Nice work, Trenches.  There are a lot of factors to consider (injuries, receiving corps, schedules, etc.), but I think most college QBs have lower stats their first  two years than they do in their last two seasons of eligibility.  The added experience is crucial to their success and decision-making.  Really scary when you think about it like that.

Yeah, I fully agree. Having Barnette, Rushing, Joyner, and co. at WR. Barnette alone makes some amazing receptions that would otherwise be incompletions. Having had the chance to really see him grow the last two years has been amazing. You'll laugh when I say this but... he has one of the best set of hands I have EVER seen. The kid is capable of catching anything thrown his way.
Like you said, "most college QBs have lower stats their first  two years," but having those WR's has certainly been the difference. Inside word on Joyner: was originally planning on graduating this may with a semester of eligibility left... but is considering staying the extra semester to finish out his college career. It would help GC and Vogelbach out tremendously to have him stay the extra season. Although you would think some top (D3) recruits coming out of HS would love to have a chance to hook up with a QB like Vogelbach over the next few seasons.
Like I said, it's a long long way off and by no means do i expect the numbers to stay at that level through 4 years... but amazing to see the caliber of play he has played at since joining the Guilford squad.

Also interesting to note... as we all know it took some time for the GC squad to gel last season. Vogs first 3 games looked like:
@ ferrum - 22-42, 1 td, 3 ints, 3 fumbles 258 yds
Methodist - 21-42, 3 tds, 1 int, 265 yds
Averrett - 21-40, 2 tds, 1 int, 214 yds
HSC was the game where GC really took a big step. As did Vogelbach.  He went 14-25, 5 td's, 2 ints, 265 yds.

Since the HSC game he hasn't thrown below 334 yds(5 tds in that game).  Should be a great test this weekend to see how far the GC squad has come.
Guilford does have a great group of receivers.  Chris Barnette, as I'm sure you know, is the younger brother of former NCSU starting QB Jamie Barnette.  Good genes and I'm sure they've tossed it around a bit.  lol  Rushing was in the same backfield at Albemarle HS with former Wolfpack RB T. A. McClendon.  Albemarle is a good, well-coached program.  I'm glad to hear Joyner is considering another semester next fall - that's great news.  Also watch out for Vaughn and TE Ryan Webber.  I think both will pick it up when it's their turn to be a bigger part of the offensive mix.  I also agree that it should be easier to recruit some good receivers the next few years.  If you want to be part of a passing game, Guilford with Vogelbach at QB is the place to be.  I said earlier that last year's Hampden-Sydney game was the epiphany for the Quaker coaching staff.  I don't know if you remember, but Vogelbach didn't start against the Tigers after the Quakers went 0-3 versus FC, MC and AU.  Speaking of Averett, I was at that game until halftime last year and then had to leave for another commitment.  The Quakers were up 14-7 and gave up a late score for a 14 all tie at the half.  Averett has a good team, but that was a winnable game.  GC eventually lost 28-21.

Yeah, and there is another much younger barnette to look for in the future. I always see Chris tossing around with him after the games. Agreed with Vaughn and Webber... as well as the new WR's this year (recruits and transfers). Should be fun to watch them grow as well.
Yeah, Danny Langston started the game. At the time, Vogelbach had a great number of turn overs and a dispute with the staff gave danny the nod. It was a questionable call and only a matter of time before josh was in the game.
Agreed with the Averett game. Much like the Ferrum and Methodist games of last year, I think if GC played them again in the latter half of the seasons, GC could have taken bothe games (if not atleast make them closer).

How much younger?   lol  Hopefully, he'll want to be a Quaker, too.  They're from Person County HS.  Good 4A conference (Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill, plus five Durham area schools - Northern, Southern, Hillside, Jordan and Riverside).  Good move putting Langston on Defense this year.  Is he the back-up QB or is someone else on the depth chart this season?   There was a lot of discussion last fall with USASAC team fans about catching Guilford early in the season in 2005.  I still say it took a while for new players and coaches to gel.  I agree with you.  I also think we would have won a couple of those in rematches later in the season.  Too bad we don't have an NFL-type home and away schedule.  lol

Hahaha... glad to see the support for GC. I know eveyone here backs the rest of the ODAC but it's good to see some "depth" to the conference.

PS..

is my favorite person of the 3

   - haha... yeah one can only hope. Not sure. Guess would be around 8 or so. He looks like a mini-chris. it's uncanny.
   - Yeah it was a great move to put danny at safety. The depth at WR allowed this move and will pay off big all year.
   - QB... a freshman (expected backup) had PCL surgery over the summer. The rehab took longer then expected and they decided to red shirt him. Backs are fine. Micah Rushing and Chris Barnette both played QB in HS and Pete Bobak (who I think is also a TE) has run back up. Plus Langston. There's depth there if needed.
    - haha, yeah atleast a measure of revenge was had the last 2 weeks.  :)

ALSO...
CONGRATS TO MARIO PAYLOR!! ODAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK!!!

Funny note... barnette's last 4 games... 17, 14, 11, 14 recs respectively.

Llama,

I didn't notice the field had a bigger crown than before.  I sit up high and it wasn't noticable from where I was.  But please, don't think I am down on #13, I am a big fan of his, that is why I have expected even more out of him so far.  I still think he will lead us deep into the post-season, but as I say below, that is really looking too far ahead.

Pak,
Didn't think you were down on him at all. I can assure you he would be the first to tell you he expects better. Knowing that the team had not stepped foot on the field other than 8 plays at the pigskin preview, I just thought there might be some difference. I'll admit I didn't see the crowning before, but it is definitely visible if you venture over to the visitor's side of the field. ;) As for #13, we know what he is capable of and once he hits his stride passing, I would hate to be the team he is playing on that day. :o

This might be a wild guess... but I'm going with Lagrange as the breakout game for #13!

I'm gonna guess a little sooner, like Saturday! He knows in order to walk away with a victory this week he will have to personally beat the 8 to 9 in-the-box defense that Ferrum will try. ;)

I'm with you Llama. If GC gave up zero sacks on over 40 attempts, then I feel sure Highfill will pick them apart.

I didn't mean to say that Guilford should be in the Top 25, I just thought they had earned more than one point.  I really think we are jumping the gun to talk about playoffs before the ODAC season even starts.  Let's let this thing play out, then we will complain if an ODAC team gets slighted.

Well, getting votes at any time is often difficult.  With teams having played only one or two games, it is conceivable that someone is still voting for a solid 0-1 team with a track record of success (UMHB) and not a 2-0 team like Guilford with wins over teams without much national credibility (Ferrum/Methodist).

One vote means one person on one ballot has them ranked 25th.  If they keep winning, the votes will increase.  If they lose, don't expect another vote for a while.

The Guilford game this week against Averett will be very tuff. Considering that Averett has played two nationally ranked teams in the past two weeks. They are going to be hard to read on how good they really are because they have played these two teams. I have confidence in the staff at Guilford that they will be able to find a good sceem that will put them in the best position to win though.

So far this season, one thing that has impressed me is the general lack of turnovers.   There have been three interceptions, but, as a team, the Quakers have passed 107 times in two games.  In past seasons, we couldn't seem to hold the ball!  Hopefully, people with good hands are now part of the scheme.  lol  I think a lack of turnovers is key to beating good teams, especially on the road.

Yeah and it helps that there are more upper classman than in years past on the team. and the younger guys that play have alot of playing experience as well. This will always help a team out with playing on the road and with turnovers.

The ODAC is now...

7-5 overall
4-0 vs the USAC
2-0 vs the NCAC
1-3 vs the CC
0-1 vs the OAC
0-1 vs the SCAC

This week we have the following games...

Catholic vs McDaniel (CC)
Bridgewater at Ferrum (USAC)
Emory & Henry vs N.C. Wesleyan (USAC)
Washington & Lee vs Sewanee (SCAC)
Randolph-Macon at Frostburg State (ACFC)
Guilford at Averett (USAC)

Question - Does Bridgewater's 41-0 win over McDaniel look any better with the ODAC going 0-3 against the Centennial this past week?  Or does the fact that the Green Terror lost to Seton Hill (D2) 17-7 mean that McDaniel will be at the bottom of the CC this year, thus not making BC look any better?

Congrats to the ODAC for being 4-0 against the USAC.
