How old are these coaches?  I've always questioned if players respect younger coaches or older coaches more..

Stan Watson (LB at MUC)- Class of 2003.  Coach Montgomery brought him last year as the DC/LB coach.  He coached at MUC in 2004.
Anthony Frate (LB at MUC) - Class of 2004.  Coached at NCWC (North Carolina Wesleyan College) in 2005.
Joe Montgomery (DB at MUC) - Class of 2006.  Is a Graduate Assistant this year and is HC's son.
National Champions - 13: 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2017

EHCsports.com reports E&H has 80 newcomers this year.  Looks like he'll have the largest recruiting class again.  But it also reports they lost 50 players (they only had like 11 seniors), so there wasn't much retention.

Thanks!  It will be interesting to see how this plays out.  I know the little league kids I coach love the fact I'm younger than their parents but it also leads to them thinking they can get away with more because I'm younger.  I could see this happening at E&H as the coaches are not far removed from some of the upperclassmen in age.   But then again I know nothing of the maturity or the leadership skills of these coaches..but I do know they will know their football if they are from MUC!

Coach Montgomery is adding more MUC graduates to his staff.  In addition to Stan Watson (DC/Linebackers) Anthony Frate and Joe Montgomery will be coaching the Defensive Backs this year.

I have always considered a younger coach with the youth and enthusiasm as one type of coach bringing one type of strength to a program.  The players respond in one way to the younger coach.

The older coach is a father or grandfather figure who brings a special type of love and wisdom to the young men that many of them seek and crave.  For some unfortunate players, this father figure has been absent in their lives for as long as they can remember.  The older coach thus has a different effect on the team.

I think that good coaching staffs have numerous presonality types to reach all players.  I know that the staff at McMurry has managed to find a diverse group of individuals, from the AD thru the coaches and onto the training and support staff, who really care for the student-athletes.  I am sure that many D3 programs have coaching staffs that are similarly constituted. :)

I think it has a lot more to do with the attitude and maturity of the coach and players.  There has to be a line between the coach and player that is not cross regardless of age. Everyone on the team has a job and as long as you respect each other's responsibilities then it should not be a problem.

Kid,
Just a point of clarification about E&H losing 50   players. On ehsports.com under their '06 Football Quick Facts it shows that indeed E&H did lose 50 letter men, however they have 65 lettermen returning. With the 80 that Coach Monty and staff recruited that makes 145 out for the first day of camp. The team roster was 115 last year. It looks like a net gain of 30 players.

All that being said you can only get 11 on the field at one time.

I honestly believe Coach Monty and staff will set the tone from the first day of camp.Actually it started in spring practice  and has carried over into the summer. The big question is how many players will be on the roster for the first game? How many will dropped by the wayside and have been weeded out?

In regards to the younger coaches;Coach Monty is not going to have a staff that can't get the job done.

There are young men who play football and then there are football players. How many football players does E&H have?

Peace I Am The E&H Dad

RE: E&H losing 50

There also has to be some fallout from those who were recruited by the prior staff who don't fit in with Coach Montgomery's staff (personal and football reasons).

does anyone have info on EHC's recruiting class for this year. I know they got a WR from Rural Retreat who is supposed to be very good, and an offensive lineman from Haysi named Josh Haynes who played in the VHSL all star game. Sadly, that is all the info I have been able to find up here in DC. Help would be appreciated!

There was a Josh Yates from Haysi in the VHSCA All-Star game ... that who you're referring to?  Listed as 6'3'', 270.  Fortunately for Emory & Henry, other VA schools don't really venture down to the Grundy area (southwestern VA), so the Wasps have had a stronghold on that area by default for awhile.

Kirasdad.

Your absolutely correct. This same issue was discussed early in the season last year on this site. The players who were recruited my the previous head coach and staff came to realize very quickly that there was a new sheriff in town. They were given every opportunity to "buy into Coach Monty's system and style of coaching". Most who choose not to "buy in" are part of that 50 not returning and those who still have not bought in will most likely be gone by the first game.

Do I think E&H will win the ODAC? No. However, you will see more intensity and aggression from the players than you have seen in past years. When the final whistle blows you will know both teams have been in a ball game.

Despite some opinions you are going to see a greatly improved E&H football team and with a much improved record. The 11 seniors need to step up, show leadership and as I stated before don't be, "young men who play football, they have to be young men who are football players!

however, some SWVA kids who were locks to go to EHC no go to UVA-Wise... the $20K per tution doesn't help either.

So far I have been able to find 2 kids from Pulaski County...a good program, and the kids who played the the VHSL game.

I think there have been a couple of commitments to E&H from Henry County - maybe Martinsville and Bassett area high schools.  It's interesting to note that Guilford also gets some kids from the Patrick-Henry-Pittsylvania corridor across Southwest Virginia.  Geographically, it's much closer to Greensboro via US 220 and US 29 from these venues (especially the southern half of the counties) than it is to most of the Virginia-based  schools.  Sometimes this is a factor when their family and friends want to travel to a lot of games.

E& H Dad, how can you not say that Emory will win the ODAC? Glad you have so much faith in the Wasps this year, or are you just downplaying what they have?  I think its important to remember that Emory is bringing back Marshall Doss, Todd Woods, Jarad Jackson and Brennan Stewart.  All of these guys are all ODAC performers  in the last couple seasons.  Yes, Emory's offense was anemic last year and the production was down, but most of that can be attributed to a complete overhaul of the system.  Emory has switched to a timing based offense under Monty whereas under Lusk (the former OC) the offense was just based on throwing up and seeing who would come down with it.  And let's not forget that Monty was All-OAC as a guard at Mount.  He won't let that line underperform again this year.  As a whole they were an embarassment, but they should be much improved.  They bring back the little guy Haslem (ESPN The Mag's All-South Academic Team) and the other senior Luton.  Juniors McCracken and Clawson, and a slew of sophomores and freshmen to push all of these guys.  The backfield is also improved with the addition of the transfer Gillespe from Mount Union and Tia'Von Hamler is back this year as well. And for those of you that fault Emory's defense last year, look at how much time they were on the field because of the offensive woes.  Its easy to get picked on when you've been on the field the entire game.  Couple that with the fact that Emory's D had extreme youth (freshman starters like Evin O'Sullivan and Bryan Furr, sophomore Jamie Whitaker) and you can see why Emory had trouble.  All those guys are bringing back a year of experience along with the seniors like Doss, Drew Pike (one of the most underrated players in the confernce) and Ricky Gibson.  Defensive End Tony Gagliano is also back after being MIA last fall and Peter Thomas (who saw a lot of playing time at FB his freshman year) is back from a knee injury and playing on the defensive side of the ball.  And I don't care what anyone says, Emory almost beat the mighty Bridgewater last year.  Clark's Eagles can blame a lack of production on the field conditions, but the truth is Emory hung with them that day.  Watch the film.  The eye in the sky don't lie.  Monty's Men went through a lot this past spring and in getting ready for this year.  This year's Emory team will surprise the naysayers.  The offensive talent is there, but has to capitalize and the defense is as experienced as it has been in a number of years. Will Emory win the ODAC? That remains to be seen, but I guarantee you that they'll be in the running and we won't see another abyssmal season like last year.  The coaches know how to win (Mount, Hiram, ONU, Thomas More), now it is up to the players to learn from them and bring Emory back to the top of the ODAC.
