Tempting, I know allsky, to lounge in the recliner and plug into the game via webcast...but from the looks of it here at the stadium this morning, the sun is trying to break through and it looks like we may have a nice, albeit muggy day to watch some ODAC football!

Glad I was able to get motivated and head down to H-S to see the game in person. Good win for the Tigers.  Quakers turned the ball over on their first two possessions and were down 14 to 0 with only 3 or 4 minutes gone in the game. Tough to overcome that. D gave up some yards but did a good job of bending and not breaking. Don't think they sacked JV but once or twice but did a good job of keeping pressure on him. Man...the kid can play!! Despite the pressure by the Tiger D, he was still able to pass for 300 yards.
On another note, some may not know that Josh Simpson did not play today. (turf toe) IMO, that may be a blessing in disguise (easy to say after the W) because it got some other guys PT. That will pay off later in the season. Sedlar spread it around well today. Nice meeting Cory's dad.

allsky, thanks for the text messages today.  Wish the outcome had been better for the Quakers, but sounds like a good crowd and lots of yards passing by both teams.  I look forward to seeing a game again next weekend.

Hasa...you are quite welcome. I know how it is when you need a score fix and can't get one.  :D Just sorry you couldn't make it, especially under the circumstances.
I'm sure you are disappointed at the outcome, but as you said, the Tigers were the better team yesterday. As long as JV is on the field, the Quakers are rarely out of a game. When H-S went up 28 to 0, against most teams, I would be inclined to say "game over".  I knew that wasn't the case yesterday and when GC cut the score to 28 to 14 at half, I was very nervous. You have to give credit to the Tiger O for taking the opening kickoff of the second half and driving down the field and scoring. GC holds and the mo possibly shifts. WOW....just occurred to me that was the only  score of the second half. With those two O's, that is pretty amazing.  :o
On another note, as often posted previously, this old school heart enjoyed seeing a little D played yesterday. The defensive intensity in the first quarter, set the tone quickly. At times 2nd Q on, I thought the Tiger D looked tired. Of course, when you are on the field as long as they are and then add in chasing JV all over the place, it shouldn't be surprising.  I think the reality is, as long as H-S has the type of quick strike O that they do, a bend but don't break type of D is about as much as can be expected. Unless of course they can recruit a ton of blue chip players.  ;D

very glad to see the tiger's d step up yesterday and handle business.  as a former linebacker for the tigers, it was very tough preparing for jv in previous years because he is very good at getting rid of the ball when in trouble.  the tigers had a great game plan of pressuring him into bad situations, but he is still very good at throwing to the check down routes as we saw yesterday.  i mean, this kid is a great quarterback, but the tiger d proved to be too much for him in this game.  yesterday was a a big day for the tiger's d and i think this is what they need heading into stone station this coming weekend.  they will need to have momentum on their side because the H-SC/BC game is generally a shootout.  GO TIGERS!!!

Just wanted to check in with some details from the game in Ashland Saturday...Weather turned out to be pretty nice, a little humid, but overall a great day.

The game was certainly a tale of two halves...Catholic started off well, driving down field, aided by a couple of questionable interference calls on RMC in the red zone, and scored to start the game.  RMC got on the board with a FG, and then scored with a pass from Faulkner to Braner with less than a minute left(PAT was no good).  Catholic promptly marched down the field in 30 seconds and scored before half to go up 14-9.

Second half was a different story.  RMC got a great kick return to start the half and got the ball to the Catholic 11, and ran a fake filed goal to perfection...except for the holding penalty at the goal line that negated it.  So they put 3 up and make it 14-12.

RMC's D brought it in the second half, limiting Catholic to no first downs and 29 yards, before their final scoring drive of 63 yards, when the game was already in hand.  RMC looked a lot better on D, and they looked very similar to the ball hawking D that they played last year, gang tackling RB's and dominating the line of scrimmage.

IMO, the switch from Braner to Fualkner at QB has helped the passing game immensely, as well as Pedro moving Braner to WR...keeps the defense guessing when he is in there, and the kid has made the most of it, catching 4 TD's in 3 games since moving to WR!

Thornton seems to be getting on track a little more, but some of us in the gallery were talking about the difference between the O-line this year vs. last year...Thornton is having much more trouble getting to the second line of the defense this year...Instead of getting 5 or 6 on 1st down, getting pulled down by LB's, he is getting stopped by the D-Line for 2 or 3, and he has yet to bust through for the game breaking run this year.  I think this speaks a lot to the experience of the line last year (4 Sr's, 1 Jr) vs this year (1 Sr, the rest are Fr and So)...but they are working hard, nonetheless, and it is good to see that much youth getting all that PT, because they are only going to get stronger and smarter with time.

On to W&L next week, first road test in the ODAC this year, should be a good one!  Go Jackets!

Thanks for the update; I know I enjoy reading them. :)

Depending on the amount of work I get done, I might head up to Lexington to see the Jackets/Gennies collision.  Been a while since I had a few cold chillies at the Palms and then bumped my head on the low ceiling on the way to the basement (oww).

Congratulations to Josh Vogelbach for the outstanding career that he is putting together at Guilford.  I am very glad that HSC will not have to play against him again.  He is one of the best to ever play in D3 football.  While attending the game at HSC, I was never comfortable with any lead until the final horn as long as #16 was in the game.  He makes everyone around him a better player and he shows true leadership when he is on the field.  I know individual records do not replace team wins. However I wanted to ackowledge the talent and skills of one of the best to play in our division.

(Hiccup) yes.
I've been to the Palms as well ... spent a weekend in Lexington a few years ago to watch the Quakers and the Generals.  I look forward to seeing the renovated Wilson stadium!

A rare Friday night game for the Quakers this weekend ... at home vs Southern Virginia.  The Knights are only 1-4, but were leading W&L 28-21 until a 4th quarter comeback was sparked by Sitterson's 94-yard kickoff return.  The Gennies then scored the final TD with just over a minute to go for a 35-28 win.  Looks as though SVU wants to turn this into a true rivalry ... the schools are only a few miles (and hundreds of millions of dollars!) apart down Highway 60 from Lexington to Buena Vista.

Not sure what'll happen, but the Guilford offense needs to get back on track ... and stop turning the ball over so much!  Hope to see lots of GC fans there!  Not sure who may be reading from SVU, but safe travels and welcome to Guilford.

Hope you'all get it in gear this weekend against So. Va.  We have a formidable task with HS coming to town!  Our team is so young and green, but they have played well in spurts.  Afraid if they down play the whole game at 120% that it will be a long afternoon, but the Olinemom will be there to cheer no matter what!!!
