1974.
Wasn't that also the year they brought in the hash marks so there was more room between the marks and the sidelines?

bwana,

the family and I went over X-mas. Soarin was awesome, But Everest wasn't open yet.  How does Everest compare to the  Rockin' Roller Coaster.

P.S. next time fly, and stay on property, you won't regret it.

I put Everest somewhere between RRC and the Big Thunder Mountain coaster...Everest goes in and out of the mountain, so you don't have the pure indoor feel to it...but it is also much faster than BTM, and there are portions where you are going backwards.

10-4 on the flying, but with the need to carry a stroller, diapers, and such, plus an attemp to eat at Paula Deen's restuarant in Savannah (Yes, I watch the Food Network), made us decide to drive.

Besides, if we flew we would lose those precious chances to stop at South of the Border and purchase all sorts of explosive devices!!  ;)

Bwana: The NFL progressively through rule changes has moved the hashmarks closer to the center of the field at the very least in 1933, 1945 and 1972. I believe that the hashmarks were move in 1972 to their current distance from the sidelines - namely, 23 yards, 1 foot and 9 inches.

I'm starting to get a glimpse at some of the 2006 ODAC football schedules and it rekindled a question I've always wanted to ask.  In a seven-team league with only six football games per team, why do we always have some teams with unbalanced home and away schedules?  Guilford, for example, had 4 home ODAC games last year and two on the road - this year I'm sure it will be just the opposite.  What's so tough about scheduling so each team has three home and three away?

Today's Roanoke Times had the following story regarding the quarterback situation at Bridgewater.

Hello my friend on the left

Well from my experience with scheds is it is a money thing. One school has to agree to bite the bullet and take 2 road games two years in the row to get the act in balance. As an example I think the dreaded Panthers came to GC 2 years in a row and then they were back on a home one year and road the next. GC was playing Charleston Southern and Carson Newman as money games in 2000,2001 and 2002 and that forced Iron Mike to switch a couple of games in conference to get the money games.

In essence GC would have to pay to get the Bow Ties (or anybody) to come to town 2 years in a row or vice versa

How's that field

Hey abnrgr, good to hear from you.  You're probably right.  It doesn't look like "money games" would be such a big deal in DIII, but I guess they can be.  It does seem to me, however, that the ODAC would want all the teams to play three league games at home and three away to keep it as fair as possible.    For sure, you have to have the players on the field to get it done, but all other things being equal, I think a team with a 4/2 home schedule has a little advantage in the ODAC race.  Anyway, unless I'm mistaken, the Quakers will have four home games in 2006 (two ODAC) and six on the road.  At least that's better than the 3/7 home and away schedule two years ago!  lol  Hope you get a chance to watch the Quakers next fall - it should be interesting.  Later.

I haven't been by there in a couple of weeks, but the press box & brick wall had been razed.  They had also put in some drainage and underground access piping as well as dug some footings, so you can see the footprint of the new press box.  They've got the parking lot closed between the back of Dana and Armfield to accommodate the construction crews.  I'll ride by there this weekend and give you another report.  If you haven't done it already, you should look at the drawings in the football section of the website.  It looks like it will be a very nice addition.

abnrgr

Yep I saw the drawings. I was wondering where construction was at. You answered that.

The field itself was not too bad but I like to see something like what the Phoenix has across town. That would be cool.

Yep, I agree - Elon does have a nice stadium and field.  They had to do something when they moved to the Southern Conference after all those years of playing at Williams HS.  I think GC's doing this in two phases - I would expect turf-related issues to be in Phase II.  It also makes it a little tough to schedule because the lacrosse teams also use the field during the spring.

Its a great thing that we are getting turf up here at Catholic, because there hasn't even been grass on the field for the last 2 years. However, Guilford had the nicing playing surface in the ODAC in my opinion. Whoever worked on that field kept it looking beautiful and perfect for running and cutting on. Guilford shouldn't plan to do anything to their playing surface, but keep working on the seating area.

Yeah, I've always thought their turf was pretty good as well, but I know some changes are planned.  From what I see in their plans, most of the work will be on the press box, scoreboard, seating and exterior beautification.
