Congratulations to Methodist and LaGrange for their 1-2 finish at the DIII National Men's Golf Championship in Greensboro.  Host Guilford finished 8th in the 41 team field.

And my Titans finished 9th, just five strokes behind the hosts.  I'd be happier about that, except they went steadily down hill: t3rd after day one, then 4th, 6th, and 9th, with their strokes going up each day. :(

We were in Greensboro for several days soon after the tourney so my wife could do genealogical research (including at Hege Library).  One branch of her ancestry was Quaker - some devout (and several buried in the Deep River cemetery); others were 'unFriended' ;D a century or two before Facebook!  Her most direct proven ancestor was a Thrift, which then ties to several other family names.  She suspects the Mendenhalls (founders of Jamestown (NC, not the one in VA!) and among the founders of the New Garden School which evolved into Guilford College) are also related, but has yet to establish a definitive link.

I was VERY impressed with the beauty of GC - I'm a sucker for campuses which have uniformly classical buildings and plenty of mature trees!

Thanks, Mr. Ypsi.  It is a beautiful campus.  BTW, one of the public schools in Greensboro is named Mendenhall.  Deep River Friends Meeting is an oasis of Quakerism that is rapidly being surrounded by urban sprawl in north High Point.  Yes, your IWU Titans are always in the mix.

While shopping at the New Garden Road Target in Greensboro yesterday, I met the parents of Nick Jones (2013-14 WR at RMC, #14).  Nick graduated from Northern Guilford HS in Summerfield, NC and attended RMC for a year and a half.  In January, Nick transerred to Guilford and participated in spring drills with the Quakers.  According to his parents, Nick is recovering from some nagging injuries and may sit out the 2015 season.  It's a shame because Nick knows Matt Pawlowski (Northwest Guilford HS) and would be another receiver for an already potent offense.

Hasanova the Guilford coach is doing a good job of recruiting locally. My son played at Ragsdale in 08 and 09. In two years the team went 26-2. He was recruited by every ODAC school except Guilford. In fact I know of no one off those teams recruited by the old coach. Mearite - Ragsdale 08, started at Pembroke and ended up at GC. I did notice that GC got a QB out of Richmond and HSC landed a QB from Ragsdale - Jamestown, NC. (Small city between G'boro and High Point for those who aren't familiar.)
Hampden Sydney College
ODAC Champions 77, 82, 83, 87, 07, 09, 11, 13, 14
NCAA Playoffs - 77, 07, 09, 10, 11, 13, 14
The "Game" 60 wins and counting...

HSCTiger fan, I agree with you.  Coach Rusiewicz and his staff have done a great job of recruiting locally ... in addition to creating a winning program, it's increased fan attendance with parents and extended family able to travel to more games.  I remember Nick Mearite ... a good all around offensive threat for the Quakers ... in fact, his aunt worked for me as a temp a few years ago.  Guilford will, as most ODAC school do, miss some local kids because of the "I want to go to school away from home" thought ... and I get that.  When I went away to college, I wanted to experience new things and a new place.  Also, as with most ODAC schools, our alumni base is all over the map, so we will get legacy students and alumni recommendations from all over the USA and, for that matter, the world.

Expecting a breakthrough season in Greensboro this year ... a lot of positive pieces are in place.  Perhaps this will be the year of the Quaker!

I'm more basketball oriented, but it's nice to see an ODAC football program get this kind of pre-season respect.

I'd seen this press release earlier on Guilford's website, y_jack_lok.  Nice to see on paper, but I am always cautious until I see the results on the field.  Smith and Hunt certainly deserve their accolades, but I was surprised to see no mention for QB Pawlowski ... probably a very crowded group of contenders here.

It's a long way from a four-way tie for first in the ODAC to No. 13 in the country. These folks that only do Division III one week a year lack some perspective. I'll be interested to see how our preseason voters shake this out, but I'm sure no ODAC team will be in the Top 15.

Exactly why I hadn't mentioned it in this forum.

I don't think you need to feel guilt for mentioning a team being recognized in a national publication.

Besides Lindy's Preseason Poll has faired well compared to D3Football's Preseason poll when considering how many finished the season ranked in the final D3 Top 25.

2014 Lindys had 17 preseason picks finish in D3's final 25. D3 had 15.
2013 Lindys had 13 preseason picks finish in D3's final 25. D3 had 14
2012 Lindys had 12 preseason picks finish in D3's final 25. D3 had 14

What does that mean?  I don't know, but think even casual fans could pick 6 of the top 10 in any given year without any research. I mean it's not going out on a limb to pick MU, UWW, MHB, Linfield, Wesley, or North Central. In the next 10 you might pick Wabash, Wittenberg,  John Hopkins, Wheaton, St Johns Fisher, Hobart and Widener.  There's 13 that are going to finish Top 25 most years. It seems to me that preseason polls are not much more than guessing regardless who is doing the picking.

There's more than one way to measure a Top 25. None of our 2014 preseason Top 25 teams finished 3-6, but one of Lindy's teams did.

You are right Pat. I'm not saying you guys aren't the authority. But with so many teams it seems it is pretty much a crap shoot outside the top 10.

I heavily edited my post before your reply. But the point I was trying to make remains the same.
