Hunter Whitfield....that name just oooozes W&L. I wonder if ha came to school with his own butler?  Which leads me to another actual question. Has anyone ever heard of any W&L kid having a hired "assistant" to help them with everyday college life?

Atta Boy! Just like a fine time piece, when everyone else is on snooze, Hug hits the "alarm button" and they all wake up!  ;D ;D ;D

Comments like that rate a 4th Tier ranking!!!  I guess reading the whole article goes beyond your ability.......

....and you guys act suprised when I come on here and make posts referencing US News and World Reports on college rankings.

My fourth tier education taught me to spell pompous.

As Paul Simon put it "I know my lack of education hasn't hurt me none.  I can read the writing on the wall."

W & L - Windbags and Lawyers.  Oh, that's redundant and saying the same thing twice.

I just wanted to jump over to the board and say on the record, that yes, I too miss the whitewater girls and the free liquid beverages.

Hope I don't see you guys next year at the Stagg, because hopefully I'll be coaching in a state championship.  However, I do like the idea that the Stagg Bowl is always a fall back option.  I must be livin' right to say that!
YOU KNOW IT!!!!

Skoal and Rugby,

I just finished posting the BC track and field "Records & History" pages on the new website.  Both of your names show up quite a bit...

http://www.bridgewater.edu/index.php?id=1279

Skoal, your name comes up in four different places in the top records lists, most notably the fourth-best distance in the triple jump - 46'3'' in 1991.

Rugby, your name comes up in 11 different places, most notably the fourth-best time in the 400 meters - 49.47 seconds in 1995.

Skoal does have the distinction of being the "ODAC Outdoor Track Man of the Year" in 1991, as well as being the ODAC long jump champ the same year.  Rugby was the 1996 400-meter champ.

Enjoy!

Something pretty neat happened yesterday when Bridgewater's track team  competed in the Orange & Maroon Classic hosted by Susquehanna University.

Freshman Tony Konate (a cornerback on the football team), in his first collegiate meet, posted the second fastest time in school history in the 55-meters. His time of 6.4 seconds, which won him the event, is only bettered by Davon Cruz's 6.36-second time he posted as a senior in 2002. Konate did beat Jermaine Taylor's best time, also ran when he was a senior (in 2004), of 6.41 seconds. Taylor's time now sits No. 3 all-time.

It's also worth mentioning that Cruz's time of 6.36 is also the ODAC record.  Konate is only off by .04 seconds from a collegiate conference record.  Wow!

Amazing stuff from a freshman in his first meet. Let's hope he continues to get better during the track season, then it translates over onto the football field in the fall.  Having that fast of a guy in the secondary would be nice!

Sadly, there is a story carried in today's Greensboro News and Record and also addressed today by Guilford College on its website that I find very disturbing and disheartening.  As a breaking news story, it is also being run as promos for airing on tonight's 11 o'clock Triad TV news stations.

I don't want to presume guilt or innocence for any of the parties involved, but I will recap what was printed in the paper.  Three members of Guilford's football team, Michael Bates, Michael Robert Six and Chris Barnette, were arrested by Greensboro police yesterday for an alleged incident that occurred in a quad area of a Guilford dorm late Friday night or early Saturday morning.  Court documents released to the N&R indicate that as many as 15 members of the football team may have had some involvement.   The three students who were arrested were all released on bond yesterday and are still enrolled as students pending further investigation.

According to the N&R, the three are accused of assault and battery on three Palestinian students (two attend Guilford and one was a visitor from NC State) by use of "feet, fists and brass knuckles" while calling them "terrorists" and using racial slurs.  The TV news I just watched said Barnette is not accused of using brass knuckles.  Again, quoting the N&R, the court documents said two of the Palestinian students were severely injured and all three were treated at area hospitals.

Obviously, these are shocking and serious charges.  I am, to be blunt, dismayed, angry and quite distressed.  The college is progressing with its own judicial process, which is separate from the city's criminal charges, but is mindful of errors made in other cases such as the one last year at Duke.  I will reserve all judgments until all the facts are presented and everyone involved has their "day in court."

This incident does not reflect the ethical and peaceful standards for which the Society of Friends and Guilford College stand.  I can tell you unequivocably the entire college community is saddened and will act accordingly.  My best wishes to the injured students for a speedy recovery.

Hasa.....I'm very sorry to hear that. I know you are a proud alum and supporter of Guilford College. I know this pains you greatly. Frankly, this could have happened on just about any college campus in the country. I know there is much frustration out there. Last night as I watched President Bush, I had tears in my eyes. As frustrated as I get sometimes with the state of affairs, we still live in the greatest country on earth. Some how, some way, regardless of our individual political points of view, we have got to come together as a nation and make some damn tough decisions to bring about some kind of peace and stability in the Middle East and other parts of the world. This instability has gone on for a long time but the fate of our world probably depends on finding solutions there. Obviously, incidents like this don't help matters.

allsky - it does pain me greatly, so thanks for your empathy.  Any college - and Guilford College in particular - is supposed to be a place of peace, understanding and dialogue, not violence.  I'll wait until I see the final result of this before making other comments, but I am embarrassed and dismayed.  Obviously, there are a lot of heightened emotions right now, but this is not the way Guilford College students are taught to resolves issues.   Peace
