I just noticed that the ODAC has the following mascots:
Wasps
Hornets
Yellow Jackets

You sure have the flying/stinging insect mascots covered!   ;D

You know it's posts like this one that make me realize that MUC and it's fans are amongst the worst in D3!  :D ;)   Yeah.. we've got the bugs and flying creatures covered...but it's not often you have a scary arse Quaker in the mix!

Good Luck to all of the ODAC teams this weekend!   Stay healthy and thank God the REAL season is starting with conference games being played this weekend!

Hasa..you are as right as an acorn...Mary Baldwin are the squirrels...Hollins goes nameless...less we get that cute "Honey Bees" name adopted...
Thanks.  I was pretty sure Jacketlawyer had Hollins confused with Mary Baldwin.  Like I said, I know a few MBC alumnae and they wear that "Squirrel Girl" moniker with pride. :)  Now, back to Hollins, I think "Honey Bees" has a nice alliterative ring to it, but it may earn some stinging criticism from the ladies at HU!

"Scary arse Quakers."  I like it.  Everyone always said Elon's nickname before they became the Phoenix (Fightin' Christians) was an oxymoron.  I've seen televised coverage of the Southern Baptist Convention, so I beg to differ.  The only thing scary or oxymoronic about being a Quaker is realizing Richard Nixon went to Whittier, which is a DIII Quaker college in southern California.  But hey, they're the Fightin' Poets and that does strike terror!  Face it, the ODAC board just rules.  lol

My thoughts on the season so far, for what it's worth:

- Our running game is very again.  Carter is very good, it's going to be hard to keep him off the field.  Highfill adds a running dimension from the qb position we haven't had since Lutz.  We should run more option.......

- Copeland is an excellent WR.  I wouldn't trade him for anybody I've seen in the ODAC the past few years, regardless of how many catches those other guys get in their Tecmo-bowl offense.

- I think both lines have looked good and deep.

- Our defense plays harder than it did last year.  However, I'll reserve judgement until we play an offense that can pass the ball.  I think our defensive coaching is a weak point, which showed once again last week as we were totally unprepared to stop the option.  The talent is there......

- I think Soltis has done ok overall, but needs to open it up more and use what he's got.  IE:  Ferrum couldn't cover our WR's, but we mysteriously stopped passing for pretty much the entire 2nd and 3rd qtr. last Saturday.  We never did get them out of their 8-in-the-box.  With our atheletes, that should never happen.

- As far as the rest of the ODAC, I'm suprised to see HSC at 0-2.  To me, Guilford is still Guilford until they prove otherwise.  They have a nice quarterback but I don't seem them as being tough enough, experienced enough, or balanced enough to compete with us in a big-game setting.  Of course, there was a gime when the same could have been said about bridgewater.  I agree with kid that, for now, W&L still shapes up to be our toughest test.  I will be interested to see how the Guilford-HSC game unfolds this weekend.  Emory, RMC, and CUA all look to be non-factors again.

I stand corrected! ;D

Yes, but the OAC has:
BWU: Whose unis look like something I saw in a toilette once (Same with Rowan...)
JCU:  Brown (I mean Blue) Streaks
Muskingum "Fighting Fish"  (Muskies)
Heidelberg "Student Princes"  (Makes you really shake in your boots when playing the Princes)
MUC:  "Purple" Raiders  (Raiders is ok, but put the Purple on there and I have to admit sounds kind of fruity)

And yes we have the Wilmington QUAKERS also, but based on their record the past ...years, I wouldn't say that they are "Scary Arse"!!  Good Luck to the WASPS this weekend!  Make it two in a row!!

Now pardon me, I have to go take a BW.

It's R-MC/CUA week.

Damn man, this used to be a huge game.

At least it's always entertaining.

Just a has been stopping in to reminisce and pull for the Jackets this week.

Carry on with your meaningful conversations ...

It's Catholic's longest-standing every-year rivalry now, starting in 1987. Twenty years in a row.

But I would dispute the assertion that 1993 was entertaining. :)

Go Catholic! Beat the hell out of the Jackets. Is there even anybody left at Catholic anymore who even knows that this is a rivalry? Probably only Bob Larson and John Ricca.

I had no idea there was rivalry there at all, but I was graduating the year it first started.

That's pretty cool.  What's the deal with that 1993 game, and (ahem) who leads the series?

Knew I got on these boards for a pretty good reason.  I actually pick a few things now and then! :)

Macon leads 14-12-1. Catholic got stomped 34-6 in 1993 en route to a 1-9 season. The one tie is the highest-scoring tie in Division III history, perhaps NCAA history, not sure, at 50-50 in 1995. Overtime came in the following year.

I DO remember that 50-50 tie game.  Thanks a whole lot, Pat!

I'm not sure how much of a true rivalry it is, but the games have pretty much always been competitive, regardless of the relative success of the two teams. Catholic's scores:

1987: 19     Randolph-Macon     14
1988: 7     Randolph-Macon     14
1989: 19     Randolph-Macon     11
1990: 15     Randolph-Macon     20
1991: 10     Randolph-Macon     7
1992: 30     Randolph-Macon     14
1993: 6     Randolph-Macon     34
1994: 25     Randolph-Macon     18
1995: 50     Randolph-Macon     50
1996: 28     Randolph-Macon     30
1997: 34     Randolph-Macon     21
1998: 22     Randolph-Macon     12
1999: 35     Randolph-Macon     26
2000: 28     Randolph-Macon     31
2001: 20     Randolph-Macon     24
2002: 18     Randolph-Macon     26
2003: 31     Randolph-Macon     14
2004: 13     Randolph-Macon     16
2005: 28     Randolph-Macon     24

Two games were also played in the 1910s and four in the late '40s and early '50s,

[...]

I honestly think Higgison is doing a heck of a job.  Look at what McDaniel's Baer (QB) and Shenandoah's Lacey (RB) -- their team's biggest threats -- did to us last year:

Baer - 12 carries, 92 yards (7.7 yds/per) ... 16-for-28 passing, 180 yards, 1 TD
Lacey - 12 carries, 110 yards (9.2 yds/per), 1 TD

Look what they did to us this year:

Baer - 14 carries, 70 yards (5.0 yds/per) ... 7-for-17 passing, 73 yards
Lacey - 12 carries, -3 yards (-0.2 yds/per)

I think he's done a fine job against the run.  Ferrum just did a heck of a job with blocking and you have to give it to their quarterback.  Pitts has been running like that (albeit not that much) his whole career:

As a junior: 103 carries, 849 yards (8.2 avg), 9 TDs
As a sophomore: 88 carries, 483 yards (5.5 avg), 3 TDs
As a freshman: 75 carries, 392 yards (5.2 avg), 2 TDs

Whatelse would you have done different against Pitts and Ferrum?  Our gameplan was to force him to give it up.  We did that, he just didn't listen. :)

those RBs are real good for d3 standards. as for the QB and running dimension, don't forget wakefield. Lutz was a tough SOB and created a lot of his own yards, but wakefield had great speed for a QB and was someone that could bust a run of 40+ yds at any moment
as for soltis, i think he's done a fantastic job. 33pts a game is no gimme, even at bridgewater. 248 yds/game on the ground is pretty damn good as well. ball control offenses are your best defenses. and when your defense is giving up 9pts a game, that is a great recipe for success. i do believe the eagles are 3-0 going into this weekend, are they not?
sometimes the BC faithful needs to step back and realize what they have going before they start asking for more...

Maybe we should be the Old Dominion Apiary Conference.  Hollins has no nickname, so there's room for one more.  May I suggest the Honey Bees?

Hasa, I believe Hollins is the Squirrels.

Mary Baldwin's teadms are the Squirrels.
