games on campus!

From mdvarsity.com-

John Ricca, who started the St. John's at Prospect Hall program four years ago, resigned Tuesday from the Frederick private school and started his new job as assistant coach at Catholic University on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for Ricca, he has no idea who he will work for at Catholic.
Tom Clark, Catholic University's head coach, resigned Monday to become the defensive coordinator at I-AA Liberty University. Ricca was drawn to Catholic by the possibility of coaching with Clark, a longtime personal friend.

Ricca said he is not interested in the Catholic head coaching position, and expects to remain on staff when a new coach is hired, likely within the next two months.

"It's tough to walk away, but this was something I needed to do," Ricca said of the coaching change. His youngest son is the starting quarterback at Catholic, and the elder Ricca said the move makes financial sense for the family.
