It seemed like a sloppy day all around down in Danville.  Bridgewater turned the ball over several times on the center-quarterback exchange.  The defensive preformance was encouraging with the interception return for a touchdown.  It was a decent first win for the young Eagles.

Go BC

Actually the weather in Danville was great at game time. The field was dry (it had been covered) rain stopped at arond 10:30 am and by 2 pm kickoff it was hot as sin. Congrats to the eagles they have one heck of a tight end. He looks like he is 8 foot but really he is only 6' 4". Averett gave up close to a 100 yards in penatiles today. Most of that in the first half and by the defense. Every time it looked like they were going to stop BC, they would jump offsides, or do something else stupid. Averett's offense didn't show up today until the 4th quarter.

Looks like BC is going to be right in the mix this year. Good luck

kickerdad,

I was not able to make it to the game so I would have no idea about the weather.  From the radio broadcast I was able to gleam that the penalties and turnovers made for some sloppy football.  As it was the first game of the season for two young teams, I hope both BC and Averett are able to clean up the penalties and turnovers as the season continues.  Good luck to the Cougars. :)

SCguy

I watched the game on the internet and what I saw looked like a youth football league offense. This is an offense that better never be behind in the fourth qtr. It's a throwback to the single wing. The passing was terrible (yes it was raining) but F&M was able to muster 140+ yds of offense to 59 and completed some passes. W&L completed 2 of 14 for 12 yds. All the Dline has to do is get their arms up and the QB has a forest to throw thru. All 1-3 step drop passing of a play action.

BTEXPRESS

I was really surprised on how F & M manhandled the Generals offense last week. I know W & L lost their great receiver Martin but isn't their QB Varner a 3 year starter? If the first game is any indication, it could be a long season in Lexington!

Bwana

The Kid moves on   :'( , but the Pick 'em survives! ;D

Everyone loves the D3Football.com ODAC Pick-em.  But with The Kid moving on someone needs to put their foot down...and that foot is Bwana.

Yes, we have to paraphrase "Animal House" whenever possible.  The Germans will soon be bombing Pearl Harbor.

While I can never replace The Kid, hopefully we can continue an entertaining sideline that so many have seemed to enjoyed and I have found so humbling over the past few years.

Unless there are unanimous objections from everyone who has ever posted on the D3/ODAC boards, we will use the straight head to head format of past years.  All the ODAC games, plus a regional game and a national game selected by your humble coordinator.

Let's give it a shot!  If folks want to participate, then we continue...

This week picks must be in by 12 noon EST on 9.13.2008 to qualify for this round.  Head on over to the D3boards.com/Post Patterns/General football/Pick-Ems, etc./Topic: ODAC pick 'em 2008.

Note, you have to be a registered d3football.com member to be able to see the pick 'em boards!

Let the Games begin!

On a more lackluster note, I'd like to find out what happened in PA to R-M,  Read the account in the paper and on the web site, but I'm still not sure if this was supposed to happen.

Or not?  Maybe it was.   I don't know enough about King, apparently.

Good morning, Jacketlawyer.  It was an upset, for sure ... and especially when you consider the 21-point margin.  King's plays in the MAC and only finished 1-9 in '07.  Perhaps the Monarchs have improved a lot and part of it may have been field conditions and weather due to Hanna as it passed over PA, but a real surprise nonetheless.  At any rate, after RMC's great 8-2 season, I think they were clearly the favorite going into this game.  Hopefully, the Yellow Jackets can regroup from what has to be a very disappointing opening game loss.

Thanks Hasa, and it's good to see you for yet another ODAC season, and good luck to your Quakes!!

Yeah, I'm as glad as any YJ fan about last year's season at 8-2, but we need to get on with this season, which is why I haven't been posting too much.  I wanted to wait until everything started.

Not gonna sing "hosanna in the highest," yet.  Yet.  I'll take 8-2 again, but one of the "8" needs to come out of Farmville.

To piggy back on hasa's comments, what I hear from sources about the game at King's is that the conditions were terrible, and anytime you cough up the ball four times (7 total fumbles, but 4 lost), your chances of winning diminish.  Conditions were sloppy, and that made for a sloppy game from the Jackets.  Jacket fans can rest assured that that is not an excuse for the loss, merely an explanation, as Coach Arruzza will not make excuses for his team's performance.  They ran the ball reasonably well (Thornton 30 rush, 124 yds), but the passing game was anemic (6/24, 2 TD's, but still only 6 completions!?!), and the turnovers cost them in the end, preventing them from getting in the end zone enough, as well as putting King's in great position to score a couple of times (Thornton fumble @ RMC 37, botched snap on a punt, resulting in a fumble that was recovered at the RMC 3 yd line).

Rest assured the Jackets have put it behind them and are gearing up for the home opener against Hopkins in  Ashland this weekend...my bet would be they have been working on protecting the ball quite a bit, and will return to 2007 form with the power running game, and the defense shutting opponents down.

my 2 cents...

And a fine two cents it is.  A report like this was exactly what I was looking for! 8)

Thanks rmc6th, and I hope I get to read more of your stuff this year. ;D

I was at he R-MC Kings game.  While the weather and turnovers contributed to the loss, from what I observed they got away from their identity; running the ball, contolling the clock, stopping the run and creating turnovers.  The first few series they ran the ball well and then would attempt to pass in short yaradge situations or on first down.  A few examples:

First series:

R 1-10 R38   RANDOLPH-MACON drive start at 14:50 (1st).
R 1-10 R38   Zak Thornton rush for 7 yards to the RMC45 (Victor Sierra).
R 2-3  R45   Zak Thornton rush for 5 yards to the 50 yardline, 1ST DOWN RMC (Matt
               Rhodes).
R 1-10 R50   Zak Thornton rush for 8 yards to the KINGS42 (Matt Rhodes).
R 2-2  K42   Brandon Braner pass incomplete to Rod Nelson.
  R 3-2  K42   PENALTY KINGS Encroachment 5 yards to the KINGS37, 1ST DOWN
               RMC.
R 1-10 K37   Zak Thornton rush for 9 yards to the KINGS28 (Victor Sierra), PENALTY RMC
holding 10 yards to the KINGS38.
  R 1-11 K38   1st and 11.
R 1-11 K38   Zak Thornton rush for 8 yards to the KINGS30 (Ryan Nelson).
R 2-3  K30   Brandon Braner sacked for loss of 10 yards to the KINGS40 (Mike Lovett).
R 3-13 K40   Brandon Braner pass complete to Rod Nelson to the KINGS36, fumble forced by

First series 2nd QTR

R 1-10 R36   Start of 2nd quarter, clock 15:00.
R 1-10 R36   Zak Thornton rush for 6 yards to the RMC42 (Tom Tulaney).
R 2-4  R42   Zak Thornton rush for 4 yards to the RMC46, 1ST DOWN RMC
               (ChristianBecker).
R 1-10 R46   Brandon Braner pass incomplete to Rod Nelson.
R 2-10 R46  Zak Thornton rush for 6 yards to the KINGS48 (Justin Zlotek).
R 3-4  K48   Brandon Braner pass incomplete to Earl Peoples.
  R 4-4  K48   Ben Keyser punt 32 yards to the KINGS16, downed.

second series 2nd QTR

R 1-10 R21   RANDOLPH-MACON drive start at 03:15 (2nd).
R 1-10 R21   Zak Thornton rush for 7 yards to the RMC28 (Craig Geibert).
R 2-3  R28   Brandon Braner rush for 7 yards to the RMC35, 1ST DOWN RMC (Craig
               Geibert).
R 1-10 R35   Brandon Braner pass incomplete to Rod Nelson.
R 2-10 R35   Brandon Braner rush for 8 yards to the RMC43 (Shane McNamara;Brian Mitros).
  R 3-2  R43   Timeout Randolph-Macon, clock 01:28.
R 3-2  R43   Zak Thornton rush for 2 yards to the RMC45, 1ST DOWN RMC (Craig
               Geibert;Tom Tulaney).
R 1-10 R45   Zak Thornton rush for 5 yards to the 50 yardline (Mike Lovett).
R 2-5  R50   Zak Thornton rush for 4 yards to the KINGS46 (Craig Geibert).
  R 3-1  K46   Timeout Randolph-Macon, clock 00:34.
R 3-1  K46   Brandon Braner pass intercepted by Matt Rhodes at the KINGS30, Matt Rhodes
return 13 yards to the KINGS43 (Zak Thornton).

Defensivley the right side of the defense was getting destroyed.  That is where Kings had most of their success running the ball.

If you look back on last season R-MC created a lot of turnovers and they capitilized on many of those.

All that being said it's very difficult to overcome five turnovers( four fumbles, one int)

While they only lost 4 starters on each side of the ball it is apparent they were key starters.

There is a lot of season left and hopefully they can get back to what made them successful last year.

Bill--Waste of space.

Who the heck are you.  JacketLawyer was looking for an account of the game.  Thanks for your support.

Finally I am able to steal a few minutes to post a hello to everybody on our ODAC board.  I got to go to the game in Danville where it was so damn hot, and since it had called for cloudy and rainy, I hadn't brought any sunscreen.  I was redder than the shrimp that came out of the low country boil.  By the way that was delicious.  I don't know what kind of sausage that was, but it was great.  Both teams looked very young out there, but we got it together before Averett did and piled up a bunch of points.  2 defensive TDs is always a good thing.  there were penalties galore, ours mostly happened in the second half.  If our guys were as hot as I was, they were probably quite tired.  But the Eagles didn't give in.  We scored another TD and stopped Averett to get the 34-13 win.  Sweet.  And a lot of film to watch on Monday and to learn from.  Hope to see lots of you at Stone Station both this weekend and throughout the season.  the only trip I am not planning on making is to Lycoming and I may change my mind.  But I have signed up for all the others.  Looking forward to good conversation, communion and fun times!!!  WE need to have a special service of communion for Kid, what do you think?  and icksnay on the blue!!!
Brownies for Film Day--Now there's a Slogan I can live with!!!:)  Go EAGLES!
