Thanks.  The Guilford president since 2002, Kent Chabotar, has made a big push to beautify the campus and it's working.  He came from NESCAC member Bowdoin and I think he has a vision to capture some of the aesthetic feel of those campuses.  I like the brick sidewalks also.  They haven't been installed everywhere on campus so far, but they work on it steadily and every time I visit I see another section completed.  If you get a chance to walk through the quad, there is a long sidewalk going east to west across the center (it has an "S" curve around some trees) that has personalized bricks bought by alumni and friends to help pay for the project.  Mine was put in about a month ago.  :)

Yeah the brick paths look much nicer than the black asphalt paths that run through the grass on the BC mall.   The GC looks great.. it may soon rival that of W&L!  ;)

Hasa. Nice pics. look like college football. Thanks
LLama-nice compliation of quotes. It was funny.

Brain says (it is less capable than most) BC by 8.5 in a 80 point game. Because my kid is alumni I say GC by 2.5 in OT.

I guess LLama was correct. This will be the game

I'm really glad GC is looking better, but we have a lot to do to catch some of the other ODAC schools.  W&L, for one, still has much deeper pockets than Guilford!  :)  I think President Chabotar is on the right track, the appearance of the campus has a big impact on alumni giving, number (and quality) of applicants and retention levels.  With 340 mostly wooded acres, Guilford has the opportunity to be an even more beautful place even though the city of Greensboro has completely surrounded the campus over the past 40 years.

Dear lord 340 acres of unused land?   :o  Talk about not needing extra space if a practice field is needed!  :D

Well, the total campus is 340 acres, but I'd say 60-70 acres are currently developed.  There are some plans for expansion (including practice fields) that will be on the north side.  Trust me, if Guilford had wanted to sell this land for residential or commercial development, they would have gotten a lot of money.  I think most students and alumni would scream pretty loudly if they did, however.  It's definitely a buffer (and a quiet refuge) on the north and east sides of the campus.  The west and south sides are bounded by some pretty busy roads and commercial properties.

You mean you all don't have trucks of chickens driving through campus on a daily basis?!?!  :D

No, sadly, we don't.  We must have sinned and are being punished.  There is a Chick-Fil-A across the street, though, so I guess we just get them a couple of hundred miles down the road after you see them drive by.  :)

Oh yeah and you all miss the stink too!  Needless to say those damn chickens ruined a date I had in college.. I was driving down 81 and I opened the vents in my Jeep (my Jeep lacks A/C and just about everything else)  and my date was instantly covered head to toe in chicken feathers.. in her mouth.. every where.. it was pretty hard to explain to a JMU girl why that happened.. but it gave me a good laugh on the drive back to BC after I dropped her prissy butt off!  :D

Jopson Upgrades

Thanks to a sizable donation. Bridgewater College plans to expand Jopson field.
The first priority for BC athletic director Curt Kendall is to improve the dilapidated press box at the stadium. Because of its small size, coaches from both teams are forced to call plays from on top of the press box, which can make things interesting if inclement weather hits.
"Obviously, we need to enhance the press box," Kendall said Monday. "We have to get the coaches out from the weather.  And we don't want to get the media all crunched up in there."
Another plan in the works is to enhance the seating at Jopson.  Kendall said the school is looking into adding chair-back seats - the stadium has only bench seating now - which would be available to fans for an additional donation.
"It would be the kind of seats you could get for the entire season," Kendall added. "Probably be around $200-300."
Kendall would not disclose the amount of the donation,  but did say plans could get under way by next season.
One thing he wouldn't mind is a press box like the one at Mount Union (Ohio), which is considered to be one of the finest in Division III.
"That was the cream of the crop," Kendall said.

Pat Coleman

That's a great press box. Of course, MUC also has several sports information staffers capable of helping manage that facility, whereas Bridgewater only has Stephen Cox.

Thanks for the GREAT info Hug!  I wish they would look into improving the scoreboard/sound system over the seats.. how many times has the sound cut off during the national anthem?  :-\

I guess they feel like the seats will pay for themselves over time.  I'm hoping there is a public restroom somewhere in the plans.

What's wrong with running into the basement of Flory!  ;)

I'm telling you ... a toilet is a toilet is a toilet. :)

(1) press box ... (2) chair backs ... (3) sound system ... (4) scoreboard ...

...
...
...
... then (5) concessions and restrooms.
