#22 Hampden-Sydney goes out to Indiana and keeps it very close, losing to #16 Wabash by less than 2 touchdowns, 34-21.

Hmmm.

My thoughts exactly...  Close?

Close I'll give them. The actual quote is very close. Seems a stretch given how Wabash was going in the second half. HSC flattered a bit with the last TD, but the game is 60 minutes so you take the score as it ended.

Yeah, I agree. Game was competitive, sure, but this is a pretty humorous bit of spin. "less than 2 touchdowns" (as though the margin being 13 instead of 14 makes it a "very close" game?)
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

I can see it if Wabash scored with 3 minutes left to make it 34-21.  But that's not what happened.  We shouldn't pretend that there wasn't a three touchdown spread in the fourth quarter.

Guilford put a thorough beat down on Greensboro tonight, 52-0.  Greensboro's in for a long season, I think.

About W&L handling Averett...

Yep. Hats off to Averett. They made plays and bottled up the Generals forcing W&L to throw a lot and not well. Too many mistakes and penalties killed the Generals. On the other hand it keeps alive W&L's streak of having never won a D3 road opener. You have to go back to the 60s to find a Generals' road opening win.  W&L has a lot of work to do if they are going to match last year's totals.

Shocking. W&L must feel like Tiberius's Minnows....

abnrgr:  Wally isn't prone to piling on; he is, on the other hand, good at balanced analysis. Yesterday was a good football game, and Nash and Walker are  talented and entertaining to watch.   I hope H-SC can develop another receiver as a valid second option. But after halftime that game was not very close, not even close.  A late TD pass made the score more respectable.  I will say this:  with Nance and Walker my heart was in my throat even though the margin got to 3TDs.  All good luck to ODAC teams as they try to stop that combination.  And the H-SC defense put up a strong effort.  In the end, Wabash just consistently moved the football, dominated the clock, and won the game.  I believe that if you ask the H-SC fans present at the game, they will admit that the Wabash defense is the real deal.
Two points:  all scores count, but two of H-SC's scores were long passes; the other score was a 29 yard drive.  Wabash did not allow the Tigers to drive the field, and they did not allow Nance to become comfortable in the pocket.
When he had the time, he delivered the football on target, but too often he was hurried, and sacked 6X in the first half.  Wabash fans are looking forward to visiting H-SC next year for the rematch.

It's was nice to get a shutout, but GCQ knows tougher opponents lie ahead.

Let's not get too carried away. W&L lost a football game on the road to a not so good team by a small margin. It happens but I've said a few times that W&L probably wasn't going to be a contender this year. That's a far cry from being trained as small boys to follow a mad emperor around a pool licking his privates. Remind me to be less nice to Guilford the next time they go 5-25 over a three year period. It'll come around again...

5-25 over a 3 year period!! That's is hardly a prediction. That WILL HAPPEN. Hell they get pasted all the way thru. The Minnows are a certain mention every season

I thought that Wally's analysis was pretty fair to all concerned. I'm still waiting to hear from our friend HSCTigerfan, though; he's been noticeably silent for the last 24 hours.

Wabash and its broadcast are first class!  Broadcast had instant replays, sideline commentary, and multiple cameras.  First rate!  It is the best in DIII.  Seems like the young men at Wabash are high quality, wish my son had considered Wabash!

We drove 5 hours after the game and 7 hours today. I was to tired when we stopped last night deal with writing anything.

My thoughts:
Wabash D is very good (duh)
No one can defend Holton Walker
No doubt about it the OL needs to improve and they will.
The game yesterday can only help HSC in the long run.

About the OL - no one on the OL had ever faced a defense like that. Heck no one that is on the HSC team has ever faced a defense like that.  The offensive linemen had a total of 12 starts between them and that was by 1 player. None of the other 4 ever started a game.  I'm not 100% on this, but I think 3 of them never played a down with the first string last year. (going on memory) Their first game together as a unit certainly was not what they hoped for but in the end they faced a team that returned 8 starters on the #1 ranked defense in the nation from 2013 - an exceptionally experienced and very well coached defense. I should not offer excuses but in my opinion had all five linemen from last season returned this fall they too would have had a huge challenge in yesterday's game. The Wabash defense is going to make a lot of offenses look completely inept this fall. The HSC offense certainly was not firing on all cylinders but they did not look inept. The one thing I'm very confident is the OL and HSC will continue to get better.

It hurts to lose. But imagine how it might feel right now if you are a Macon fan. Ouch. HSC needs adjustments. Looks like RMC needs an overhaul.  RMC only had 277 yards of offense with 134 yards coming in the forth quarter when it appears with the score being 35 to 3 both teams emptied their benches.

As far as the HS OLine goes that can be blamed on the coaches. They knew last year their OLine would be an issue this year. Yet even in the blowouts last year they kept their OLine starters in the game and the #2's hardly got any playing time at all. You can't just throw an inexperienced OLine out there and expect everything to work out fine. 6 sacks.....ouch.
