This was a very good year for the ODAC. Competitive as usual, a playoff win, and multiple players and teams finishing in top 10 statistically.

I looked up as best I could and could not find that an ODAC player has ever had more yards than Nance had this year. Is anyone aware of an ODAC player going over 4000 yards in a season?

Great question. Probably get an immediate answer on the OAC boards, but not counting the Stagg it has been quite a while. There was at least one time that, had the top seeds played out, UMU probably WOULD have gone on the road, but that year there was an upset that prevented it. I can't remember the year, 2008 maybe?

1996.  At Wisconsin-La Crosse.  Won 39-21 on the way to their second championship.

I was always under the assumption that the NCAA quietly "seeded" the four quadrants.  So the home teams are determined before the games are played.  It's not like they re-seed after each round like the NAIA.

They used to seed them out loud. Now, indeed, they seed them and won't tell anyone.

I am looking for some understanding of the all region teams.  The ODAC number 1 punter made third team and another ODAC punter made first team.  I am just a little confused on how the teams are picked.  Does your class have that much pull?  I am not saying anything about the players I just do not understand the system.

The RMC punter was first in the nation in net punting and RMC also lead the nation in punting defense.

I am personally a huge fan of Will Farrell of HSC. I think it is a shame that he was left off the first team. Will started every game in his career (44), winning 32 (3 more than any other senior in the ODAC) he was named all ODAC 3 times, named by the Richmond TD Club as the best offensive lineman in VA, an AFCA All-American in 2012, the anchor on the offensive line on a team that was multiple-deminsional and lead the ODAC in total offense and scoring, played 4 NCAA playoff games, won 2 conference championships, he is also a finalist the National Football Federation's Campbell award and has had several NFL scouts visit HSC to see him. No other lineman of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd teams have a more impressive resume.

The RMC punter is good no question.  I understand that the RMC team is ranked first in net punting and punt defense with the help of a very good punter.  On the other hand the Guilford punter is ranked first in punt average.  I assume (and I know that assuming can be a bad thing) that the reason the ODAC put the Guilford punter as first team was he had the best average.

Large voting core versus small voting core can sometimes give you different results. Since SIDs across the South vote for the D3 All-Region team, those guys probably looked at the basic stats and couldn't ignore "FIRST IN NATION". It's a big flashy simple stat that can decide things quickly.

The All-ODAC team is voted on by people only in the ODAC who actually saw both players play. It allowed them to make a choice on just punting instead of a stat regarding punt teams. I know the Guilford punter did far more damage to W&L than the RMC punter did, but if I was the SID from the ASC I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have ignored "FIRST IN NATION" not having seen both play.

I agree with your comment on first in the nation for net punt.  That is what I did not understand how do you overlook the one who is first in the nation with punt average?  I just looked at NCAA stats and RMC is now second.  Thank you for trying to help me understand but it still does not help me with how the number 1 punt average player is put on a third team all region.

Thanks again for your comments

There were probably a bunch of SIDs that didn't got 1-2 for ODAC punters. They probably awarded one of their own worthy conference punters and that probably pushed the Guilford punter down a slot over what he probably deserved, especially if the ODAC split some votes. Is it fair? Well, the world isn't fair. Sometimes you just have to live with it.

All I know is Centre's punter in 2012 killed W&L (he was all-region and even got an NFL look at one point). Guilford's punter in 2013 killed W&L. RMC's punter certainly didn't help the Generals. It's tough when you get those big stops and still get punished by the best punters around!

Pat Coleman

Punting isn't all about having the longest punts. The Macon punter put 40% of his kicks inside the 20, more than a quarter of his punts resulted in a fair catch and he had 11 times as many kicks inside the 20 as he had touchbacks.

The Guilford's kid's punts were longer but he put six of them in the end zone compared to 12 inside the 20 (29%).
