No, and you can let the admissions office off the hook.

But how can a coaching staff not know this kid was too good to have come straight from high school, and if he was a factor at E&H (don't know if this is true) wouldn't he have been scouted?

All speculation on my part there, just to be clear.

One thing that is interesting ... It's not Brad Bankston's decision alone, it went through a review committee?

Even more interesting is Bridgewater's AD is on the executive committee. Talk about a conflict of interest, does he obstain from voting due to the fact that BC could gain a chance at an ODAC Championship as a result? I'm glad I wasn't put in that situation, although I assume it would be a majority vote so it may not have mattered. :)

How do you "flunk out" in October?  Isn't that mid-terms?  Doesn't the kid have a chance to get on track?

Especially with all the focus on high school kids being unprepared for college I am shocked that E&H would allow that to happen.

i disagree...see below

Quote from: Pat Coleman on October 31, 2006, 11:06:51 PMNarch, if a kid applies to Methodist as an incoming freshman, do you automatically investigate him to make sure he's not actually a transfer? I wouldn't guess so.

if the technology to check enrollment history is as readily available as it seems to be (nslc database), and a school that participates in this program chooses not to use this technology, then i think you would have to hold them responsible for not knowing...and this includes mc - if the admissions staff at mc missed this type of thing, i would be disappointed, but i would also say that they should suffer the same fate of any other school that uses an ineligible player

Pat C.

If there is no investigation of incoming Freshman even if they are
transfers, and DIII doesn't send them through the Clearinghouse
doesn't that leave a huge RISK factor open for all schools. Especially
if the word gets out and some of these guys that do flunk out of one
school and go across state lines to apply to another knowing they
won't get checked out. As a former coach I made sure my kids were
eligible and I depended on my adminstration for assisting in verification.

If i'm not mistaken...the player in question left school in October...but was indeed flunking his courses at the time...so he was not in good academic standing at the time.
The Wasps have a pretty decent crowd that is making the trip up this weekend to Lexington...The weather folks are calling for 50 and sunny...perfect...and the beer will be flowing like wine I'm sure...
We're very happy to be in the situation we are in right now...and happy to even have our guys even be argued about for post-season awards...but traditions arent built on awards...they're built on victories...and those victories are built on hard work...and hardnose play...and nobody works harder...and is more hardnose than Coach Monty...he kind of makes me nervous when we talk...like he wants to fight somebody...and I love it... the kids have really bought in to what he's selling...
W&L should also be commended on their resurgence...I can remember them being called cake-eaters by an old coach of ours...not really sure what that meant...but it sounded like it summed them up perfectly at the time...but they have definitely made the commitment to FB the same way they have to other sports like Lax and Soccer...so...good for them...
Good luck to all this weekend....and we'll be in the parking lot by the law school for the E&H fans...and for anyone else who wants to wander by for a BBQ samich!

Llama,

I believe Kendall being on the Executive Committee may hurt us in this instense. He's the kind of guy who would go above and beyond to make sure there was no since of favoritism towards his school.

I'm still thinking this is an NCAA problem, that requires an NCAA decision. One that will probably be handed down in mid-February. The NCAA will make Guilford forfeit the three or so games and it will be an after-thought. (Just speculation in my Crimson and Gold colored world)

I just read the DNR article regarding the ineligible player.  Coach Monty indicated the kid flunked out of E&H last October.  Questions....If a student transfers/enrolls at another school, wouldn't the school request transcripts from any previous schools attended?  Would a "flunk out" be included?  Does an admissions office normally review history and inquire about any gaps in enrollment, the same as an employer would when interviewing a candidate?  How do the admission requirements of E&H compare to Guilford?  Just curious......
As has been presented several other times in this discussion, Guilford did not know he had ever attended E&H or, for that matter, any other post-secondary school.  Reports from all sources indicate he lied and told Guilford he had not attended any other school or participated in any sports-related activities at any college or university.  Guilford, therefore, did not know any transfer information was applicable.  Guilford, like many other schools, regularly matriculates students who wait a year after high school.  Reasons are varied, but can include work, travel, volunteer groups, missions, "finding one's self" and the like.  This is not at all unusual.  I cannot speak knowledgeably about E&H's requirements, but I do know Guilford is in the upper portion of the ODAC in this regard.  The average SAT score is around 1175 and most students are in the upper quartile of their HS class.  Guilford does, however, have a proud tradition of giving students from all socio-economic backgrounds a chance to prove themselves.  Once in, however, the same standards apply to all and students can and do flunk out with regularity.  It is a college in which one truly earns their degree.   I know, I was there.

... still hard to believe Guilford didn't know they played against him last year.
I'm hearing he was in preseason drills only.  Did he ever play in an E&H 2005 game?  Besides, he was academically gone in October last year and the Quakers always meet the Wasps in season-ending Week 11.  Last year's game was November 12 in Greensboro and this year's game will be November 11 in Emory.

Well, E&H has no archives on either ehc.edu or ehcsports.com, but the Wasps 2005 opponents still have the box scores on their sites.

Sept. 3: E&H vs Marietta (box score) - Rich played, didn't record a stat
Sept. 10: E&H vs Ferrum (box score) - Rich played, had one special teams tackle
Sept. 24: E&H vs W&J (box score) - Rich played, had three tackles on defense

He doesn't show up in any box scores after the W&J game, so it looks like he only played in three games, recording four tackles.

So when he shows up on Ferrum's roster next year he should be a Junior?  :D

The Ferrum folks may not like it, but I think that's pretty funny.  :)  I suggest he change his name, however.  How about Chris Warren?  Yeah, that has a nice ring to it.
