And, yes, Cortland won ....10-2 over NC Wesleyan to win tourney in Rocky Mount, NC. Emory only win in three games was over RDragons

Cortland came out as the overall winner of the Coldwell Banker Tournament of Champions in North Carolina. After a first weekend of games, I think Cortland played well. Obviously it is tough to come out and just play with everything clicking after being inside for a month. From what the box scores show it seems that Cortland has a good core of solid arms. Although Assman did not pitch well, he has been a solid contributor in the rotation for the past 2 years. I expect to see him bounce back after a rough first outing. Something I did notice in that game vs. Emory is that both teams walked a lot. Emory walked 8 and Cortland 14. Perhaps there is a bit more to it than both teams being a bit wild. I am not going to make excuses for the Cortland Staff, and although I was not at the games, I would imagine that both teams were being squeezed a bit. Emory obviously made the most of there base runners and got some key hits. Cortland next takes the field in a week and a half down in Long Island. They have a 3 game set against Old Westbury, Mount St. Vincent, and Farmingdale. Hopefully the fields are playable.  A few posts before this one from a Wesleyan fan/parent said that Hartling was impressive. I wonder if he will get a shot to start in Long Island. Hopefully these 10 days off they can get the few kinks worked out and looking like the Cortland teams from years past.
Omar Minaya is a GREAT general manager. . .

Plattsburgh bounced back nice today winning two on friday after dropping their first game of the season.  I don't remember all the scores but i know they lost 6-1 yesterday.  O'leary won the first game today and went the distance.  Greene started the second.  Plus they got redemption by beating the team they lost to yesterday.

Hope the rest of the season goes good for the Cardinals.

Old Westbury Coach Brown?  What an embarassment!!  Way to get your team prepared to play.  In the last two years, Cortland has lost to teams that normally have no chance of beating Cortland in a regular season much less with a World Series birth on the line.  The program is headed south my friend whether you believe it or not.  Time to take some accountability.  Easy thing to do when all is going well isn't it?  What a joke!

agreed marvin.....he's got these players wound tighter than a drum .... and it shows....... take some accountability JB

The Cortland schedule says the game was to have been played at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank. Was the game moved? Cortland tied the game in the top of the ninth and lost when the score reverted to the eighth inning when the game was called because of darkness. Those fields have lights. Did someone lose the key to the electrical room?

I don't think Old Westbury is that bad of a loss. The Panthers are the top threat to Farmingdale State in the Skyline and return almost everyone from last year's team minus the stud pitcher that was the first Division III player taken in the 2009 draft.

That said, an offense with that many weapons shouldn't have problems scoring runs. Looking at the box score, Kevin Jackson and John Zilnicki both did not play and you had Adam Dimino in the clean-up spot.

As was previously stated, Cortland always losses a game or two to a team it shouldn't. It's early in the season, I don't see this as that big of a deal.

Listen, I understand the variables in baseball that allow any given team the chance to win no matter the difference in talent for example.  However, I don't care if Joe Torre is coaching, Jose Reyes is at short with Ichiro in center, Cortland or at least the teams of the past DO NOT lose to Old Westbury or allow Farmingdale St. the opportunity to represent the region at the World Series.  Brown gets outcoached by coaches with far less talent on their roster.  Brown  makes his players scared to compete or fail because he cannot objectively take blame for team failure and this is the result, a loss to a far inferior team.  The level of talent at Cortland has for far too long covered up the head    coaches true knowledge of the game and overall ability to make changes in coaching philosophy year in and year out.  Just blame the players when all else fails. Just my observation and opinon as a spectator on the outside looking in.

Thanks for the Plattsburgh update jack31.  Looks like the cards struggled to put hits together in their 6-1 loss to Manchester.  I don't know what Coach Doorey was thinking in starting Cory Johnston in the season opener.  In my opinion, he is not the best choice for a starter and I don't see him putting the Cards in a position to win.  Brian Burns came in and did a good job over the final 3 innings.  He only allowed one hit and had 4 K's.  The Cards struggled on offense, but I think playing for the first time outside had something to do with that.

Yesterday the Cards avenged this first loss to Manchester with an 8-6 win and an additional win against Penn State-Berks (9-4).  Good to see that the offense picked up in a big way.  They had a total of 21 hits on the day (10 in the first game; 11 in the second).  Matt O'Leary continues to win games by hitting great spots and being able to throw any pitch at any time in the count.  Hopefully the Cards will be able to keep up the intensity in today's games.

Looks like I got an answer faster than I thought.  Plattsburgh beat Wilkes 3-2 and Penn State-Abington 8-4 this morning/afternoon.  Dan Tracy had 11 K's in 7 innings of work.  The Cards had to work for this win. Ther isn't any info on the Penn State game yet.

Plattsburgh is showing a lot of character early in the season.  The can grind out a close game, or take an early lead and keep scoring runs to cement a win.  It's still too early to evaluate how Plattsburgh will fare later on in the season, but Coach Doorey has to feel good about his team's performance.  The bus ride home will definitely be much more enjoyable for the guys.  They just have to take these wins and build on them.  They will have to in order to beat strong teams like Cortland, Oneonta, Brockport, and Fredonia in the near future.

whitey16

well said Marvin.... JB philososphy is grab these D2 bench warmers and they will become D3 superstars.....not.... transfers OK but to dump the guys who work hard up through the system for this new bunch of hopefuls is just bad management skills.   Teams are built and learn to play together for some time . in order to be sucessfull.  When will the AD notice the Joe Brown who showboats and publicly humiliates his players in front of 200 fans for missing a signal or missing a cut off.  The time to do this is in practice sessions ....not games......the bottom line is that except for a chosen few, his players do not like him.....you can not win with that going on......Cortland wins despite JB  not because of him....... just my 2 cents

I've got to say that I think it's pretty weak the way that a lot of people on the boards for NY Region are piling on coaches.  If it's so damn easy and anybody can do it, go ahead.  I saw similar comments on the Liberty League board and I think it's mostly BS.

Yelling at kids for missing signals and blowing assignments?  Being wound too tight when your livelihood is at stake??  Putting too much pressure on guys?  This is really what we're talking about?  I've got to tell you that if that's the barometer, Cortland has been a really tough place to play for 20 years or more.  Maybe guys need to get some thicker skin or just plain tougher if it's bothering them so much.  Probably not bothering them as much as you.

Could coaches sometimes get more from their guys by loosening up a bit?  Probably, but that's for them to figure out.  Somebody who didn't know better would think that they're sitting on MLB level talent and just tanking it away.  Is Cortland more talented and deeper than most everyone else?  Sure, but you basically take a leak on the whole restof the region by ripping on them for losing to what looks like a decent squad.

whitey16

not trying to take anything away from Old Westbury....... good win...... fordyce can pitch.... and the old westbury squad  looked like they were playing loose and havin fun...... something that seems to be missing from the cortland squad........ wonder why?...... this is a tough game to play when the fun is gone.......just my 2 cents

Relax, its a marathon not a sprint!!!! Cortland will right the ship and play well eventually. When you get right down to it, the only thing that matters is winning the SUNYAC and the getting the Automatic bid(Pool A)!
The way I look at it is that you are playing for that regional bid and if it takes a few losses early figuring out who plays well together, its worth it!
As far as throwing guys under the bus for transfers..... lets remember this is college sports not modified! The best guys play regardless of their age, yr in school or transfer status!
You can look at every coaching decision made by every coach in America that doesn't work and rip it with hindsight! You should have bunted after your 3-4 guys k with 1st and 2nd w no outs......no kidding. You should have taken the P out after the 1st pitch gopher ball after you visit the bump... duh!
Not saying JB hasn't made mistakes in the past but what coach hasn't????
Maybe Cortland loses 10 games this yr.... so what!
I know we'll be in the regional mix at the end, we have been every yr since 1993!
