Sniff, Sniff?  What's that smell?  The smell of charcoal heating up.  Fresh cut grass. The sound of "tops" "popping." The gathering of fans on a grassy knoll under a large tree for a day of fellowship.  Canopy's being set up.  Ice being placed in coolers.  The sight of Crimson and Gold everywhere......

Tis' the season......

Hug? Llama? Kid? Religion Major? Rugbyguy? Gal?  Time to get to work....

After reading the comments and questions about Ferrum changing the start time for the BC -Ferrum game I can only hope for your sake it is Ferrum's homecoming. A few years ago ( I think that it was 1997) they played E & H for homecoming and I saw something that only reaffirmed my opinion of Ferrum and at the same time it was quiet funny. When they crowned their homecoming queen they crowned the wrong girl. The girl was so happy to be homecoming queen and she stood out on the field  crying with joy as  her escort held her arm. Then in the blink of an eye the announcer made the following announcement " Could I have your attention please, We have made a mistake and Miss  so and so is not the homecoming queen. The homecoming queen is Miss ( someone else).  Then to add insult to injury they made the first girl go over and crown the second girl queen.

I'm slightly amazed at some of the programs that say they have 120-140 report for August camp.  How do you keep that many guys happy?  In the old days with JV programs, they would at least get some game experience, but what happens now?  At relatively small schools, such as those in the ODAC, that could easily be 20% of the male student body.   Do all these guys get a uniform or is there a cut to a more manageable number?  I know there is some attrition for a variety of reasons, but I just don't see why any DIII program would need over a 100 and many can be consistent winners with 80 or less.  I recognize that programs wanting to be a serious national championship contenders must have some talented depth, but what's the balance between guys being content with their level of playing time and being sure you have enough depth to overcome injuries and fatique in a championship drive?

BC has a JV program.. they keep the young guys happy with JV games and rotating kids onto the "dress list"  for Saturday games.

Wright - I wasn't aware of the JV program at BC, but that helps explain how they can keep so many guys motivated.  Are there other JV programs in the ODAC?

I'm not aware of any other ODAC schools with JV teams but some USAC teams have teams.. Shen. U.  has had a team in the past.   BC plays the various college prep schools to fill out the JV schedule.

Thanks, kirasdad.  I'm learning some new things today about a few of the ODAC (and USASAC) football programs.

Also, E&H fans, is Chase Brown still with the Wasps?  His East Wilkes (NC) HS wrestling team was in the same conference as my son's team and since they are the same age and weight, they wrestled against each other many times.

Thanks.  Chase played for the Wasps in 2004 and was listed on the 2005 roster early in the year, but I didn't see him against Guilford in Greensboro last November.  I was just curious if he was still around E&H.

Why I think that's a swell idea!!  Don't you think we all need some practice after a hot parched summer?  I know I do.  Where might you put the tent?  In the usual place?  You know--a few pictures of our ideal home situation might be helpful for those who hear about it but don't get to come and participate except at away games and at the Stagg Bowl.I'm sure I can make up a brownie or two for the occasion.  Let me know where.  I know I'm making brownies for the picnic after the practice as well. I've been out of brownie mode and out of the apt and over at my Moms (that translates to NO COMPUTER!!) since I fell and broke my left shoulder and left arm in June.  So I really need to get in some practice soon.
Brownies for Film Day--Now there's a Slogan I can live with!!!:)  Go EAGLES!

Yeah, as wrighthall220 said, we field a JV team.  Since 2002, they've played anywhere from four to six games during a season.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the kids playing JV aren't "happy" ... but the ones that are patient and "wait their turn" are rewarded.

A good example of this is Venancio Biela, a senior linebacker for us.  He has played in only six games, recording seven tackles, his first three years for us ... but he looks to be in the LB rotation this season.  He is a great kid who has worked hard and earned his spot this season.  There were a good number of kids that probably came in with him in 2003 and quit because they didn't want to wait (and I suppose quitting is better than waiting).

Shoot, Biela already has three rings he'll be able to show off to his kids, saying he was an important part of those years in preparing the team day-in and day-out.

As a coach, I'm sure there are two main headaches with a large roster; 1) having a huge roster scares off current players and recruits who are looking at coming there and 2) the fact that you have to provide grays, a jersey and football equipment (helmet, pads, etc.) for all of them.  But I'm pretty certain the benefits totally outweigh the negatives, seeing that there are enough players (BC had 144 report yesterday) to have 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s.  That comes in handy when the 1s and 2s on defense can be practicing on one field w/ the 3s and 4s on offense, and visa versa.
