Is football the only team that plays on that field?

Pat, obviously not, and I know that the field is now used by many sports for games, practice etc However, there is nothing like a night football game from an atmosphere point of view. It would be nice to play at least ONE night game during the season. I understand that many D III schools do not like to play night games from a travel and cost factor. However, I was fortunate to see Dickinson host their first night game in their history last year against F & M. It was standing room only!!!It was an amazing night. Some D III conferences are leaning toward night games. I beleive W & J has four night games scheduled this season. Others are sticking to the traditional Saturday afternoon matchups.

Both teams have to agree to play at night. Not many ODAC games under the lights so far -- I believe just one conference game in 2009. Next year when Guilford comes to W&L I would suspect that they would be willing to play at night.

It takes two teams to sign a contract, and you can't simply snap your fingers and declare that such and such will be a night game, especially not the first year you have lights.

You're right, Pat.  Hampden-Sydney at Guilford on September 27 is the only ODAC conference game (out of 21 total) being played at night.  There are, however, a number of nonconference match-ups with ODAC teams under the lights ... such as against Greensboro, Shenandoah, Southern Virginia and Averett.

Yes, but I believe Guilford has had lights for more than a few weeks, right? :)

I could be wrong but I believe W & L had lights installed prior to the 2008 season when they completely gutted and renovated their stadium.

Guilford's first home night game in Armfield Athletic Center was September 15, 2007 versus Averett.  The Quakers had hosted "home" night games decades ago, but always at either Greensboro's Grimsley HS or Western Guilford HS.   In the last two seasons, the teams the Quakers have hosted at home at night have been HSC (ODAC), Greensboro, Methodist, Averett and Southern Virginia.  All but SVU are among the geographically closer schools to Guilford and, in SVU's case, GC accommodated the Knights' request to play on a Friday night for religious reasons.

I attended the HSC-Guilford game in 2007.  Great atmosphere and what a shootout.  I think there were 15 touchdowns scored in that game and more than 100 points.  The night game certainly made things more comfortable for the fans and players than a hot September afternoon in NC.  I understand the reluctance if you have a 3 or 4 hour bus ride after a night game to get home.  I think there is a great atmosphere at night at Guilford.

I was there also ... and you have it exactly right.  We couldn't stop the run and you couldn't stop the pass .... anyway, the run prevailed as the Tigers won 56-49.

HSC85,  I hope you'll make the trip again on September 26 when the Quakers and Tigers meet at 7 pm.  I have no idea who'll be Guilford's QB or what offense we'll run, but it'll be homecoming, a new turf field and greatly upgraded visitor stands.   It should be another great atmopshere!

Yes I plan to be there.  Our son will be a Junior this year.  I applaud Guilford for the upgrade of facilities.  Our daughter was recruited by Guilford to play basketball but she ultimately chose Averett.  I think that Guilford has a beautiful campus.  We are looking forward to the trip in September.

Glad to hear it.   With homecoming, allow some extra time for parking/tailgating.  If you get a chance, take a walk around the campus ... something new on a regular basis the last few years.  Good luck to your son in football this year and to your daughter at Averett.  HSC has a beautiful campus as well, but thanks for your compliments about Guilford ... it is a special place.  Let me know how to locate you in September and we'll say hello.

Guilford's 7th announcement for incoming freshmen football players adds 6 and puts the fall 2009 total at 48:

Interesting to note that one recruit is 6'3"/300 and played four years of HS tennis ... what a visual image of him charging the net!

The field turf, by the way, is complete and the final landscaping is almost done.   Check the earlier posted webcam links or go to www.guilford.edu.

Interesting to note that Guilford's Friday, Oct. 2 game with Southern Virginia is now listed as a GC home game ... if true, this will give the Quakers six home games involving three 7 pm starts.  GC played the Knights in Greensboro last year and was slated to go to Buena Vista in the orginal schedule.  Personally, I hope we can get off these Friday night games ... I understand the need to accommodate SVU's religious calendar, but ... it makes it difficult for fans to travel, the crowds are lower and Friday nights should be reserved for HS games.  Just my opinion.  :)

What is their religious calendar? Seventh Day Adventist? Orthodox Jewish? And why did they not know that college football is played on Saturdays when they started the program?
