A historic day for Hampden-Sydney College. They hired a Baptist...not a Presbyterian.  :D (his words, not mine) Check out this guys resume....unreal!!! Academic All American in football at Air Force, Rhodes Scholar, AF pilot, and the list goes on and on. A great resume does not always translate to a great prez but I am excited to see what this guy can do. GO TIGERS!!

Definitely have to agree with you here. A great choice for the old alma mater. When I learned of this hire I wondered how they got the guy, although I'm certainly pleased that they did. My biggest worry is that H-SC will be a stepping-stone job for someone with this much on the ball and that we will be going through the whole exercise again in a couple of years.
As for the Baptist angle, that was really surprising. I figured the school would go coed before they hired a non-Presbyterian.  :D

You know, I think a lot of schools are going through this sort of discussion.  Guilford hired their first non-Quaker (he's Catholic) President in 2002 and so for he's been a great find.  In my opinion, you find the best person available and the other stuff, while important, is secondary.

That was something I thought about as well. I figured 5 years max. I would be shocked if he does not end up in a prominent position somewhere on the national stage. (or maybe even the world stage) I think it is a chance H-S has to take to get a guy of this caliber. And maybe we shouldn't be planning his career out for him.  :D

I agree that this is a great hire for HSC.

Happy New Year to all the ODAC and D3 fans.  Tomorrow all of our teams will be undefeated again.

Nice work ... and in the 1974 NAIA Poultry Bowl ...

Guilford College 6, William Penn University 6

The tie game was played in the rain and mud, but Guilford was awarded the trophy on total yards gained.  After going only 3-36 from 1970-73, the 1974 Quakers were 6-3-2 and the 1975 team was 8-2.

No problem.  I think the Poultry Bowl was an annual game in those days for good NAIA teams that missed the playoffs.  It's somewhat obscure ... only "less forgetful" fans from GC or WPU would probably ever remember!  lol

Dr Howard doesn't mention Plano Senior High School directly, but Plano Independent School District has honored him.  If the 1991 USAF grad played high school football on the 1986 Plano Senior High School Wildcat team, he was state champion.  Therefore, he knows his football!  (If he graduated from Plano East Senior High or PESH, then he played against Plano Senior High School.)

Don't forget that back in the 1930s and 1940s teams had to play in a minor bowl game before they got invited to one of the bigger games.  For example, E&H played in the Burley Bowl at the Stone Castle in Bristol before they would've gotten invited to the Tangerine Bowl.  Not sure how you can look up the scores on those games, other than to go to the yearbooks of the individual schools, but there are a few more games.

The Burley Bowl was played for 12 years (1945-56) and, in total, 12 schools played.  East Tennessee, for example, played the last five.  I only found two scores:

1948  West Chester (PA) 7, Appalachian State 2
1956  Memphis 32, East Tennessee 12

The 1952 ticket stub pictured in the attached article shows a price of $2.70 with 45 cents of the total as tax ... some things never change!  :)

This may have been true for E&H but it was not for Catholic's bowl appearances.
