In 1950 I walked up to the box office on game day and for four dollars purchased a ticket to the NFL Championship Game (the Superbowl of its day). Incidentally the game was great, with the Browns winning 30-28 on a Lou Groza field goal with 28 seconds left to play, and as a kicker there were 12 future Pro Football Hall of Famers on the field that day.
That's a great story.  By the way, you didn't mention who the Browns defeated in 1950, but I believe it was the LA Rams.  Also, I just did a little research and the average hourly wage in the USA in 1950 was $1.44 (it was only $1.10 in my home state of North Carolina), so this was probably over 10% of the average person's take home pay!  It's not even close, however, to the inflation seen in the $600 cover price charged in 2006!  I don't clear $6000 a week and I bet most of our readers don't either!  lol

Isn't 600 dollars to see the Rolling Stones a little steep? :o. I got more good football for my $12.50 in Salem

There weren't as many options in 1950 as there are today. TV
was in its infancy whereas now you can sit in your living room or a local sports bar and enjoy the game for free, and probably have a better view than those at the game.

hasanova: You are right. It was the L. A. Rams - who were the Cleveland Rams before leaving town for L. A. after the end of the 1945 season, which happened to be a championship one for the Rams. The Browns over the Rams in 1950, the Browns first season in the NFL - sweet vengeance for the Cleveland fans.

There was no televising of the 1950 championship game. If there had been, the Cleveland area (the site of the game) probably would have been blacked out since the attendance was fewer than 30,000, and Cleveland Municipal Stadium held about 75,000 - the date of the game was 12/24, and, as I recall, the playing field was free of snow (although snow was banked along the sidelines), and  the weather was clear but cold and in the 30s, with a normal Cleveland winter wind blowing off Lake Erie.

I understand Cleveland's passion for their Browns.  The younger fans now feel the same way whenever they play the Baltimore Ravens!  I had the pleasure (?) of attending an Indians April night game at Municipal Stadium (aka the "Mistake by the Lake") and nearly froze.  I can only imagine how a Christmas Eve football game must have been.  I'll have to give the city of Cleveland credit, however, they've made a lot of civic progress (Jacobs Field, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Flats district, the raceway near Lake Erie, a new stadium for the Browns) since the days the Cuyahoga River caught fire.  I think that was the environmental signal that something had to change!  As Richard Pryor said in one of his old comedy routines, "Fire is inspirational!"

Remarkably enough, I attended a Browns vs. Bears game there in around 1971 when Dr. Jim Ryan was the Browns QB and Leroy Kelly was the RB.  We were visiting friends of my dad who were Bears fans.  It was the coldest afternoon I had ever been through, ever!!  The wind comes in off the lake and there is no mercy for the under-attired!!

Well, the Rolling Stones have been around a lot longer than DIII football.  :)

You're so right!  The only other athletic event I attended that made me feel that cold was a Giants baseball July night game in Candlestick Park.  Gosh, what a miserable night!  I think Mark Twain's supposed quote said it best, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer I spent in San Francisco!"  To me, old Cleveland Municipal Stadium and Soldier Field in Chicago are almost interchangeable with Candlestick!  lol

Hey olinemom, I sent you a reply in men's ODAC hoops.  Cheers.
I got it!  I just didn't know where you would read it so I sent it to both.  I really liked Andy.  He was so nice!!  They are a good team!!  They played well that evening.  We sure didn't.  Ben Strong's dad said that we had played much better when we played down in G'boro.  Oh well, I'm baking because it's the last home game and it's Senior day.  Are you getting any snow.  They are calling for 8-14 inches here.  I really don't think that we'll get 14". We'll see.  Have a good weekend.  Hope you don't have too many phone directories to deliver today ;D
Brownies for Film Day--Now there's a Slogan I can live with!!!:)  Go EAGLES!

I thought he looked old and the show was lacluster at best.  Too bad, perhaps because I never cared for that band.  I couldn't find anything positive about their message, which, I realize, was the point, but there were so many other bands that I liked better!!
And did anybody hear all the 80's music at the Olympics last night?  What were they thinking?

Just started to snow some in Greensboro - we've had rain all day, but it's getting colder.  Quakers stunk in the last five minutes versus RC today and lost.  I'm done with the phone books - that only lasted three weeks - thank goodness!  lol  Ben had 14 points today, but the team "underachieved."  Maybe we'll get it going in the tournament.  You have a good weekend, too.

You know it's cold outside when two Bridgewater students go out in a kayak, and because of the cold they decide to build a fire in the boat.  Well naturally it sinks, which just proves you can't have your kayak and heat in it too. :D

Go Generals!!!

What about the drug problem on the W&L campus?

WLU78

Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted.

Wow Wright, who wee-weeed in your cornflakes this morning?

I have no idea what you are talking about.  But those are serious charges you are leveling.  I am certain you have first hand knowledge since I can't find anything in any of the papers or news outlets in the area, and I would hope that you wouldn't be making these kind of accusations without some kind of  facts to base them upon.

If your charges are true I am confident the law enforcement people in Rockbridge county and school officials will deal swiftly and severely with the students you name.  If they are not true, I am sure the entire W&L community will await your profuse apologies.
