As someone who played Oline my entire football career I've always felt the long run reflects better on how well the line blocked and as such it was more exciting to me and still is to see a long run..I'm not trying to be an anti-pass-ite but passing just isn't as fun!  ;)

Wrightman,

I didn't know you were an olineman.  From your perspective, a long run is something you take pride in, just like blocking for a 1000 yard running back.  To fans who were not olinemen, I don't think it matters.  A sixty-yard run and a sixty-yard pass are both beautiful things to see.  I hope Bridgewater has several of each on Saturday, although I won't be able to see any of them.   :(

FWIW, I think the oline should take credit for pass protection on the 60 yard pass, also.  :)

After I posted this the first time, I noticed your avatar of Captain Obvious.  At first glance, I thought the "0" was for Hampden-Sydney's score this coming Saturday.  My second glance picked up on the polyester material of the shirt, and I knew he couldn't possibly be from HS-C wearing polyester!  Ewww!

GO BC!

By the way.. if the Guilford O-line can pass block.. why can't they run block?   ???
That's a darn good question, but you better direct that to Coach Kiesel.  lol

Does anybody (CBE?) have an update on Mr. Taylor's Motown Adventure?

I read he was supposed to meet with Lions' coaches yesterday.  Did it happen?  How did it go?

We are still with ya, JT!

No update yet.  I expect to hear from him in a day or two.  You'll know when I know!

In other former DIII player news...Brett Elliott (Linfield) was released from San Diego's practice squard today.  They signed him to the PS early this month.

Maybe not, but he's pretty easy to contact if you want to try it.  lol  Kiesel was a lineman at Gettysburg College, so I'm sure he watches that aspect of the game pretty closely.  One o'clock Saturday cannot get here soon enough!  :)

If you have a crappy O-Line, I would argue it is much easier to roll your quarterback out with slide protection than it is to man up and and drive people off the ball. The risk is higher with a passing offense, but there is obviously more to gain if you can't run block well.

interesting take by the quaker fan in around the region. in essence, "i'd rather pass and lose than run and win"... that's one of those things you read over and over and each time you finish you look confused and say "HUH?!"

granted i get the point that guilford football is "fun" finally. but still... HUH?!

Isn't that from Pat Cummings column last week?

"The best response came from long-time Quakers fan Danny Chilton. While a bit long, I found it entertaining and worth the space.

.... Do the Quakers want to win? If someone says run more, I'll pass. I say this is, win or lose, more fun!

Woody Hayes always said three things can happen when you pass -- and two of them are bad. Until he inexcusably punched a Clemson defender, he was always a winner, but his brand of Buckeye football left me cold. Maybe the three yards and a cloud of dust obscured my vision for seeing how beautiful a football spiraling through the air can be.

WLU78 - I am the author of the piece Pat Cummings included in ATR.  It was written in haste late at night, so it might not have been proofread as carefully by me as it should have been.  I thought he might use a line here and there, so I was unprepared and flattered when he included the whole piece.  At any rate, I thank him.

In an earlier post by a fan, I think some things were put in quotation marks that were not actually said AND I think I failed to put the word "SURE!" after I posed the question "Do we want to win?"  In a nutshell, I think the Quakers - or any other team for that matter - should use their best assets to try and win.  If we had a running game, we should use it!  Since we don't, pass it!  Would I rather win by running than lose by passing?  OF COURSE!  I know that is the message I was trying to convey and, obviously, failed with some readers.  If, however, you lose no matter what strategy you use, I'd rather lose with a prolific passing attack than lose with an anemic running game.  For now, with the assets they have, I think Guilford's best chance for victory is by passing a lot.  If the Quakers can find a consistent running game, then, of course, they should even it up a bit.  That makes great football sense and can only put more pressure on opposing defenses.   Peace

'nova,

I completely agree with you. When you can throw it a little bit, you always feel like you've got a punchers chance at any team.  And their short passing attack is, in a since, a ball control offense.
Guilford's offense, however, hass not been the story over the last two weeks. It's been their stinky defense that needs to be addressed.

Hug - Thanks.  I also agree with your points.  Let's face it, you normally go better than 2-2 when you put up 153 points in 4 games.  As I said earlier, the HSC game was the 3rd loss in the last 14 games (11 actually) where the Quakers put up 43 points or more!  With a normal defense (plus fair special teams coverage), 43 will win for you, say, 98% of the time!  We've got to get better!

Nova-

I hope you have your cans to get in to the game.  Last year was the only year in the Souper Bowl that guilford beat us in the can drive.  They made it a competition among the groups on campus. So we are going to get that trophy back, plus take the Souper Bowl ;D

I was reading this board about the o-line bit.  Well because I was tall, and quick(not because I was big). Should have been a WR, but they needed lineman.  9th grade was my first year playing football.  So I took the spot. I played JV as an o-line men. I wasn't strong and weighed about 140 then.  I learned to be tough, becuase I did practice with people 250+. (not to mention I was the back up nose that first year behind someone that had 200lbs on me) I started at LG after one year, (my twin was RG, and we invented a blocking scheme that kept us of the lineman and on the linebackers)  That year we had two 900 yard rushers.  If I could weigh 280+ and bench a cow.  I would play o-line again. Miss those days.

Point is guilford probably doesn't practice the run that much.  I think they are going to need it Saturday.  I could take out lineman on the run when I needed too.  But when It came to the pass I got beat bad.  (We ran the wishbone.)
