Some interesting news from my home front. My mother-in-law and father-in-law are both positive and symptomatic for Covid-19 in South Florida. Their grandson (my 16 year old nephew) is asymptomatic but positive. 12 of 16 players on his soccer team, which were cleared to start practices in mid May, are positive, 4 are symptomatic.

My in-laws had been quarantining until the weekend before last when they invited their grandson for a few days due to a rough home situation. At the time, none of this was known. During his visit, 3 team members showed symptoms and word was passed around the team they were getting tested. But with a 3 day lag between test and result, the grandson had left my in-laws before positive results came back. Once those players tested positive, all players were asked to be tested. While 3 more days passed, my in-laws developed symptoms. By the time their grandson's test came back positive, they were off to get their own testing done. 3 days later they now have their positive results.

So far, about 6 days after onset of symptoms, my father-in-law, late 50s and in really good shape, has shown mild flu symptoms. Low grade fever, congestion, cough, aches and pains and a lot of discomfort. My mother-in-law, also late 50s and a former smoker (quit 3 years ago after 40 years) and in ok shape, has shown severe flu symptoms. She says this is as miserable as she's been in her life. So far nothing that requires hospitalization, but the doctor calls daily and says she is borderline because of a persistent 102-103 fever and mild shortness of breath. She is struggling to get from bed to bathroom without stopping.

So, what's the point of this? Team sports are going to be tricky. Not necessarily for the athletes, but for those around them. If it was my kid playing a contact sport this fall I'd be very concerned. The lag between acquisition and symptoms, as well as the lag between test and result, are massive periods of unknown transmission. Be safe everyone, especially if you are in an at-risk group.

Thanks. Going to be a hairy couple days around here I think. We haven't seen them since March, and they are 12 hrs away by car, but my wife wants to go help while knowing she can't and shouldn't. It's definitely going to take a toll on her.

I am sorry to hear about your family in that situation. Thank you for sharing. I, too, fear that we might be seeing this type of scenario starting to happen over the next 4 weeks now that restrictions, including athletics, are starting to be lifted. Anyway, I will keep your family in prayer also

Thank you. I hope this will be nothing more than a severe inconvenience to them. But yeah, it's something to think about. Asymptomatic transmission has been hotly debated. Consider me a believer that it's a problem.

jknezek,

So sorry about the situation with your relatives and how difficult it is on your wife not being able to help.

Thank you so much for sharing this. It is important for all of us to hear these kinds of first hand reports so we don't get complacent about the virus.

Do you mind if I share your words on my limited social network, since it doesn't identify you in any way? I will be sure not to mention where I got this. If not okay, I fully understand.

Hope everyone in your family makes it through all this OK! They're in my prayers.

I hope a lot of people read your post above. It really tells the story of how this illness spreads. It should also serve as a warning to anyone making plans for a school/football season. I'm sure people are aware of this but this is a great example of what could be.

Stay safe my friend. 😷 🎓 🏈

Thanks. Hopefully it will pass and another few days without it getting any worse will be good. It's food for thought certainly. My family is outside NYC in CT, so it's been anxious days for them. We figured any trouble would pop up there and were blindsided by this news.

Thanks. I won't do anything that could lead anyone to figure out who wrote it. I certainly would never use your posting "handle". There is nothing I can see in your post that would make it possible for anyone to determine the source. I just think it is really important for people to read these personal accounts of the effect of the virus on people's lives. It's way too easy to let our guard down and enable the virus to spread when everyone should be doing as much as possible to prevent that from happening, even if it means forgoing sports for a season. Thanks again.

jknezek - hoping for the best for your extended family.   The fact that your m-i-l is having such difficulty with a very short walk is of extreme concern - would seem to be more than "mild shortness of breath".   I pray that neither of them will experience the "second week crash" that causes even more distress - if either suddenly worsen, do what you can to get them to a hospital/critical care facility ASAP.

Many stories on this - https://www.advisory.com/daily-briefing/2020/05/04/covid-crash would be one.  https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/11/health/coronavirus-cytokine-storm.html might explain what is happening during these 'storms'.

All I can do is report what I've been told. They are in contact with the dr. daily and yesterday symptoms did not get worse. I have not heard anything today yet. The dr. has already told my m-i-l to go to the hospital if it gets any worse. Everyone seems reluctant to send people to the hospital if it can be avoided. I suspect reasons are varied and include everything from wanting to keep beds available for the very sickest down through the morale hit to the patient that comes from being admitted and essentially isolated from any familial support system. I also suspect that since there is little that can be done except putting patients on a ventilator, which is essentially a last resort, they have no reason to want people cluttering up hospitals until that point is very close.

Wife finally talked to her mother today. No change for either her or F-I-L. No worse but no better. I figure that'll be about the best we can expect for a few more days. But yeah, it's made their life pretty miserable.

Praying for a full recovery Jeremy. Sorry to hear it's lingering on.
On another note, we heard last night that W&L has canceled all games outside of ODAC. Best hope right now is for an abbreviated season.
