We are entering the ODAC portion of the schedule, and I have a question for those who have seen the various teams play and who-more importantly-have a handle on the playoff selection process.

My question is this-do you see anyone in the ODAC who has a realistic chance to make the NCAA playoffs with a loss, or will this be another "must get the automatic bid to qualify" year for the conference?

The only way I see 2 ODAC teams getting in is if someone other than BC gets the ODAC automatic bid. In this senerio if BC has only one loss they would likely get a Pool C bid with a 9-1 record, thus allowing 2 ODAC teams into the playoffs. With W&L already with a loss and HSC & Guilford with two, their only way in is to win the ODAC. ;)

Short, sweet, and to the point...

Thank you, Llama...you are the wind beneath my wings!

OK, llamaguy, you are my hero, but, with apologies to Bette Midler, I can't go so far as "you are the wind beneath my wings."  Sorry.  lol  I also agree with your assessment of the playoff scenario - unless you win the ODAC title I don't see how you can get a bid with two losses.  Hampden-Sydney's 2005 team was a good example of that situation.

Comparing this to the OAC in 2005:
Mount Union:  9-1   Playoff Bid as Conference Champion
Capital:  7-2  Lost to Otterbein and MUC but beat ONU  -  Pool C Bid
ONU:  7-2  Beat MUC, but lost to Capital and JCU  -  No Playoffs.
National Champions - 13: 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2017

I think two losses by an OAC team are viewed more favorably than two losses by an ODAC team.  Right now, the OAC is seen (rightfully, in my opinion) by the selection committee as the stronger conference top to bottom.

It would be interesting to see how the OAC would do if they had more than just one weekend of non conference games. I think its kind of hard to compare different  conferences just by looking at their out of conference records. What I think it can tell us is how good a conference is year to year. Comparing 2005-2006's out of conference record for the ODAC definitely shows that the teams are much better than last year.

Oh yeah, definitely.  Shoot, there are so many factors you would need to include when comparing conference's out-of-conference records.  Not the least of which is WHO they play.

Two things -- the OAC record can't be 7-4 -- there are 10 teams and they each have one non-conference game. And the NEFC record isn't really 16-19 since they play most of their "non-conference" games against teams from their opposite division.

Also take a win and a loss away from the NCAC -- Hiram and Allegheny played each other in a non-conference game.

The OAC is 7-3 in out of conference games:
Capital beat Wittenberg
Mount Union beat Averett
Ohio Northern beat Milikin
Baldwin Wallace beat Augustana
Marietta beat Emory & Henry
Otterbein beat Defiance
John Carroll lost to Wooster
Muskingum beat Bethany
Heidelberg lost to Oberlin
Wilmington lost to Mt. Saint Joseph

Yikes ... then that kills my point that the ODAC is doing well this year, comparably speaking. ::)

Well, still doing well, but not sixth-best.

Monday on Hampden-Sydney week and we're discussing the OAC non-conference records............what the crap >:(

So what's it gonna be?  Are we going to get a "guilty pleasure" homecoming blowout in a HSC down year?  Could the lack of hype around this year's game be a dangerous trap for BC?  Most importantly, is there still internet service in Farmville????  Talk about fair weather fans.............

Matt Barnhart (kid)

Llamaguy and I were discussing the HSC-BC game on the South Region Fan Poll thread.

But it's not fun talking to eachother about it ... where are the HSC fans?!  I actually miss them. :'(

Miz,

Here is a little ditty for ya. All the talk is on the South Region Fan Poll board. Although its all BC talk. ;D

These are the five most interesting south region games to me...

Hampden-Sydney at No. 3 Bridgewater (Va.) - Well, (a) I'm a BC fan, (b) it's Homecoming and (c) the Tigers beat Guilford last week. Bridgewater's 35-game ODAC winning streak will be in serious jeopardy. Entry by "Kid"

You don't have to tip, toe around the HSC posters Kid. Even after a win over Guilford, they won't actually be back on this board unless they BEAT Bridgewater! I see this game going more like the 2004 game at home against BC. Remember a certain QB with knowledge firsthand told you about BC's speed. A pair of freshman QB's will see that on Saturday, not to mention BC is still treating this like Championship week.  They will just have to bring those rings out a couple of times in the ODAC schedule this year! What H-SC posters?

The Tigers have gotten better each game this season with their balance on offense.  They've become more lethal each game with the run, racking up 343 yards on the ground versus Guilford.  Those are Ferrum-type numbers.  One of their biggest weapons is one of their QBs who averages 7.1 yards per carry (a la Pitts of Ferrum) and their best offense weapon is their running back who is gaining 6.0 yards a rush (a la Whitehead of Ferrum).  What Sydney has that Ferrum doesn't is a QB who can throw too ... with their other QB completing 60% of his passes for 200 yards a game (and WR Drew Smith on the outside).

What I do think is odd is that their defense only has three sacks on the year, and has only forced four turnovers.  With that kind of play, they really will have to outscore the opponent's offense to win (like they did Guilford).

So I certainly think there are reasons to be concerned about this coming weekend's opponent.  Keep in mind that last season, it was a tie ballgame with a minute left in the game ... in 2004 we were only up by two heading into the fourth quarter ... and in 2003, we down by four with under a minute to play.  We won all three, sure, but they haven't been easy.
