Maryville's alma mater reads "Where Chilhowee's lofty mountains pierce the southern blue..." But really the school is in the valley and the mountains are several miles away. Tennessee basically east of Nashville all claim the mountains.

yeah. I'm not looking forward to pulling the grade up or down around Monteagle in the old motor home. It always gives me the creeps about boiling my brakes. Every trip up there causes me to fine tooth the brake system before we leave. That grade and the one on I40 north of Asheville give me the willies on the East Coast. Things you worry about when driving a large, old, heavy vehicle...

Wait 'til you hit I-77 just north of the NC/Va. state line, especially if you're southbound.  :o
This is the area in which I grew up ... at least you have "truck" escape ramps.  You should try US Hwy 52 from Mt. Airy, NC to Hillsville, VA, which parallels I-77 ... it was the ONLY way up or down the mountain before I-77 was built.  There are probably STILL trucks, cars and team buses off the side of mountain.  lol

Y'all should have seen what the Monteagle grade was like while I was attending Sewanee back in the early 80s.   Rather than building new interstate back in the 1960s, TDOT just turned the Chattanooga-bound traffic down the original US-41/64 grade.  About seven miles worth of three lanes of curvy 6-7% grade, no runaway ramps, and a turn at the bottom through a rock cut just waiting to catch the truck driver who lost his brakes.    Still have nightmares about some of the truck wrecks I saw on that old road.   It took nearly six years to build the replacement.

Game time forecast is partly to mostly cloudy with a high of 72dF.... sounds like the way football weather should be.

Looking forward to the game. We are hiding at Marion county park outside Jasper for the night. Closest campground I could find heading northbound. We will tackle the grade both ways tomorrow. Drove through some nasty storms on the way up but tomorrow looks awesome. Good luck to the ODAC teams tomorrow.

Good luck tomorrow H-SC tigers.  Nash to Walker. . . TD, TD, TD.  It was a pleasure to see you at Wabash last week, and looking forward to visiting next year.

Jk

Your Generals are tough to defend. I think the HSC defense did a better job then most by holding W&L to 272 yds on the ground, an average of 3.8 yards per rush but 272 is still a bunch to give up.

I've got to ask; your take on THE GAME ?

Hasa

Sorry for your Quakers loss but I didn't think CAU was a good match up for you guys. They are just a bit more physical at this point.

Well, the game went pretty much as I was afraid it would go. HSC got out in front early, for at least the third year in a row and I'm getting sick of watching that! W&L just isn't good enough to come back from that. Nance did not make mistakes, and the Generals turned the ball over 3 times (twice were killers). So the Generals made the mistakes and HSC didn't. Since I thought HSC was a better team this year, that needed to be reversed for the Generals to have a shot.

It was nice seeing a bit of a rally in the second half, but then Nance came out and salted the game away. W&L is missing a viable pitch recipient this year. So while Hollerith (the giant first year who did most of the damage) is going to be a beast up the middle for a couple years to come, W&L is going to have to find a way to compliment him with the speed and outside option. Right now the threat is there, but the qb is not getting the ball to the pitch man effectively. It's been this way all year.

I thought the Generals played as well as could be expected on defense, but there was a limit and it was reached in the fourth quarter. Overall, W&L is slightly better on defense, but not as good on offense as in the past, and they are losing the turnover battle almost every game. An unhealthy combination that has them staring at 5-5 or 6-4 this year. We have a first year QB that showed some promise at times, if we can pair him with Hollerith I think in two years W&L will be challenging again. Not sure about next year.

Nice win for HSC.  Looked like it was very close throughout.  Congratulations, Tigers!

Congratulations as well to RMC and E&H.  Too bad Sewanee squeaked by W&L.   ODAC 3-1 so far today and 3-0 against the USASAC.

Great meeting you today at our game.   Really thought W&L was going to pull it out until Sewanee's defense pulled off great plays on the failed two-point try and the block of the field goal attempt.      Save travels to y'all and best of luck in the rest of the season.

Nice win Quakers! Well balanced across the board. Glad to see the ODAC bringing in the wins!

I was there.  It was a complete game win, 52-20 over Methodist!

Someone let me know about the Quakers this year ? They are putting up big numbers on both sides of the ball ! Are they for real ? I know their non conference schedule is weak but they are steamrolling teams !

You as well. I briefly looked for you at the end of the game to say congratulations but I really needed to get back to the coach and pack it up so we could get on the road. At halftime it looked like a stinker of a game, but the second half was very entertaining. We talked about it being one of those games where the loser wanted it least, but by the end it was about the Tigers wanting it more. The stop on the 2 point conversion was just pure effort by your boys and they deserve a hats off for it. The field goal... well, 50 yards was a lot to ask and he hit low trying to drive it far enough. Your guys got their hands up, but they didn't have to be very high.

The Generals aren't what they were a few years ago, but I think Sewanee is better than they were. Win a few more this year! I'm going to try and get to the Sewanee-BSC game this year so if you make it down send me a message. You'll be more than welcome at the tailgate I set out overlooking the field. Nice job by the Tigers to end the streak!

The Quakers are very much for real. They spent a few years building this team relying on youth and letting it mature. I don't know if this year they can knock off HSC but they'll have the same nucleus next year as well. Lot of football to be played but I think the Quakers are going to be sitting right there in the ODAC hunt.

The HSC and R-MC rivalry one of two traditional D-III rivalries to make it into Southern Living's "South's Biggest Rivalries" sweepstakes.   The other (but, of course) was Sewanee-Rhodes.
