according to the NCAA rules, no artificial noise-makers are allowed at sanctioned games, Hasa, so why did anyone hear any cowbells? or any other kind of noise-makers for that matter?  Just a point of order----

Hey, Olinemom.  Some small bells - about 2" across - have been given away at the games.  Personally, I didn't think any noise made was that obtrusive.  In fact, I didn't even notice it ... guess the refs didn't either.  Unlike narch's comments on the USASAC page, Guilford has a visitor section on the opposite side of the field.

There are cowbells at every D3 game I've ever gone to. Personally I can't stand them, and I know W&L has them, primarily with the parents, but I wish they would go away. That being said, I heard them throughout my career at W&L both home and away ODAC and OOC (96-00) and I heard them the second week of the season, both teams, at Sewanee, and I heard them last weekend at B-SC. I'd be real happy if that rule was actually enforced....

I don't think the NCAA has a rule on cowbells. If there is such a rule it's not enforced  at Miss. St games. I think they must hand them out there. http://www.hailstate.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=16800&ATCLID=926236

As to the Guilford game and cowbells - we sat in front of a few fans that had them. I enjoy games with enthusiastic crowds. I never thought anyone was over the top or obtrusive. I just joking commented that my 7 yr old son did not like them.

That's the way I took your comments as well.  :)  The families of players (especially the moms and younger siblings) come by the Quaker Club tent before the game asking for the bells and we gladly give them away.

When we were at Sewanee the cheerleaders gave my daughter (almost 3) pom-poms. That was kind of cool. And B-SC actually had a marching band that played during the game from the stands and at halftime. Wasn't a great marching band, but it was neat to watch. At one point they marched over to an area with a lot of kids and played just for them. Pretty cool. I do think that is one way D3 can appeal to some more fans that aren't involved in the school or with the players, make it a neat family event on a Saturday.

I know my wife and I are always looking for places to take the kids on weekends for a few hours. D3 games if the crowd is well managed could be a pretty neat family event if you go a little extra mile. I'm sure it would stretch already tight budgets though...

i can't find anything in the general division iii handbook re: artificial noisemakers, but i did find the following on page 10 of the .pdf 2010 ncaa division iii football championship handbook

QuoteThe NCAA representative and the host institution are responsible for controlling
artificial noisemakers. An institution will not be allowed to have artificial noisemakers
(i.e. fire alarms and cannons) sound during any championship game that may be heard
from inside the stadium that is purposefully activated throughout the game.

and from page 24 of the .pdf (appendix H)
Quote15. Proper crowd control must be in place at all times. Security for the visiting team is a
priority. Artificial noisemakers are not allowed.

i'm not sure if there are regular season rules which are different, but these rules seem to prohibit the use of cowbells and vuvuzela's...speaking of which, read this article about vuvu's at desales soccer games...funny stuff, especially this passage:

QuoteJustin Carbonari, a senior communication major who is widely recognized as the campus premier vuvu player, has an appreciation for the finer intricacies of the music. His vuvu performances at soccer games have elevated beyond the simple drone of the masses and have found melody and rhythm, bringing soul to the stands.

"I first heard it a year ago at the Gold Cup and thought they were great, because in a way I've always felt I've heard the sound through my spirit. After spending this summer listening to books on tape and traveling to the Himalayas to study with the vuvu gurus, I feel now that the instrument is more an extension of myself," Carbonari explained.

i have my own feelings about the vuvuzela, which i've expressed on the usasac boards...cowbells are just a small step below the vuvu on my "things i dislike about college football" list...there are only about 2 things on the list to begin with :)

HSCTiger fan - from the article you linked:
QuoteThat spring, the 12 schools of the SEC agreed to a compromise on artificial noisemakers, acknowledging the role cowbells play in the history of Mississippi State University by amending the conference by-law. In the fall of 2010, on a one-year trial with specified restrictions, cowbells were permitted in Davis Wade Stadium for the first time in 36 years. And due to MSU fans' notable adherance to the rules outlined by the league, cowbells will once again be allowed for the 2011 season with similar restrictions in place.

a wikipedia article indicates that the bells can be rung at designated times such as halftime, time outs and after a msu touchdown...this seems to sync up with the "adherance to rules outlined by the league", but the linked article also seems to indicate that this is a sec rule, not a ncaa rule - the internet (or google search) seems to think this is a ncaa rule, but i can't find it in any rulebook for the regular season...perhaps this is a stadium-by-stadium thing?

Thanks for your research, narch.  +1

Is GC really going to play RMC a close game ? I hope you're right but I just don't see it based on what I saw last year. How much better are the Quakers ?

Let me know if you're going to attend the GC vs. HSC game. I'll invite you to our tailgate, assuming we do one.

tfa,

Guilford is such an enigma this year, it's hard to predict.  I will say I think the Quakers are significantly better this fall and have progressed as the season unfolds.  I personally think GC should have beaten Greensboro in game one and think we would win if played today.  Greensboro, however, is not HSC or RMC or W&L ... so we could get blown out this Saturday and next, but I think we'll be much more competitive than the past few years.  The line might more accurately be 10-17 points, but I wanted to support my team.  :)

I'm seriously considering the trip to HSC on Oct. 27, so I certainly appreciate your offer.  I've visited the campus, but never attended a Tiger home football game - should be quite a treat.  Thanks.  As I've mentioned before, I grew up in Patrick County, so much of my childhood/teenage focus and experiences were in southside Virginia.  Please just accept me as a native Virginian who defected to the "dark side" when I was young and impressionable.  lol

Adam Turer did a nice job of covering the football resurgence at intracity rivals Guilford and Greensboro in this week's Mid-Atlantic Around the Region.  Thanks.

Come on Nova.

You know and I know I am a ramp jumping, ruck sack humping, number one on the breecher team, Ranger hard head and you are a "former" hippie. LOL.

I do love your loyalty to VA but there is a reason that there is a West "By God" Virginia. And it's not the war of Southern War ......uh.....independence either.

It's all those snobby bow tie (W&L) and UVA frat boys with their wine and cheese every Saturday.  ;)Which incidently I got thrown out of the UVA-GT game in 95 or 96. I might have said something to someone.. Can't remember.  ;) But that's my bone

Enough entertainment. I do no think it will be a blow out by RMC. In fact I think it may be a upset if played at at GC-Q.

They got to be pumped jacked up after eating Eagle feathers. If RMC is looking ahead....never know. Guess why they will play it anyway. Good luck

All said tongue in check, abnrgr.  My life post- grad school has all been in NC.  I love all three states in which I've lived (NC, SC and VA), but they are all definitely different in their views of history.  lol  All I know is when I needed a passport, I had to get my birth certificate from Richmond.  :)  Not a lot of the wine and cheese set in Patrick County, although former Generals QB Christian Batcheller attending PCHS.  His Dad and his Step-Dad, however, are both MDs, so there may be a connection there.

jknezek

Batcheller was a good QB for W&L. Not exactly in our heydey unfortunately, but he still holds some W&L pass records including passing attempts in a career, passing yards in a career, consecutive 200 yard passing games, and 200 yard games in a career. He shows up second and third in a bunch of other records as well. For all that, I think he was a better baseball player than QB in the end. If I remember one of the stories I wrote about him way back when, he played in the minors or at least had a bunch of good summerball experiences.

A good guy too. He graduated the year before me and our paths crossed quite a bit in those days.
