Just because the Sewanee people feel there are sweeping ranges of financial aid doesn't make it so. Perhaps they are not aware that Division III came to a consensus on this and voted in the current system a few years ago.

Let me rephrase this: Do you, in all of your wisdom suspect there might be monkey business with aid to athletes?  Second, is this meeting reported by the Chattanooga paper involve anybody other than Sewanee?  IF so, do you think they might think there is monkey business in the aid to athletes?

I await your response with baited and 1978 vintage breath!! ;D ;)

I do absolutely think there has been improper aid given to athletes, yes. But I think the new system has a chance of working and I wouldn't take my ball and go form a new division based solely on financial aid in 2007.

This has been quite an interesting several week read. *yawn* Same W&L argument, different year.

I have a solution to even the playing field against BC in the non country club sports. If BC can recruit and secure better athletes who are academically inferior, then they should level the playing field for the far superior scholars at W&L. First the ODAC should allow W&L 5 downs for a firstdown in football. Secondly, they should lower the W&L rims to 8 feet on their half of the basketball court. Third and finally, they should allow the baseball team at W&L to bat from the pitcher's mound.           :D :D :D

Atleast that would provide a start to making W&L competitive against Bridgewater in the braun over brain sports!

While you guys are "discussing" which is the best school, perhaps you should wait with "bated" breath to see who wins the the battle of "brawn" versus brains.  Unless, of course, you are fishing or shaving.   :o   I say we play golf in the morning, fire up the grill for lunch and watch ODAC football in the afternoon!  Are you with me?!  :)

Have a karma each for two of my favorite posters.  :)

Ha, no.

I am doing most of my talking on my website's message forum, keeping all you non-BC fans from reading post after post on everything and anything BC football. (you're welcome)

Secondly, I simply can't comment on the issue(s) you have brought up.  I mean come on, what else do you Gennies want?  You have one of the best academic reputations in the nation, you had a national championship team this past season, you beat Bridgewater in basketball and baseball (once each) in 2007, AND you won the conference football title.

I'd say be happy with aforesaid accomplishments. :)

     Llama and other BC folk,

BC struggled in football for many years. As everyone knows, the Eagles have been the dominant team in the ODAC since 2000. What do you attribute their run of success over the last seven years to? Obviously, success breeds success. Otherwise, what's different during this time period versus before 2000?

PrideSportBBallGuy

Where can I find archives on Bridgewater Football?  I need to find a player on the team that lasted one season there.

1. Mike Clark
2. Bob Colbert
3. President Phil Stone
in no particular order.

Committment breeds success. It is being proposed that the admission standards are what has allowed BC to become dominant since 2000 in the ODAC. I contend that it starts with the coaches and administration.

Bridgewater has had many good individual players over the years but a lack of support from the school will doom any program. I can attest when I was at Bridgewater '85-'89 that the Football team was there out of necessity. When the President recognizes that decent sports programs breed alumni contributions and school support, programs flurish as Bridgewater's has since 2000.

Yes Bridgewater's football team has made it to great heights based on it's history. That rise has much more to do with committment to the program, both on the field and in the classroom,  than lowering admission standards to achieve a goal. Academically BC will never compete with W&L but then again I don't think any BC folk have ever let that bother them that much either. I went to BC got my degree as most and have had no problem making a living and contributing to society as a result.

78 knows I was just giving him a hard time as I think he was giving BC the same by playing the admission standard card. All in good banter on a message board.

Oh and for what its worth, I played one of those country club sports at BC my senior year and was neither smart nor good.  :o

I extend my chicken bone! LOL

Interestingly, johnnie_esq found a graph showing that a greater percentage of D3 schools were giving less than the anticipated amount of aid to athletes.

Llama...I concur 100% with you here.  As a player and a coaches son, I was privy to much inside info that most people never knew about. I have seen both sides of this up close and personal. I am of the opinion that (as in most things) it filters down from the top. If the support is not there from above, the best coaching staff in the world is going to be limited in what they can accomplish.
I also agree that most of the banter that takes place on here is in good clean fun. (Picking on W&L and in my case, mostly R-MC) It's kinda like picking on your sister when you were a kid. You love her but boy is it ever fun to push her buttons.  :D
And as for BC's success... in all honesty, after the many years of struggle for the Eagles, I was glad to see them have success. But enough already!!!  It's about time for the Tigers to get over the BC hump.  ;D I anxiously await that day. Probably as much as Jacket & K-Mack want a Macon win over the Tigers. (Remember, picking on your sister  :D)
It is no secret that W&L is at the top of the ODAC totem pole academically. I'm sure there are many degree holders from all ODAC schools making positive contributions to society. Even I, with my degree from Maryville, (the guy who's HS teachers used to talk about his "potential") have managed to pay enough taxes to fund a small country.  :D
     Is it September yet?  8)
