It's going to be awfully tough for Bridgewater and/or Emory & Henry to beat Washington & Lee.  Since the F&M loss to begin the season, their numbers have been staggering...

  • W&L has held opponents to 6.8 ppg, and a combined 13 points in the first half
  • Their defense has forced 20 turnovers while their offense has committed only 4
  • They've scored at least three TDs in every game
  • Jack Martin (WR) has four TDs in the last two games for an average of 35.5 yards per reception
  • Their freshman QB has completed 63% of his passes

When you have that kind of defense, consistency and big play ability ... you deserve being conference champions.

Bmore BC

It appears to me that BC has lost its "invinceability" within the conference. When BC was making its undefeated run the previous 6 years, you could always sense that the opponent had some doubt in their mind that they could defeat BC. Now that the doubt is gone and teams know they can beat BC, I think the conference will be more competitive. Sort of like how FSU controlled the ACC and no one could beat them. Once UVA defeated FSU teams started believeing that they could actually win. Just my thoughts.

Also, anyone else notice in that article before the BC/GU game how the o-line said they more worry about where they are going to eat then the opponent or something like that. And they do not like being yelled at. Statements like that kind of make me wonder. Maybe they need to refocus a little bit. Not blaming the o-line, but maybe they need a good lashing.

Snakehandler

It appears to me that BC gifted a win to the Wasps Saturday. As Herm Edwards stated one time, "You play to Win the Game!" BC's offense did not play to win the game.

BC can beat W&L, but two things have to happen
1) Execute the play that is called
2) Have a little imagination on offense

I've looked at it and there is no way for Hampden-Sydney or Catholic to win a tie-breaker against W&L for the NCAA bid.  Neither team wins a 2-way head-to-head.  There are scenarios of 3 or 4 teams tied with a 4-2 record at the end of the season that take the tie-breaking sequence to a second or third tie-breaker, but neither Hampden-Sydney or Catholic is able to win any of the tie-breakers against W&L.

Ultimately, if the tie-breaking goes all the way to the so-called Rose Bowl rule, which awards the AQ to the team who has not appeared in the NCAA Division III playoffs most recently, the advantage goes to the Generals:

W&L - has never gone to D3 playoffs
Guilford - has never gone to D3 playoffs
HSC - last went in 1977
RMC - last went in 1984
Catholic - last went in 1999
E&H - last went in 2000
Bridgewater - has gone the last 6 years

This is the scenario for Guilford to go to the NCAAs:

October 28, 2006
Catholic @ Emory & Henry
Guilford @ Randolph Macon
Washington & Lee @ Bridgewater

November 4, 2006
Bridgewater @ Randolph Macon
Catholic @ Guilford
Emory & Henry @ Washington & Lee

November 11, 2006
Bridgewater @ Catholic
Guilford @ Emory & Henry
Randolph Macon @ Hampden-Sydney

This is what the ODAC standings would look like at season's end:

1. GC (4-2) ... 2-1 in the 4-way head-to-head tie-breaker
    EHC (4-2) ... 2-1 in the 4-way head-to-head tie-breaker
    BC (4-2) ... 1-2 in the 4-way head-to-head tie-breaker
    WLU (4-2) ... 1-2 in the 4-way head-to-head tie-breaker
5. H-SC (3-3)
6. CUA (1-5)
7. R-MC (1-5)

EHC and GC would still be tied with a 2-1 record in the 4-way head-to-head tie-breaker and Guilford would go to the NCAAs based upon their win over Emory & Henry.

Unlikely, but still possible ....

McMillan's article of October 11, 2000, about the ODAC and tie-breakers, is definitely worth a read again this season:

I always felt Guilford (8-2, 4-1) got a bad deal in 1997.  Thanks for reminding me the Quakers would have gone to the playoffs if the ODAC had an AQ tie-breaker that season!  lol

I remember the 2000 and 1997 seasons very well.  It was fun being good!!

Casper, I really can't go into what I really thought about the game, cause all who read this board will think bad of me. (except miz, who still believes in free speech)
Let's just say we sucked it up. The team who played to win, won. The team who played to lose, lost.
Yeah, it was a gift that the Wasps were willing to accept. In my eyes there was no Herculian effort there by E&H. We sucked.

I don't think holding BC to 6 punts, 100 yards in the second half....most of which probably came against a prevent D......is a gift.

Two mistakes by us in the second quarter spotted you guys 14 other points.

Sounds to me like we "took"....

casper,

No excuses from me.  E&H beat us up front, didn't allow us to make any holes or give us time to throw.  No fault of anyone on Bridgewater's end ... the Wasps were just better that day.

Out of the 3 possibilities that have been posted, i see this one as most likely. The biggest "stretch" I see here is E&H over W&L. But after their (E&H) game last week, I won't sit lightly on them anymore. I will say this.. I have never been a bigger fan of BC and E&H, then I will be in the next two weeks. ;D ;D ;D

Understood Kid......that was the only semi-snide comment I've seen from BC faithful.

All have been classy.......and I think I get Snake's point....I'd probably feel the same way.
