Quakers have Virginia University of Lynchburg for a scrimmage on Aug. 27.  Never heard of it, so I had to look it up.  Looks like a Seminary that's gone through about six name changes over the years and decided to start football this year.  They have a regular season game against Wesley this season and will probably get crushed.  Lord help them!  :)

Are we sure this isn't a typo of some sort?  VU of L'burg with a football team???

I saw it on several sites referencing schedules for Wesley, Guilford and VU of L, so I think it's true.  In fact, the VU of L site specifically talks about the start of football.  Hey, baptism by fire-breathing wolverines I guess.  Pun absolutely intended.  :)

Wow. :o  The debt they had to incur to start a team is not something I'm sure they can afford.  But it could be nice to have a DIII team here in Lynchburg, for however long it lasts!

Speaking of the heretofore dearth of DIII football in Lynchburg, why do you think Lynchburg College hasn't started a team?  With a couple of exceptions, the Hornets do fairly well in other sports.

Lynchburg had a team 60 or so years ago, as did Roanoke.  I don't know why they stopped competing in that sport.

VU of L'burg with football. OMG. They are going against those Wesley Wolverines for fun? I am sure there will be serious injuries. WHY suffer. I can hear it in the locker room. "we are going to find out what we are made of" while Wolverines are spitting blood waiting to get on the field.

On a more somber thought: if GC-Q does not slaughter them like hogs too bless their Quaker a$$es for 2011 .  :)

My thoughts exactly.  Quakers ought to thump a new program even if is just a scrimmage.  If we don't, 2011 could be a repeat of 2010!

It's been a long time but there's a story about Lynchburg getting the death sentence by their administration in regards to football a long time ago.  They've got a great field ready to go and great setting for it.

Congratulations to Guilford's Johnathan Smith for earning two All-America honors at the DIII Track and Field Championships at Ohio Wesleyan University.  By finishing second in the 200 meters and sixth in the 100 meters, the Georgia freshman became Guilford's first DIII AA in Track and Field.  By the way, as you might expect at a National Championship, the difference between 1st and 6th in the 100 meters was 0.08 seconds.

Well damn it, get Smith into that slot back position and bubble screen his butt. They have to feel the "need for speed"  :)

Funny you should say that, abnrgr - I've been thinking the same thing.  If I was Coach Rusiewicz, I'd be looking up young Mr. Smith and asking, "Son, have you ever considered playing football?"  If you're a speedster indoors at 55-60 meters and outdoors at 100-200 meters, how perfect is that for football?!

The next question is, "And do you like to have your teeth rattled by two 250 lb fire-breathing linebrackers running about 1.8 secs per 100 meters slower than you when they have trapped you between them?"   ;)
