Wow. I knew Bridgewater could put some points on the board against Guilford but I never expected 76. Also, I expected Guilford to score quite a few points of their own.
It just wasn't Vogelbach's day, but the team will regroup and win its share of games down the stretch.
10 was the previous Bridgewater school record for team TD's in a game. Not sure if 76 is a new BC record for points in a game though?

TDizzle21,

You may right.Just let me savor one of the biggest upsets in college football history.

Congratulations to the winners today, especially to the Eagles who played a complete game.  Thanks for the hospitality and great food.  Weather was beautiful and so is your campus.

Arguably, Vogelbach's worst day at QB.  One TD (his 100th) and only 85 yards.  He had 4 picks and his back-up at least one.  I know he had a dislocated shoulder or cracked collarbone, but it was not good.  I was also disappointed in his demeanor after Kiesel tossed him out of the game after they had words.  Don't sit on the end of the bench and sulk - support your teammates to the end.  Watkins, number 14, had a respectable game in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Oh, well.  Thanks again to everyone!  The Quakers can still finish 8-2, but the effort will have to be better than today!  Peace

To drum up some conversation, here are my thoughts on the ODAC...

Randolph-Macon (6-1, 3-0) ... yes, they've won their first three ODAC games, which include W&L and E&H. And lucky for them, four of their conference games are in Ashland. But they have yet to play the three top offenses in the league (GC, BC, H-SC). I wouldn't be shocked if they finished the year 6-4. They' had a nice run, but their loss was against a horrible team in Frostburg State, in Ashland. Frostburg is 1-5 on the year.

Hampden-Sydney (5-2, 3-1) ... they finally got the Bridgewater monkey off their back, but they follow that up with seven turnovers and a loss against E&H. I would say had they only turned it over six times, they win that game and are sitting 4-0 in the ODAC. They are in the driver's seat for the conference title, and I would be shocked if they didn't win their last three games (CUA, Huntingdon, R-MC).

Bridgewater (5-1, 1-1) ... I called it back in March that the Eagles' toughest game would be at H-SC (read). Although we were one play away from coming away with the victory, we still deserved to lose. What a wake up call. After an impressive 76-6 (er, 76-28) win over Guilford, I think the Eagles should win their rest of their games. That doesn't mean they will, though. And that's why we play the games.

Emory & Henry (4-2, 1-1) ... the best defense in the conference (to date), but a very one-dimensional offense (run, run, run). They take care of the ball on the ground (309 rush attempts, only one fumble), but when they're forced to throw it, they're bad (112 pass attempts, seven interceptions). I can see them winning three of their last four, or losing three of their last four.

Washington & Lee (3-2, 1-2) ... it looks like they're still thinking about that 42-0 loss to Wilkes in the playoffs last season. They had unimpressive wins against 1-5 Franklin & Marshall and 0-6 Averett. In their other three games, they've given up 36 points a game. Where did the conference's best defense from a year ago, go? They have four difficult games remaining on their 2007 slate, so they can still make a statement. But three are on the road, and they have a 2-6 road record over the last two seasons.

Guilford (4-2, 0-2) ... their football team gave up more points to Bridgewater (76) than their men's basketball team did during the regular season last year (66 and 52). If their remaining opponents (W&L, R-MC, CUA, E&H) watch the Bridgewater film, and (a) get their DLs to make Vogelbach (who looked 5'9'') throw over their outstretched arms, as well as (b) play their defensive backs up close to the line of scrimmage, then I can't see the Quakers having much success the rest of the way. But then again, a good offense will always give you a chance to win on Saturday ... so we'll see.

Catholic (4-2, 0-2) ... they're only 19 points away from 0-6 on the year (with wins by 7, 6, 1, and 1 points), but they get their next three games at home (albeit against H-SC, E&H, and GC). I have a feeling their heading towards their fourth straight 1-5 or 0-6 season. Ricca has to have a mistake free (or close to it) game for the Cardinals to win, and he hasn't many. Perhaps more an offensive line issue than a Ricca decision making issue. They played E&H and BC tought last year (lost by four and seven, respectively), so they certainly won't go down without a fight.

Congrad's to my beloved Tiger's on their win against W&L.
We must improve on the Defensive side of the ball or it is going to bite us.
A great offense is a wonderful thing to have, but I have alway's believed that its defense that win's championship's....so we must tighten up !
What about those Eagle's.....WOW !......Was that their Basketball team playing yesterday ?......I knew Guilford's Defense was not that great, but 76 points. Great Job BC.....yeah, I would say you guy's sent a messege to the ODAC.
Also congrad's to RMC.....I called this last year when we played you guy's in Death Valley...I said look out for Macon next year, THEY ARE GOING TO BE VERY TUFF !!!.....And, yes, you guy's have a fine football team in 07.
What can I say....I hate sounding like a repeat. But, its like I have said before...." The ODAC IS SOLID THIS YEAR "....It will be a race to the finish !
Good Luck to ODAC team's....I pray all you young men stay healthy this year and give all us fan's a year to remember !
GO TIGER'S !!!

It's whether you get up !

Kid,

I think you can throw the Frostburg game out as an indicator of what kind of team R-MC has.  I know almost every team I have watched over the years sometimes plays a team that they take too lightly and somehow expect to beat by just stepping on the field.  When you do that, you can get beat by the lowliest team and I think the Jackets were guilty of that.  Plus the Jackets were missing a key member of the defense that game and it probably altered the chemistry a little as it affects every team when a key player is out, especially a senior.

The Frostburg loss was a fluke.  The Jackets should have won that game, but lack of concentration contributed to several turnovers and to Frostburg's credit they capitalized on those mistakes.  Even mighty Bridgewater has had concentration lapses over the years, few as they may be, and maybe had some scores closer than they should have been considering the Eagles had the overwhelming edge in talent.

To be a champion you have to think like a champion and act accordingly.  I have nothing but respect for the Eagles as they have been true champions the past several years.  But we all know that in football change is a constant.  This Yellowjacket team is starting to think like champions.   They know they still have three extremely talented and very tough teams to get past and, trust me, R-MC is NOT taking Guilford, Bridgewater or H-SC lightly.  They know every single game from here on out is going to be a real battle and they must play their "A" game.  The Jackets are confident they will do much better than 6-4.

By the way, Emory & Henry had some nice passes yesterday.  Booher has an arm and wasn't sloppy.  They also ran well and had a good defense.  They played hard,  but just came up a little short.  It was a great game; they have a good team.

Great commentary, Kid.

Big games this coming week:

Bridgewater  (1-1) at Emory & Henry (1-1) - a must-win for both teams

Washington & Lee (1-2) at Guilford (0-2) - the loser gets a 3rd loss

Hampden-Sydney (3-1) at Catholic (0-2) - a must-win for Hampden-Sydney

Excuse me for looking down the road, but with only 2 ODAC games left,  the Tigers' ODAC season is 2/3rds done .....

If Hampden-Sydney is able to win out and go 5-1, they will be going to the NCAAs unless they finish in a two-way tie with Emory and Henry.  For that reason, I'll be rooting for the Yellow Jackets to win as long as the Wasps do ... until they host the Tigers in Ashland, of course.  (If the Yellow Jackets make it a three-way tie at 5-1, the Tigers will get the NCAA bid on the basis of "longest draught.")

The best thing for the Tigers would be for Bridgewater to hand the Wasps their 2nd loss this coming weekend.

The Tigers defeat W&L today, 45-42, and are now 3-1 in the ODAC, with Catholic and RMC yet to go.  The Tigers play Catholic in D.C. next week and then have a bye and an out-of-conference game before going head-to-head with the Yellow Jackets on November 10 at Macon.

For the Tigers to win the ODAC championship and also the AQ for the NCAAs, two things need to happen:  (1) the Tigers need to win their last 2 ODAC games, and (2) either Bridgewater, W&L, Guilford, or Catholic needs to hand Emory & Henry a 2nd loss.

Only 4 ODAC teams have a chance at going 5-1 or better now:  HSC, Bridgewater, Emory & Henry, and Randolph-Macon.  If the Tigers go 5-1, they could conceivably be in a 3-way tie at 5-1 with RMC and E&H .... and the tie-breaker would go to the Tigers (longest drought).  Alternatively, they could be in a 2-way tie at 5-1 with RMC (tie-breaker to Tigers), a 2-way tie at 5-1 with BC (tie-breaker to Tigers), or a 2-way tie at 5-1 with EHC (tie-breaker to the Wasps).

BC and E&H cannot both end up 5-1: They play at Emory on October 20.
BC and RMC cannot both end up 5-1: They play in Bridgewater on November 3.

Thoughts?

You were good up until the last line.  I think you forgot RMC is 3-0 right now.  BC and RMC could both end up 5-1 IF both teams win out AND BC beats RMC at Jopson on Nov 3rd.  BC would win the tie-breaker if only those two teams were 5-1.  If more than two teams are 5-1, BC would lose the tie-breaker.
GO BC!
