I thought Guilford would be ranked at least one spot higher in the ODAC but HSC is also worthy of the #3 spot.
I thought they would be too, but they do have a new Defensive Coordinator this year and that side of the ball has room for improvement.  I can see how the voting came out this way, but I still think the Quakers will have a decent season.

I would have thought with all that HSC lost to graduation, that Guilford would have started out above them at least.  As to whether Guilford should be above Washington and Lee, the major question for W&L is whether they can score points, the major question for GC is can they stop their opponetts from scoring at will.  Last year when Bridgewater went to W&L, the Generals were only able to score 13 points (Six of those came on a BC fumble inside their own 20 yard line).  By comparison, Guilford allowd BC to score 62 points when they came to Jopson Field.  If either W&L or Guilford wants to win the ODAC this year W&L's offensive and Guilford's defensive production must improve.

RE: ODAC's press release on the preseason poll ...

Man, I got all excited reading this release ... seeing we (BC) were getting Paul Getty (AA OL) back.  Unforunately, he graduated this past May (and thus, not earning preseason AA).  But I'm assuming Mr. Kilcoyne just used last year's release as a template (the date says July 29, 2005).

with the new playing field at Catholic in, it should be interesting to see what kind of reaction the team has both CUA and the visitors.. not sure which other teams in ODAC has artificial turf.. i do know that it will be a 100% improvement when the weather gets ]bad ..

As far as letter winners are concerned, I wouldn't cite letter winners coming back as much of a statistic because there is no universal standard for winning a letter.  For instance, on the Baseball team my freshman year at Bridgewater there were several "letter winners" who did not appear in an varsity intercollegiate game.  It would seem to me that the award of a letter is more of an internal matter for the program in question and not really much of a standard for returning talent.  Now if we want to talk about returning starters or returning players who were in their team's playing rotation that is a different matter...

Congratulations Religion Major on your "Baseball Letter" at Bridgewater!!  How many innings did you play?

Don't have a count of the innings but it was only a few games each year.  I'll admit it and if you care to check the official record will say the same.  We had one letter winner my freshman year that did not even appear in one game.  I'll even give you a point of karma because I had that one coming to me. ;D

Guys,

Your killing me!! I surrender!! It appears I've used the wrong term and or citied the wrong information in reference to the term "lettermen returning".

When I looked at ECHSPORTS.COM it referenced there football team as:"lettermen returning/lost as 65/50'". What is the criteria for lettering? I really don't know!! The question is how many of these players saw significant playing time and were any of them 2's and 3's on the depth chart ? How many of these players and new additions to the team will accept the challenge of improving on a 1 and 9 record. How many of those 65,along with the freshmen prospects will report for the first day of camp? I don't know. We will have to what and see.

ECHSPORTS.COM also cited that on the offensive side of the ball that they had 6 starters returning and defensively they have 5 starters returning.
How many of these players will lose their spots to 2&3 players or freshmen/transfers?

I guess when you pay big bucks to go to any private liberal arts college in the ODAC and last out the the season on the team-- you can letter. It's kind of like every kid getting a parpicitation trophy for playing "Pop Warner".
Personally I think this should be the case.If you have a player that sees no playing time other than practice and has had contributed to the team...they should recieve some sort of recognition every year.Remember guys D3 has no athletic scholarships( no I'm not that naive)and most of these guys are playing for the love of the game----------even down to the scrubs on the practice teams!

Looks like Jermaine is off to another positive start!

exerpt from Tampa Bay's daily practice blog:

The first real hitting of camp came after the individual-position drills were finished on Sunday morning. The next drill was a variation on the ageless "Oklahoma Drill," a period the Bucs call "Half-Line Blitz." Each snap pitted three offensive linemen, the quarterback and one or two skill position players against two defensive linemen, a linebacker and a safety. The yardage result of the play wasn't important – the QB usually ended up just lobbing a pass to a jogging back – because the purpose of the drill was to see how the offense could pick up blitzes now that the pads are on and the players are hitting. First-year LB Jermaine Taylor stood out during this session with several intense blitzes around the right end of the line.

Keep up the pressure and stay healthy Jermaine! ;) The BC faithful are watching.

Later entry on the blog.  I know he feels he can't miss a snap....

LB Jermaine Taylor, who had a tough bout with cramps near the end of Sunday's morning practice, recovered quickly and was able to participate fully in the afternoon follow-up. The Bucs actually lost no one from the morning to the evening sessions, meaning they had a full complement of players practicing, besides those (Joey Galloway, Kenyatta Walker) who were being held out as part of a designed schedule.

Yeah I remember Mr Colbert saying Jermaine always had cramps while at BC. A typical problem when you have close to 0% bodyfat during a heatwave.

fyi, former BC OC Bob Colbert had successful double knee replacement surgery Friday morning. He is in good health and recovering in St. Margaret's Hospital just outside Pittsburgh. He should be released on Tuesday to the loving care of his wife Momma Colbert in Latrobe. If you would like to pass along well wishes (or sympathies to Momma Colbert), email me at bcc28@cornell.edu and I will pass a message along. Thanks

2006 ODAC Preseason Football Poll - released today by the ODAC

1 - Bridgewater
2 - Washington & Lee
3 - Hampden-Sydney
4 - Guilford
5 - Randolph-Macon
6t - Catholic
6t - Emory & Henry

There are several ways the ODAC voting could have gone to yield the preseason point totals (E&H and CUA could be reversed, for example), but here is a spreadsheet I did of one reasonable possibility:

Team   1   2   3   4   5   6   7   Pts

BC   7   0   0   0   0   0   0   49
W&L   0   5   2   0   0   0   0   40
HSC   0   2   2   2   1   0   0   33
GC   0   0   3   2   2   0   0   29
RMC   0   0   0   3   3   1   0   23
CUA   0   0   0   0   1   2   4   11
E&H   0   0   0   0   0   4   3   11

Little did I know when I left work Thursday afternoon the maelstrom I'd be creating.  As far as my identity, I'm a fan.  I have played in the past, thus my comment on watching film.  That comment was based on my observation of last year's game.  Obviously y'all know that I don't agree with the preseason poll, but the only way for the Wasps to prove that wrong is to perform on the field.  We can sit here and talk all day long, but it'll all be proven on the field shortly enough.  Interesting to note that my preseason outlook differs from the one posted today on ehcsports.com.  I don't know why Gagliano isn't listed and I'd also like to apologize to Little Guy Haslam for misspelling his name.  It also appears that Emory has lost Zach Weber, Brandon Davis, and longtime coach Thomas Nelson.  Who knows what's going on at Exit 26, but its also interesting to note that Jay Murphy has been added to the staff.  Murphy just graduated in May, so it'll be interesting to see how the team responds to that.  Other than that, I still predict Dandy Don to make Wasps into a contender.  Don't count them out.  If not, I'll happily eat crow, or at the very least some Bridgewater Turkey.
