For those of you familiar with Guilford County, Eastern Guilford HS has been burning since 2:30 this afternoon.  At this point, the firefighters have given up and are just letting it burn.  Reports say it started in a Chemistry Lab and the teacher was unable to put it out when he discovered it.  He pulled the alarm and, thankfully, no students or faculty were injured, but a few firefighters have been hurt.  The fire is so bad, students and staff were not allowed back at the school to get their cars from the parking lot.  Students are out tomorrow and Friday at least until school administrators decide what to do.  I'm sure some options are doubling up at EG Middle School, GTCC (community college), other area HS's and so forth, but it'll be a big mess since EGHS has over 1000 students.  The news reports say the school is a total loss.  It is, among other things, the alma mater of St. Louis Rams/NCSU alumnus Torry Holt.  This is certainly not as important as the school itself and its academic significance, but I would expect a major disruption in EGHS's athletic schedules as well.  Good luck to all of them!

How awful!!  Thank God nobody was hurt in this terrible fire.  But think of all the disruption in the academic process.  Think of all the teachers' lifetimes of work, notes---it's unimaginable!  replaceable but never the same, never, never, never.

Thanks for the links.  I went and read them, watched the video and saw the pictures on the dnr web page.  I hope the people who need them will use the counsellors suggested.  This is not good.  Keeping them in my toughts and prayers.  After all, I spent 3 years teaching at High Point College(now University) so I'm very familiar with the schools in Guilford and Alamance counties.

Thanks.  That is greatly appreciated.  Since I've gotten to work, I've realized several of my coworkers are directly affected, either as alumni of the school or as parents of current students.   There was no time to save anything, so all books, equipment, personal belongings and so forth were also destroyed.  The Guilford County School Board has some thorny logistical issues and very tough decisions to make today and tomorrow.  As allsky7 added, I'm also very thankful everyone got out in time.

Hasanova,

Wow, what a tragedy. Yes everybody is lucky to be OK. How are the firefighters? We had similar incident in Farmville when Longwood caught fire.

I've got a son whose a senior here in Farmville and I know he'd be crushed if that happened here. Hopefully they can bring in some trailers to serve as temp classrooms.

Please keep us informed if there is anything we can do to help. Our thoughts and prayers are with ya'll.

Hey BCeagle79. I remember that night at Longwood well. After living in the Farmville area most of my life, it was like a punch in the gut. I saw the pics of the actual fire and then the smoldering shell a few days later. Hard to believe that bricks and mortar could evoke such emotion. I no longer live there but get down that way quite often and still get The Farmville Herald. Matter of fact, am headed there today on business. Go FS Falcons and PE Eagles!!

Thanks to everyone for their best wishes to people in the Eastern Guilford HS community.

As far as I can determine from news reports, the firefighters will be OK.  Some relatively minor injuries or smoke inhalation, but nothing life-threatening.  The Guilford County school board and administrators are having emergency meetings now to decide what to do, but the currrent EGHS is essentially a total loss.  The school, like almost all Guilford County schools, was already overcrowded, but they are vowing to keep the student body together and not disperse them piecemeal to every other surrounding school.  Sometimes, however, you have to make hard decisions.  No matter what they do, it's a cinch not everyone will be happy.   As a boost to school spirit, they are trying their best to secure equipment so the football team can still play tomorrow night.

Uncle Jessie

Someone came into the USAC room and brought up the Guilford thing going on.  I ans. his question yesterday over on that site but also wrote this today and thought I should bring it over here as well.
------------------------------------------------------
After reading the many messages over on the ODAC site it looks like the kid from Guilford had something to do with his attendance record in class'. I also see he was not much of a factor in the games he played in. I'm always on the side where I don't think the whole team should be punished because of one person. So I don't believe that GC should forfeit any wins. Esp. because he was not a huge factor in the games played. Like last year when SU decided to forfeit the CUA game it just did not sit right with me. I felt bad for the other 100 + players that followed the rules but because the sports administration did not do the work to check up on the transcripts the whole team was punished. SU even said at the time that they did not look at transcripts until conference play starts. I hope that policy changed.  But with every rule broken as in life when someone commits a crime a punishment needs to follow. Punish the school. Not the team. D3 as we all know has no scholarships so the NCAA cant take away that. But D3 schools do look at the dollars like any D1 college does. So one thing they could do is take away a home game from Guilford for every game the kid played in. I bet that would wake up the schools administration department real fast on checking grades and transcripts.

I watched part of the Guilford/W&L game a couple weeks ago on the live video feed from my office.  It was really choppy and froze numerous times (and I'm on a LAN server).

Hopefully it wasn't just me, because having the ODAC do video streaming of games would be awesome.

It may have been your eyes.

Uncle Jesse,

Just let it go, man.  Shenandoah and Guilford cheated.  It's OK. We will still play each other. Let's move on. Oh, and about the non-factor.....
Exhibit B clearly shows that had said defendant not played, there would have been a glaring disadvantage for the Quakers.
