SU football program just found out today that that they have a ton of work to do in order for them to compete for an ODAC title.

To my amateur perception  the R-MC offense ran a greater variety of plays today than I've seen before and appeared to have the SU defense off balance. The QB, who previously seldom ran the ball on purpose, rushed 6 times for 84 yards. A couple of those were times when he was looking to throw then took off, but several also looked to be designed as runs.  In all an outstanding performance by the Jackets. Gotta stay strong for four more games. Nothing comes easy.

They have certainly altered the offense this year, operating out of the pistol much more often. From what I recall, the past 2 years, they operated almost exclusively under center, often with multiple backs and TE's. The scheme has been wildly successful this year, throwing JHU off for 3 quarters, and barreling through the ODAC so far, with the exception of WLU. I also wonder if they decided to slow things down against WLU, knowing their quick strike capabilities (alternatively, it speaks to their defensive prowess).

In college, it's really hard to have dominance at all 3 levels. For several years, we've done a great job with the front 7. But seeing the progress made in the backfield is heartening for the rest of the year and, hopefully, the playoffs.

I assume it's Clark he's tied with but who has more current or not?

The old saying is defense wins championships.  SU has absolutely no defense.  Kind of a head scratcher considering Yoder was a defensive coordinator for years at Hobart and did great things at a very competitive Liberty league.  The Hornets defense is just plain terrible
Offensively, we all know what the passing game can do when they are on. Bauserman and Stewart are very good. They have one of the best lineman in the conference with left guard/tackle Coffman but the run game is suspect at best. Byrd is an exciting scat back style freshman, but they seem to struggle with controlling the clock with the ground game.
If you can't run effectively and can't play any semblance of defense there is no way you can compete for a title
RMC is very talented and seems to be hitting on all cylinders right now. It will take a team to be at their very best to knock off the Yellow Jackets

^^^ Re the SU running game: when they ran the ball yesterday it was pretty effective. I thought they should have run more, especially early in the game before R-MC built up a lead. If they had stuck with the run and been successful, it could have been a different game. But, they have a great passing game and before yesterday the Jacket pass defense was suspect (at least in my mind). So I guess I understand why they would go with their strength.

R-MC with 5 points in this week's top 25 voting. That could be one ballot with them at #21 or 2+ ballots from 22-25. Some voters share their ballots. I'm curious to know how many ballots they appeared on.

Pat Coleman

On one ballot (which does not belong to Keith McMillan, I feel it's important to note).

As a newbie to ODAC football and D3 for that matter, I have a
couple questions for all those on the board.
First, in what order would you rank ODACs football program s? Secondly how would you rank the coaching staffs on game day performance only? Explain answers if you care.
Just trying to figure out this league a little bit.

Just trying to figure out this league a little bit.

I think the premiere programs in the league, for the last 12 years more or less, are H-SC, W&L and RMC. Those three have won every championship since 2005 and generally have been in the mix in the years they haven't won. H-SC has the most championships and is the most consistent through the period, though they have fallen off a bit in the last few years, while W&L has been up and down but really good when up, and RMC was consistent, but not as much at the top over the bulk of the period.

Right now? If I had to rank them I'd go RMC, W&L, H-SC, Ferrum/Shenandoah/Bridgewater, E&H/Guilford.

For coaching staffs, it's hard not to put RMC at the top right now. That defense is brutal, and the offense is rounding into shape. Coach Arruza has been very clever in his varying his offense this season with the opponent. When he has the Jimmies and Joes, you just can't look past him because he has plenty of Xs and Os. Until last season, I'd have had W&L topping the list, but with the coaching change and what I've seen this year, that is no longer true in my mind. The Generals defense has been fantastic, the offense has under performed this year so far in my opinion.

You can't over look Coach Favret. He has been the cream of the ODAC for a very long time but seems to have gotten a little off the last few years. After that, I like Coach R at Guilford. He's a really good coach, but recruiting seems to be an issue. Coach Clarke is long removed from his glory years, but you can't just pretend they didn't happen. Coach Yoder (Shenandoah) and Coach Newsome (E&H) have never really knocked me over. I don't know enough about Ferrum to judge, and Coach LeRose at W&L is too new to place.

With several strong D2 schools in NC, it has to hurt GC recuriting . There are 33 ncaa football teams in North Carolina, across all divisions.

Many kids think of themselves as major D1 prospects. When they find out their not and if they want to play football then they should be picking the best situation for them. The SAC 8 schools only have 25 athletic and 11 academic scholarships to offer. Those 25 scholarships are split up between 80 to 90 kids.  I'm not sure if the academic scholarships are split.  They seldom if ever offer full ride athletic scholarships to any one player.  The academic money offered by the ODAC teams is in many cases more than the athletic money the SAC 8 teams offer.

So when you look at the money offered, facilities and quality of education the ODAC IMO competes very well against any team in the SAC 8 and most other D2s in NC.
