A follow up:

A little more poking around in the Cathlic site has an old press release that Catholic was joining the ODAC in 1999, and that starting in 1999 there would be a "newly expanded" 28 team arrangement, which may very well have been the start of the Class A/B/C structure.

The same page also notes that Catholic belonged to the ODAC from 1982-1984 as a full member competing in all sports.
NO, Tusky, You cannot MOON Dr. Geisert!

Catholic got a bid in 1997.
Catholic was not in the ODAC in 1997.
Nobody from the ODAC got a bid in 1997.

What's so hard to understand??

I just read Hasanova's recap of the Guilford-RMC contest yesterday and I think he pretty well summed the game up nicely.  Yes, definitely the Jackets came to play and aside from a couple of miscues that led to Quaker scores in the second quarter we were right there matching Guilford score for score.  Ball (RMC's QB) put on a show definitely, but I was also impressed by Guilford's QB Vogelbach.  He lays the ball right where it needs to be and his receivers caught almost everything.  Both teams played pretty good defense, but the defensive backs got stung several times on both sides.  It was an exciting game and both teams fought hard to win.  That punt at the end of the game really handicapped us and tenacious defense by the Quakers got them a safety to put the game essentially out of reach with very little time remaining although I kept my fingers crossed for a miracle until the clock ticked down to zero.  Congratulations Quakers ...  I think both of these teams will be much better teams for the next couple or three years than this year's records reflect.  Lots of freshmen on both teams, but there's a lot of football talent at both schools.  (On a side note I have to say I thought the officiating was really atrocious ... they were really flag-happy against both teams.  Some of the calls appeared to be ludicrous in my opinion ...)

Exactly.  In addition to Catholic's two stints in the ODAC, some of our readers might be interested to know that new USAC member Maryville was once in the ODAC.

My guess is that Ezoneking6 (and other folks, too) may not be aware of the NCAA playoff structure ten years ago and assumed that the ODAC got an automatic bid back then.

I seem to recall (and I may have this wrong) that the entire DIII field in 1997 and thereabouts was at-large, which makes the CUA NCAA bids in 1997 and 1998 even more impressive.

Information like that would also make your observations about 1997 a little easier to understand.

Nobody else got an automatic qualifier in 1997 either. They didn't exist.

I thought this sentence would cover that.

rmcjacketsfan -

Thanks for your assessment of my game coverage and the Quakers ... both of us try our best, but know we have room for improvement.  lol  As I mentioned earlier, I was very impressed by RMC Sophomore QB Ball and WR Shareef.  You have to think Ball will get even better with time.  Without the 3 INT's/1 fumble and the good field position they gave GC, I'm not sure the 2nd quarter would have been so lobsided.  GC has a knack for turning close games into donnybrooks (if anyone ever listens to the GC radio broadcasts or webcasts, you know one of our announcers uses this word ad nauseum - guys, get a thesaurus!), so I was sweating out the last minute or so myself.  The safety and resulting 8-point lead did cause everyone on the home side to breath a collective sigh of relief.

Both teams have a lot of positive things to which they can look forward the next few years.  Maybe I'll make the trip to Ashland next year - always wanted to go.

And I agree, what was up with some of the calls - against both sides?  Signed, flag weary in Greensboro.

Pat, I wrote a comment about the BC-W&L game last night.  So far today I have received notification that there were several responses and I wanted to read them, but when I hit the link in the e-mail, it brings me back to this very page.  I don't see my comment at all.  Could you enlighten me on where it is.  I did see CNUsfinest's comment last night because I was still on line when he resonded .   I am not so computer literate as all of you all seem to be.. Being as old as dirt doesn't help.  I would appreciate any help you could give.  Thanks :)

I don't think that I have yet thawed out from this afternoon's game.  And holding one's breath for 3 hours is not so good for one's health either.  But as Coach says "Great teams find ways to win."  And those of us who have follwed BC football for years (and I do mean years!) have seen many a different way to victory!  Today it was definitely the special teams that stepped up.  A blocked extra point, a blocked field goal and a blocked punt, why I almost thought I was in Blacksburg.  It was certainly cold enough!  I also want to mention the great job that David and Coley did kicking and punting respectively.  I wonder, though, how many of you were aware that our young men had more than the game of football on their plate this week.  This was a very difficult week for the team.  Wednesday they had a very special visitor who came to celebrate his 11th birthday with them.  He loved being with them.  He had served as an honorary captain walking out for the coin toss , so proud to be part of the team.  And make no mistake.  He was part of the team.  It was how he wanted to spend his birthday, with his football team.  They shared a deep bond of courage:  he had that in abundance, for, you see, he died the next day on his way back to the Duke Medical Center for testing.  Did you notice David Blackwell's helmet during the game?  It had a huge KC on it for Kelly Coffman.  The BC game balls had Kelly's initials on them.  Sometimes when games take on added importance, it becomes more difficult to perform.  And then some part of the team needs to step up.  Today we needed the special teams and our Dbacks to step up and they did.  The game wasn't pretty,  the runs weren't glorious, in fact they were few and far between.  The passes were not connecting the way they usually do.  We were facing an extremely good W&L team (gee I wonder how Peter Dean  :) would have done in his years as QB with the kind of protectin that Tweardy got today, but I digress).  The game meant a great deal to them as well.  It was palpable in the air how much it meant to both teams and fans.  But in the end, BC clawed their way to the end of the game with a 4 point lead.  We did what we had to do to win.  That was what was needed.  Kelly, the win wasn't text-book pretty, however,  it was heart-felt and hard-fought.  But most of all, it was for you.  Be at peace, young man.  You have earned your rest.  The team will carry on and finish the goals of the season and you will ever be in their hearts.

See, it's still on the board.

It was actually me, not Pat, that moved your post.  You started (probably by accident) a new thread under South Region topics ... so I simply merged it with this thread.

rmcjacketsfan,

I must say yall have the best defensive line I have seen all yea.  I have not had nearly as much trouble with a player as I did especially #75.  I had to play so hard that both of my hands are bruised to the point i cannot make a fist with them today.  It was a ball game to the wire, and im just glad we came out on top.  Good luck to the jackets for the rest of the season.

Yes, I remember 1983 in basketball when Maryville beat Bridgewater 3 times by  1 point. Twice in the regular season and once in the ODAC finals.

BC is #18 in the poll this week. I am glad we are slightly above Ohio Northern and pleasantly surprised.

I remember getting beat pretty badly at Maryville in '79, then beating them at home 24-0 in our '80 championship season.
