:D  Thanks!  I hope you all have a good time at the game!  Ferrum always brings back memories of their football recruiter coming into my high school and trying to sell the school based on the fact that they have "water gun" fights the first few weeks of school.  Sounds like a wild and crazy place....  :o

Actually, Ferrum used to be out of control when it was a junior college.  I know several alumni who spent two years feeling no pain there. . . .
All kidding aside, Ferrum's start as a Junior College had a very noble purpose.  It's mission was to provide an education for poor kids, especially from rural and mountainous areas of southwestern Virginia, that might otherwise be unable to attend college.  If you attended FC, I think you were expected to do a lot of the work for the college - janitorial, kitchen, laundry, farming, groundskeeping, maintenance, etc. - to help pay your way.  This was especially important during the depression years of the 1930's.  One of my mom's sisters, now 87, attended Ferrum for two years from 1936-38.  She got a scholarship because she was valedictorian of now-defunct Red Bank School in Patrick County, VA.  I think there were eight graduates in 1936.  lol  Now, back to Jacketlawyer's point, I've also heard some of the drinking stories (and other stuff?) from the 1960's-1980's.  The Ferrum legend lives!  :)

That's a pretty neat story, Hasanova.  As always, thanks for sharing it--I've come to enjoy them.

Ferrum is a Methodist college, like Randolph-Macon, Emory & Henry, and the soon-to-be-coed, Randolph-Macon Women's College.  Its mission was indeed to offer a college education in an area where there wasn't an opportunity for such.

Of course, it also offers an opportunity to be shot.  My first cousin went there back in the mid-80s, and accidently stumbled across a still in the woods not far from campus.  He dropped everything and ran, but that still didn't keep the deer rifle from going off at him.  He never went back in the woods again. ;D

As a West region type (SJU) stranded in the South (at least by NCAA D3 geography), I have a rare non-kid-coaching Saturday tomorrow and was thinking of taking in McDaniel at Catholic.

I know it's been several years since these teams contended in  their leagues but is there anything compelling that will get me off the fence to make that 15-minute trip to DuFour? Thanks

Yeah doesn't look like there is much else to do a Ferrum other than go outside and do stupid stuff. That place is absolutely in the middle of no  where
Yeah, the night life in Ferrum is a "little" limited.  I bet there are still some stills in the woods, though.  I guess you can always drive over to Floyd, Woolwine or Dugwell to see what's going on.  lol  Hey, I'm from Claudville, so I'm entitled to joke about it!  :)

Trenches

Hasa, quakes75, and the GC/AU contigent,
Looks like I may be able to get up to game tomorrow.  ;D  Sorry everyone else, I don't think I will be able to give updates (should anything change, i'll be right by the computer).  I'd like to be able to get some pics from the game but not sure If I'll get my camera working by tomorrow. If I do, I'll post some. Anyway, good luck to GC and the rest of the ODAC this weekend.

Cool!  Email me if you want and let me know how to find you - camera on the sideline maybe? lol   I'll look for you and hope to say hello.

I like the sound of this:

From the DNR:
QuoteNOTES: Eagles tailback Winston Young will dress for Saturday's game against Ferrum, but will not start, according to Clark. Young is still recovering from a rib injury sustained in BC's season-opening win over McDaniel.

Sounds like the ribs are starting to heal up just in time for the ODAC games..

Thanks, jacketlawyer.  Looks as though your cousin and I have had similar still experiences.  I lived to tell my story, too!  My late maternal grandfather used to be a part-time revenuer in Patrick County.  He died before I was born, so I never got to meet him, but I found his revenuer badge and asked my grandmother how much he got paid for that job.  She said his only compensation was "he got to keep the (confiscated) sugar!"  lol  Man, times are different now!

CUA has a good QB and has had a very profilic passing game.  They seem to be running a little more this year, but the youngest of the three QB Ricca brothers can still "air it out" as well.  His older brothers set a lot of records at Catholic and Hampden-Sydney.

As far as the McDaniel - Catholic game, I don't know any reasons to see McDaniel right now. Brad Baer is a quality QB, but he doesn't have the weapons around him right now.
Catholic appears to be an up and coming team. Keith Ricca is a good young quarterback, but is adjusting to a new offense. As Catholic continues on this year, I expect their offensive numbers to get better. Nick Olivero is also an exciting player to keep your eye on. He is a starting corner for Catholic and has 2 picks in 2 games. He also is getting some PT at RB, and has looked good there so far. Both of those players are sophomores, and since Catholic only has 3 seniors, you might be able to watch a team this weekend a year or two before they really break out.

Eh-You

I clearly said GC would look like a JV team compared to MU and Wesley - not compared to AU. Averett looked like a JV compared to them also. I think it should be a good game. But whoever said V-bach would throw for 300 plus - I would think most QB's would if they threw it 60 + times a game! Don't worry - Saturday afternoon this conversation will be over with only one winner -
Clarification : GC is not a JV team and I'm saying it will be a blowout but AU wins!
To all newbies - don't run your mouth until the team you're pulling for wins the big game. (please refer to Eh-You's karma for more details)

Maybe there's a twinge of doubt in Eh's head.. I think GC will pull this one out!  In fact I hope they make AU look like a JV team and blows them out by 20.

Yeah does anyone feel a gnat in the room. I hope the ODAC goes undefeated against the USAC this year. That would silence alot of those people. Trenches I will probally call you some point on sat. so if you get a new number in your phone then its me.

Back to the Ferrum thing I almost went to that school but I couldn't do it because the big night life was to go to the Walmart in the next town over.
