Message for Kid......
When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the truck, the car, fishing, always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a few minutes. When I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. "When you finish cutting the grass," I said, "you might as well sweep the sidewalk." The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.

Marriage is a relationship in which one person is always right, and the other is a husband.

Haha, that's great!  ;D

H-SC's Bobby Owens was named West Offensive MVP in the VHSCA all-star game played last night.  His team lost 7-0 to the East, but he finished 5-of-9 passing for 70 yards.  He also had 28 yards on the ground.

Llamaguy,
Thanks for the nice words over on the ASC board.  My son is starting his second year of high school coaching this year.  He was a freshman coach last year but was offered and accepted a high school varsity LB job this year.  Jumping up to big time in a hurry :)   By the way it is also nice to see him on the front page of D3Football.com.  He is #39 on the UMHB picture.

I also thought some of you other Bridgewater fans I met  might like to see one of my pictures from my recent Costa Rica vacation.  Llamaguy said I should have brought it home for one of your Stone Station tailgate parties !!!

And to Kid, remember the two most important words in a marriage.  "Yes, Dear".  You don't have to always mean it, but you better by God say it  ;)

Anything that you ardently desire, vividly imagine, totally believe and enthusiastically pursue will inevitably come to pass !!!

Llamaguy

Good to hear he is working his way up the profession. Roocru.
We could definitely fry that sucker up and make it disappear real fast on a Football Saturday. ;D

Kid,
  Remember 2 Things:

1. Marriage is not a word. Its a sentence -- a life sentence!
2. Don't ever marry for money, because you can definitely borrow it cheaper!! ;)

1. Congrats Kid and Mrs. Kid.

2. Congrats to Barnette, Martin, and Sitterson. Funny to see 1 from GC, 2 from W&L, and 0 from Bridgewater.  ;)

3. The GC renevations are really coming along. Trees are going up, the press box is near complete, and the posts are in the ground for the new scoreboard. I'll get out there and get some pics for you ODAC lovers once the scoreboard is up.

4. Spoke with Kiesel. Looks to have about 80 out on the field when camp starts up. Some of the key performers may be taking on new roles to better suit the team.

... it's been a while but I think that's about it for now.  ;D

Sounds good ... I also noticed the ODAC schools represented on the preseason AA team.  Congratulations to all, but I bet BC will have someone on the team after the season!  I'm thinking about going to Lexington for the GC/W&L game this year.  I've been there twice - both Quaker victories, by the way.  It's a nice weekend trip and I bet both teams will be up for each other, especially after the way the Quakers pulled it out at the end in '05!

FYI - Guilford has posted a 2006 preseason roster.  I count only 28 returning players, but another 48 incoming freshmen and transfers.  The passing game and kicking game look the same, but I see some names missing from last year at RB and on Defense.  And, of course, three guys on the OL graduated this spring.

Thanks for letting us know, hasa.  Interesting that there will be "only" 76 players.  Before seeing this, I thought the Quakers would give Bridgewater the best game.  I'm not quite sure now.  28 returners?  I thought GC only lost seven guys to graduation, and I'm pretty sure they had more than 35 guys at season's end.  I looked in the GC-BC program from 2005, and GC had 61 guys.  That means about 25 guys left the team for various reasons (other than graduation).  That isn't good, doesn't matter if you have your top QB and WRs back.  The defense and running game will need to start from scratch, and the OL has to be rebuilt (only two return).  If you don't have a balanced offense (run/pass), an offensive line that gives Vogelbach time, and a defense that can stop the opponent ... you won't win more than five, six games.

That is really odd considering the season GC had last year.. heck Coach Colbert already had around 20 players on his St. Vince. team and they're starting from scratch! What happened?  Was there a player fall out with coaches or because of grades?  ??? ???

Congrats to the various preseason AA.. it's nice.. doesn't mean much unless you FINISH an AA.. keep the ODAC represented well this year!

Congrats to "Kid"... 2003 seems so far away when you consider how our class has changed in 3 years!  ;)

Don't get me wrong, all teams suffer non-graduation losses during the offseason.  Bridgewater, for instance, lost maybe 10 or so (but that's out of 85 returners).  Guilford lost almost half of their returners.  Some of the major ones;

Demetrius Snead (JR starting RB)
Devon White (JR starting CB)
Scottie Byrd (SO starting DE)
Kelby Brooks (SO starting DE)
Brandon Smith (SO starting NG)
Josh Crowell (JR starting CB)
Kyle Kiser (JR starting SS)
Desmond Ledford (FR starting FB)
Steve Dziedzic (FR 2nd string OL)
David Bonilla (FR 2nd string CB)
Adam Hill (SO 2nd string RB)
Lucas Bruff (SO 2nd string WR)

That's eight starters you lost to something other than graduation.  Wow.

I agree.  That's more names than I expected to see gone from last year.  I can't account for everyone because I don't know most of these guys on a personal basis.  Demetrius Snead was one of the players we talked about earlier - not sure why he left, but he came from Arizona Western JC when coach Snead arrived and they're both gone now.  Devon White was another player who came from AZ Western - I know he's not coming back because he was playing professional arena ball in NY this spring.  Desmond Ledford went to HS with my nephew - word is he got homesick and plans to transfer to Western Carolina and try out as a walk-on.   Steve Dziedzic dropped off the team soon after the BC game last year - someone still on the team told me he "didn't like the time commitments required to play college football."  Interesting to note that David Bonilla's brother Steven is listed on the preseason roster, so I'm not sure what's up with David.  The other guys - I simply don't know.

I still think the Quakers will be OK, but I agree that around 18 guys are not there that could have (theorectically) come back (53 at the end of the season minus 7 graduations = 46.  They now list 28 returnees, so that means 18 players went somewhere).  Sometimes it's grades (and GC has rigorous academic requirements), sometimes it's the high cost of going to Guilford versus a state-supported school (relatively inexpensive in NC), sometimes it's family issues, sometimes it's a girl back home, sometimes it's an injury, sometimes it's perceived playing time, sometimes it's how well you like the coaching staff ... give me 18 players who leave and I'll show you 18 slightly different situations.  I still think the Quakers will win 6 to 8 games, but I am a bit disappointed to see the attrition.  All I can do today is study the list and relay what the college has posted online.   I'll see Coach Kiesel at a cookout/open house tonight.  If he comments on any of this, I'll pass it on.

edit...I thought the picture of roocru's fish would reprint here, oh well.

Where would it have looked better, on roocru's wall or on Llamaguy's grill?  You can guess what my guess would be.

Is it September yet?

Demetrius Snead (JR starting RB) - previoulsy talked about
Devon White (JR starting CB) - Hasa post
Scottie Byrd (SO starting DE) - wanted to transfer to a bigger school but grades weren't good enough and I believe ended up somewhere else
Kelby Brooks (SO starting DE) - I think grades (didn't apply himself in classroom)
Brandon Smith (SO starting NG) - between balancing 3 jobs and 2 kids, he was barely around last year and it was kinda known that wasn't going to work out.
Josh Crowell (JR starting CB) - transfered out
Kyle Kiser (JR starting SS) - graduated was a Jr only on the field
Desmond Ledford (FR starting FB) - transefered out
Steve Dziedzic (FR 2nd string OL) - was gone half way through the season last year.
David Bonilla (FR 2nd string CB) - not sure either... I know his brother but haven't talked to him. I think he transfered back home.
Adam Hill (SO 2nd string RB) - haven't heard much from him since FB season.
Lucas Bruff (SO 2nd string WR) - transferred out (and was more of a #6 WR)

hope that helps to shed light. With that, I'm pretty sure the numbers in the upcoming seasons won't drop as much as they did this past season.

also... I believe there are 3-5 others not on the roster that they believe may still be coming in or transfering.

I got to lean with grades as the nexus for such losses. I had some issues with GC-Q back when Brian played. they hired a coach to watch out for players grades and keep up with them. Well he failed from 2000-2004. That was/is unexcusable

He sounded like a pity hire anyway. No offense here but GC-Q has had a lack of scrotal power when somebody snivelled loud enough........lets hire them. Jeez louise.

When classes are brutal they just fail.

Brian's GPA in HS was well over 3.0 (3.4 or 3.5  maybe) and he still had to go to an academic board to be accepted. He graduated on time but with a 2.0. It is more than "rigorous", its a little anal.  :'(

Cost would be number 2 for sure at a....what is it now? 28K a year. Yikes

I will still respect you in the am. ;)

abnrgr - Well, no one will ever accuse Guilford of being a "football factory" or a "diploma mill."  lol  In the 36 years I've been following the school, I've seen "more than one" taken off the field - in all sports - for grades.  Personally, I want the school to be academically tough, but that's just my opinion.  I do think many athletes need - and deserve - some extra consideration because of the substantial time requirements and travel.  Most of these guys are not going to earn a living playing sports, however, so I say let's get them ready for what they are going to do.  I was a very good student, but I really struggled at times during the season and when I was trying to hold down a job or two.  Yeah, with fees and other costs, it's going to push $30k this year.   "Ouch" is right!  Not sure about the coach who was there to supervise academics in 2000-04, so I'll take your word for it - you were certainly a lot closer to the program than I was.  I agree with you on the "intestinal fortitude" issue - often it seems Guilford bends over backwards to be a "home for lost boys."  lol  There is a time and a place for that - especially in a Quaker school - but sometimes you've just got to stand up and say "Sorry, we don't need you" or, to quote Eddie Murphy in Trading Places, "Get out!"  We always respect each other, man - I just report what I see and hear - just as you do.  :)  Peace
