Hey 'Nova,

You are correct about the scoreboard reading 0:00, especially at Jopson Field. ;D

Looking forward to seeing you on Oct 13.  Just keep your QB at home, please.

Well, I know the Eagle faithful think they "owe us one" after last fall, but I'm sure both teams will be up for the game.  I'm certainly hoping to make the trip ... I'd say a 70% chance I'll be there.  As for #16, however, unless something happens that I can't foresee, I think there's a 100% chance he'll be there.  :)

It looks like the ODAC may have another member very soon. As I wrote in the USAC side....
The clock maybe ticking down for the Hornets being in the USAC. President Davis in today's SU school paper wrote in his column that at the next ODAC meeting of school presidents he will make a formal request to join the conference. Many here have thought this would happen. It has been no secret that SU has always wanted to get in the ODAC from day one of the football program. Chances are this will happen. Its just when is the only question.

Any idea why SU didn't get into the ODAC from the get go?

Geographically, the ODAC makes more sense for SU in terms of athletic travel.  It would be a good move for them.

If SU has always wanted to be in the ODAC, then I would guess the ODAC didn't need or want them.

And geography wise, it makes sense for Guilford to be in the USAC, and CNU join the ODAC.  No talk of either of those happening, though.

I have no idea why SU has not joined before or was not able to join in the past. :-\ I have old clippings of when the football program was first re-started and in the Winchester Star it had in big bold letters "FOOTBALLS BACK AT SU;SCHEDULE,BUILDING PLANS, AND ODAC HOPES ARE ANNOUNCED. I'm looking at it now and its from the Oct. 29th 1999 edition. Some interesting things from the article it had Davis saying many ODAC presidents have encouraged him to do this and that he was applying to the conference then. Also it had mentioned that being in the ODAC would give all of SU's teams a true home and have 5 opponents within 2 1/2 hours drive. CNU at the time was 3 1/2 hours away and now we have Maryville in the USAC.

Does anyone know what the Stips are for getting into one confernce or another. If you go based on location, then its a "Cluster ____" For example Ferrum and Averett are right in the middle between Guilford and Bridgewater. Yet Greensboro is next door to Guilford. CNU is in line (up & down Interstate 95) with Methodist and NCWC, but an overnight trip away from Averett, Maryville, Shenandoah and Greensboro as well as Ferrum.

So it's 6 of one and a half dozen of the other as far as travel and location. Has to be something else that drives the conference make up.

It's what schools wish to be associated with each other. And just because those schools are in the same geography and same national association and subdivision now, doesn't mean that was the case when the ODAC and Dixie formed.

Thanks, Pat, for putting the matter succinctly.  As with almost anything else, politics trump convenience and geography.

More newspaper articles about changes in the ODAC (or at least the schedule of one team).  McDaniel wont play Bridgewater after this year.  I thought it was interesting that they (McDaniel) will play St. Vincent instead.  Also brought up the topic of playing CNU again and how the coach at CNU would like to play BC, but Clark isn't thrilled about that prospect.  Goes back to not wanting to play tougher non conference opponents I guess.

After reading that article I belive its pretty clear and just about a done deal that SU will become a member of the ODAC. Thanks Menowannalickee U on giving us the link to that article.

on a side not of things, I had to modify my post because I notice this is my 500 post. WHOO HOO!!  Thanks D3.com for having this web site for us fans to interact with each other.

What are the chances of an exsisting ODAC school adding Football, i.e. Lynchburg? I know there was some talk a while back. How about some of the other schools?

Interesting comments in that article.

Serious question (and I hate to bring up the public v private debate again)...how many public schools have won the Stagg Bowl?

My gut feeling is that at least one ODAC school will add football in the next 3-5 years. Call me crazy....I wouldn't be surprised if Randolph College is one. My source tells me they have some $ issues that must be addressed. This probably is no deep dark secret. It is probably one of the primary reasons they are going coed in the first place. What better way to attract 100 male students/paying customers to a school known as an all girls school. Yes, starting a program is expensive but a football program will increase the schools exposure dramatically. That same exposure would cost big bucks to buy. The old guard won't like it but if you are going to move forward into the coed world, then move forward full steam ahead.
Again, let me reiterate, this is strictly my gut feeling.   ;)

I foresee contention amongst schools with flying, stinging insects as mascots... maybe there could be a Buzz Challenge or Vespidae Clash sort of like the Commander In Chief's Cup between Yellowjackets, Hornets and Wasps.  ::)
