So yeah, I'm a believer in Ferrum's run game.  WOW :o ... the Panthers got what they wanted - when they wanted it.  They finished with 493 rushing yards, 242 of which Pitts (QB) had.  And yet when it came down to 2nd-and-goal from the half-yard line in overtime, they couldn't stick it in.  Again; WOW :o.

Again ... Ferrum is one heck of a team.  Their weakness is definitely their secondary (I can see why Guilford put up the yards/points they did against them), but we didn't really try to take advantage of it.  We stuck to our guns - the running game and an opportunistic defense - and got it done.

A coach (early in the season) couldn't ask for a better outcome - a win in a game where you were pretty much dominated.  Definitely a learning experience without a loss.

Congrats Eagles!!!  Talk about your emotionally draining game!  Phew...

(Oh, and congrats to E&H, RMC, and W&L for pulling wins out today ... 4-2 day for the ODAC, not shabby - interesting how it was two 2-0 teams that lost)

First off, hats off to Ferrum for a great game.  Those kids played hard, and their quarterback is really a dynamic player.

Also, hats off to our 'D' for sucking it up and stopping Ferrum 3 times inside the one with the game on the line.

What I really have to question is our defensive game plan going in to this game.  We were completely disorganized (2 12-men on the field penalties, nobody covering the pitch the entire game......) on defense.  And this is not a knock on our kids, they played hard.  But how do you propose to cover the pitch on an option with a corner backed 10 yards off the LOS?!  Answer............we didn't.  Instead, we let two wingbacks that wouldn't start on our JV team gain yards at a clip of 10-20 yards a pop, untouched.  Regular readers of this board know that I am not a big fan of our currenl Defensive coordinator, but again I think we need a serious adjustment.  Today we had better players at 10 out of 11 positions (our D vs. their O) but it was obvious we were not ready to defend their offense.  This reflects back on the coaching and it's frustrating because we have a talent level that could take us far into the playoffs this year IF we know how to use it.   It's one thing getting beat by a great player making great plays (as their quarterback did many time today).  But its another thing all together giving up big play after big play because we didn't have the proper assignments.

Not to belittle any efforts, but we were lucky to win today.  Hopefully this will be a character building game, and we did the the 'W' which in the end is all that counts.  Our game planning is going to have to improve.  There are a lot better teams than Ferrum out their standing between us and where we want to go.

Whew...one crazy game yesterday...I too thought BC was going to take one on the chin.  Yeah, with as much talent as we supposedly have on defense, you have to wonder how BC could allow Ferrum to run all over them, especially in the 2nd half...but despite all the yardage, the BC D did only allow 7 points in the 2nd half.  But it was great hearing Coach Bill and Scott Lowe go crazy on that 4th and goal play!!!

The key here is, we got the win and at the end of the day, they dont ask how ugly it was but whether or not you won...

Congrats, especially to the BC Def for a tremendous stand and keep the momentum rolling next week back at home.

A big "whew" when I checked the scoreboard this morning! I didn't get to listen to the  4th or the OT (stupid wedding) but it sounds like I missed a humdinger of a game! Congrats BC on the win, and WOW....what a running game those Ferrum boys have!

The ODAC is now...

11-7 overall
2-0 vs the NCAC
1-0 vs the ACFC
6-1 vs the USAC
1-1 vs the SCAC
1-4 vs the CC
0-1 vs the OAC

This week we have the following games...

Bridgewater vs LaGrange (IND)
Emory & Henry at Newport News (ACFC)
Washington & Lee at Centre (SCAC)

Then, of course, the ODAC play gets underway with...

Guilford at Hampden-Sydney (senior QB vs freshman QB)
Catholic at Randolph-Macon (both 2-1 on the year)

who's who? Vogelbach is a redshirt sophmore.

Eh-You

Is it possible to throw the ball 70 times a game and not have a slew of turnovers? I was very impressed by Guilford's passing offense (Barnette is SICK!) but my goodness, take a knee 30 times and you probably beat Averett. When you score 28 in the first half and 6 in the second, you got outcoached in the locker room. I'm not sure they get to the next level REFUSING to run the ball against good teams, but they're fun to watch.
To all newbies - don't run your mouth until the team you're pulling for wins the big game. (please refer to Eh-You's karma for more details)

Tough loss for Catholic yesterday, as they were the better team all day, but couldn't put up the points to prove it. They outgained McDaniel by almost 140 yards, but couldn't capitalize off of great opportunities. The game was lost in the 3rd quarter when Catholic started 3 drives in McDaniel territory but went 3 and out each time. The last drive started with an apparent touchdown run by Nick Olivero, but it was called back by holding. On top of that, there was a 15 yard penalty for taunting I believe going into the endzone. It seems pretty crappy to me that a celebration penalty would be enforced on a TD that was called back. It was certainly a turning point to have that 25 yard penalty and lose so much field position.
Catholic's defense looks like it has improved a lot going into this season, however the offense is weaker than the previous year. Ricca looked good getting all the snaps. The two touchdown passes he made were great, and it baffles me why they didn't try to go to Bowman more often. John Jacobs tore his ACL the week before, so it looks like the job is all Keith now.
The Cards are still a young team, but have definitely improved upon last year's play.

I realized I mistyped that once I was on I-66 ... an hour from my house.  Little late to turn around, lol. :)

BC up to #8 even with the close game with Ferrum... it will be interesting to see how the coaches poll ranks this team.

Congratulations to Saturday's ODAC winners!  Congratulations also to Averett.  The Cougars have a fine team - wish we had half their running game and a few of their special teams players.  :)  Interesting game to watch and nice to meet Trenches.  As Trenches said earlier, big plays did in the Quakers.  AU had like a ba-zillion yards on kickoff returns, so they always seemed to have good field position (they really had good position on the 90-yarder run back for a TD!)  Throw in the 20-yard fumble recovery for a TD and the four interceptions and it was just too much to overcome.  I heard some call this a "blowout" and, granted, it was a 20 point win for AU, but Guilford had more yardage, fewer penalties, more first downs - it was 28-28 at the half and GC missed a FG to take the lead.   It was a competitive, winnable game for both sides.  Big plays told the story - AU got more than GC.  A break or two one way or the other and there clearly could have been some 14 point swings.  Hats off to AU - they deserved the win, but I think Guilford's Offense was capable of putting 7 TDs on them.  GC Defense was weak - we lack something - I thought we should have given up less.   AU got two TDs  - one each from the Kickoff Team and their Defense - that turned the tide.  If "ifs and buts were candy and nuts" ... lol  They won, we didn't and "to the victors go the spoils," but neither team should get too high or too low after this game.  It was either team's game until the last 7-8 minutes.  AU will win a lot of games this year and GC will bounce back.  Just got to stop those big plays, Quakers!

PS:  This information is all unofficial, but Vogelbach was 42 of 70 for 502 yards, five TDs ands one 2-point conversion.  Four interceptions, however.  He probably forced two of them trying to make something happen in 4th Quarter when the Quakers were trailing.   For those of you who keep up with this sort of thing, he's got 14 passing TDs this season in 3 games and 51 for 13 games at GC.  I also count two TDs rushing and three 2-point conversion passes.  By my count, 4792 yards passing so far.

Any thoughts on LaGrange?  I looked over the stats on bridgewaterfooball.com and the records of their opponents here on D3  and I'm not sure how they stack up as a first year team.

A few telling numbers (thanks to bridgewaterfootball.com)
2.3 Points PG
84.3 Total Yards PG
46.0 Opp. Points PG
435.3 Opp. Total Yards PG

A few questions I have..

Does BC's D pitch another shut out?  Even with the potential for 2nd and 3rd teams playing?
Can BC's D keep LaGrange under 50 yards?

Will BC's O finally have a HUGE game and hit the 600 yard mark again?

Or will LaGrange come out with nothing to lose and make a run at BC?

Any thoughts?

70 pass attempts by Vogelbach?! :o

Like I say regarding the NBA ... if Allen Iverson averages 28 shots a game for his career (when you count the times he is fouled and sent to the line), he better be putting up 28 points a contest.

So if Vogs is attempting 70 passes, he better be putting up mind-boggling numbers.  Shoot, Bridgewater's record for passing attempts in a game is still 42 ... and that was set back in 1996, then tied in 1997.  I wonder what Lutz, Jenkins, Wakefield, Lewis or Highfill could do if they passed 70 times with the receivers we've had over the last six years.  Yikes.

The best one is being 1-for-37 on third down conversions. :o

The shutout is possible, yes.  But the other things I actually hope don't happen.

I want to see a lot of young kids in the 3rd and 4th quarter, which means we'll probably not score a whole lot and we will more than likely give up a few yards.  I know Clark and Co. want to keep the 1s and 2s in game shape for Homecoming (vs. H-SC on Sept. 30), so we might see them no matter what into the 3rd quarter.

I'm egger to see some freshmen OLs, RBs, WRs and DBs that haven't seen the field yet.
