Plattsburgh State sweeps a doubleheader from Brockport this afternoon as both games go to extra innings.

Plattsburgh wins the 1st game 7-6 in 10 innings.

Plattsburgh wins the 2nd game 4-3 in 11 innings.

Cardinals move to 5-3 in the SUNYAC and take over 2nd place, overall mark is 24-6. Brockport drops to 4-5 in conference play and now in 4th place. 15-13 overall.

Plattsburgh takes 2 in extras from Brockport.  Plattsburgh took the early lead in game 1, but Brockport battled and took the game into extra frames.  Errors killed Brockport as Plattsburgh scored the game winner in game 1 on some infield miscues.

Brockport had the early lead in game 2, but once again errors were the deciding factor.  Brockport tagged the ball really well, but stranded a lot of runners.  Plattsburgh loaded the bases with 1 out in the 11th on an infield single (ss fielded the ball cleanly with runners on 1st and 2nd, but couldn't decide where to throw the ball... mental error).  Tory Bouyea beat out a double-play ball in the next at-bat to win the game.

Cortland rebounds for split at Oneonta, winning 8-6

Oswego splits with New Paltz, Lakers by 10-1, then NP 2-1

Congrats to New Paltz freshman Chris Chismar, who struck out a school-record 20 batters in the Hawks' 2-1 win vs. Oswego today. Chismar is the ninth pitcher in Div. III history to strike out at least 20 batters in a game, and the first since 2003, according to the NCAA Record Book.

The only other SUNYAC pitcher on that list was Dan Jordan of Oswego, who fanned 20 batters vs. Hobart in 1991. Oneonta's Scott Meyer struck out 19 vs. Brockport in 2001.

Thanks to New Paltz SID Doug Herman for tipping me off to this accomplishment today.

Yup, Plattsburgh would have to sweep the weekend to give the conference tourney a change of scenery.

First off, congrats to Chris Chismar from New Paltz. Unbelievable performence. I don't care at what level you play... 20 strikeouts is unreal. That is just complete domination. With only a few games left in SUNYAC play, the field is still open aside from Cortland locking a playoff spot. I saw the Cortland/New Paltz game this weekend. First time seeing New Paltz play this year and I will tell you what, that team is a much better New Paltz team then previous years. They went with 2 freshman pitchers against Cortland and they both threw real well. Had New Paltz cleaned it up on the defensive aspet of the game then it may be a different outcome. A bunch of big errors really hurt them. Judson didn't seem to have it this Sunday, I didn't see the game but he has been a staple in that rotation and you expect him to bounce right back. The NP line up had a few good sticks. One to point out was Boetcher. He can swing it. Cortland went at him real tough it seemed. Bringing in Southworth (in the 7th) to face him with the bases loaded, 2 outs, was a big spot and a bold statement by Joe Brown as to what he thinks of Boetcher and how much confidence he has in Southworth. Southworth fell behind but came back with a good 3-1 fastball that Boetcher just missed and wound up popping out. He swung it well all day even though the stats don't show it (3/10). He was on every fastball and every offspeed. Cortland just capitalized on every NP mistake, which is what good teams do. Each error by NP cost them dearly. The Cortland starters (Brown and Ratliff) threw well enough to get by, but NP kept the pressure on them. In the end it came down to defense and bullpen. Cortland with the clear edge. Nickel and Simone just absolutely rip, enough said.
Omar Minaya is a GREAT general manager. . .

1. Cortland 9-1, locked a playoff spot. 1 win and they once again host SUNYACS (was there really any question?)
2. Plattsburgh 5-3, Cortland (2), Oswego (2)
3. Brockport 4-5, Fredonia (2), New Paltz (1)
4t. New Paltz 3-4, Oneonta (2), Fredonia (2), Brockport (1)
4t. Oneonta 3-4, New Paltz (2), Oswego (2), Fredonia (3-3 tied after 8)
6. Fredonia 2-5 Brockport (2), New Paltz (2), Oneonta (3-3 tied after 8)
7. Oswego 2-6 Plattsburgh (2), Oneonta (2)

Interesting games left. Looks like it could be the same 4 as always... New Paltz could play spoiler though. It will be tough to sweep Oneonta with Filak throwing one of the games... but it isn't impossible. I am pulling for New Paltz, I would love to see what they can do in the playoffs with 3 freshman who all throw well and a stud lefty. It will be a tough road to Wallace Field, but it is a very real possibility.

Thanks for the fair assessment BaseballEliteNY.  It's always good to hear a well thought out evaluation on the board.  I am definitely pulling for NP to come through.  It would be nice to shake up the tourney again this year.  Being a faithful Plattsburgh alum, I hope it's not at the Card's expense though (life will go on if it does though).  The way Cortland has been playing in conference sure seems to indicate that they will enjoy the comforts of Wallace field again.  The conference is down to the wire.  Can't wait to see what the weekend brings us.  Good luck to all.

I agree. New Paltz is young but may have a shot.
I was impressed with there 1 through 4 batters in the line up, the middle infield players and the center fielder.

My prediction is:
1.Cortland
2. Plattsburgh
3. Oneonta
4. New Paltz

I don't see Brockport getting in the way they've been playing lately. I think Brockport and/or Fredonia would have to win out to get the 4th spot

cs2to6

I saw Cortland play, and they have to be the favorites to win the conference.  Although I would like to see New Paltz make the playoffs with that young team, the stats suggest otherwise.  They seem to have enough offense, and 4 starting pitchers who can keep them in the game.  Unfortunately, they are last or next to last in the league in fielding percentage.  According to some who have watched them play, defense was their strength in the win over Brockport (3-2), and  Chismar was just lights out versus Oswego (2-1).  Conversely defense was their undoing in game two versus Plattsburg, and the DH versus Cortland when they had something like 10 errors in two games.

NP is a young team.  If they rise to the occassion defensively, anything can happen.  The next couple of weekends will be exciting with so many meaningful games on tap.  I do, however, believe in the end it will be Cortland, Plattsburg, Oneonta, and Brockport playing for the league title.

I think Cortland is going to lock up the #1 spot and hosting, no question of course... plattsburgh, oneonta and fredonia. I'm going to go with a long shot here because I always like to pick the underdogs. Fredonia needs to win out in order to make it, and with them hosting Brockport and hosting New Paltz, on 2 separate weekends means they get to throw their number 1 and 2 each weekend so thats a huge plus. They also got their bats going against plattsburgh once again so that will make them more of a contender, however their fielding is questionable with dropped balls and errors. I just don't think plattsburgh's going to be able to pull one out against Cortland they looked iffy in a couple games and cortland is just red hot right now with the exception to the game against Filak so i don't see plattsburgh taking the number one spot. Oneonta will easily lock up a spot with their pitching and power hitting. Exciting weekend ahead, can't wait to see what unfolds.
