Great point by Hot Rod.

I guarantee every bubble team in the country was rooting for the weather to clear and Cortland St. to come back and win the tournament.

To bad school has to get in the way.   :(

I remember the three years we (Eastern CT) made it to regionals and had to travel we got home late Sunday night and had to contact our teachers and take all of our finals Monday or Tuesday morning in order to go to Regionals.

The only way this happens is if kids build a quality relationship with the teachers.  IMO most players dont do this and most kids have not grasped the idea of not playing professionally after college.  I have heard numerous kids get excited about maintaining a 2.0 just to be eligible.

With quality relationships built, I bet these teachers would have allowed their students to take their exam at a different time.

My wife would not like me saying this, but I would be willing to bet my childrens college fund on the fact that Brockport used this ploy as a bargaining chip. I sure once their coach made mention of this to Joan Sitterly or whomever is in charge of this stuff, she was forced to call things. A very unethical ploy by them, but nothing can be done now.

Do you have proof of this?  No?  Then don't insinuate such things.  The rules CLEARLY state that games cannot be played after Monday, and they weren't going to play 3 games on Monday.  Sorry, it's just the way it is.  It had NOTHING to do with academics or any other ploy.

AlleyCat

RPI and Clarkson played three times last year on the last day of the tournament to get the whole tourney in. There is no reason this couldn't have been done.

Nothing can be done now and remember, school comes first and they are STUDENT athletes.

Well obviously I was not there to deal with any of the deliberations over who played and when...but im not a idiot...

We all agree that the raindate for the tournament was Monday...correct

They could have easily played on Sunday, but as we stated, if they knew Brockport was leaving, there really was no point in pressing the issue...So yes pg this was a ploy. Im not insinuating anything, im just being an educated individual who can read situations...All Brockport had to do was say "sorry tests Monday"..which should have been followed up with "Have you read the rule book ?"

I think it's foolish to insinuate that unless Brockport's coach has a history of this type of thing, which I don't think he does.  Bottom line is that it's a rule that they should find a work around for, but that's not the fault of the players or coaches.

What's interesting is that Cortland has won, I think, 17 of the past 20 conference championships.  2 of those 3 losses came in situations where the tournament was stopped due to weather.  Given their history, it's not crazy to think that they could have come back and won both.  Just a little food for thought.

My son has taken his finals either in a dugout or hotel lobby past 3 years @ the Regionals. One professor made him take his finals after their returned from Appleton. So much for early finals.....It has nothing to do with a quality relationships with the students either.
This... is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.  "There are three types of baseball players: those who make things happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened."

Are we really having this discussion? Honestly?

What's done is done. Cortland will more than likely get another chance at Brockport at the regionals as long as both teams are sent to Auburn. If not, Brockport will get a chance to take on say Wooster, Heidelberg or Marietta in Ohio.

On a side note, a team should never play three games in one day.

Agreed teams should not play 3 games in a day. BUT it has happen this year during the regular season and last year in a conference tourney in DIII. Teams must get permission from NCAA to do this but it has been granted in the past.

Truthfinder

You go play three games in that weather. Good Lord, it's over. Move on. The weakest team was ousted immediately, and the team that somehow was best when it counted most gets rewarded.

And the best team of them all is still going to the NCAAs, unless they get screwed by a committee member with a clear bias.

In other news, I can't take the Pool C chatter any more.

Let's end the Plattsburgh myth right now.

Their record is beyond bloated.

At first glance, 30-10 is impressive, but the facts on how they got there cannot be argued.

For the sake of argument, let's say a "top-quality" win would be against a team that finished with at least 25 wins. Plattsburgh's record against teams with 25 or more wins was 1-5, and they were outscored 62-26 in those games, i.e., not competitive against the best teams on their schedule.

The closest thing to a quality win on their schedule is taking Game 2 of a twinbill against 28-win Oneonta in conference regular-season play. They went 0-3 against Cortland, and were pounded by Castleton. The only other 25-win team on their schedule was Skidmore, a game that was first postponed because of a poor weather forecast. The Cardinals chose not to reschedule that game, instead adding St. Michael's (6-27-1) to fill that slot.

To say they are worthy of Pool C is insulting to the entire national tournament.

-- They went 7-7 against teams in their own conference.
-- Their starters had a 29.08 ERA in the SUNYAC tournament.
-- They have no record of excellence, having gone 1-16 all-time in conference tournament games.

Now, the Plattsburgh coach and fans will argue that the 18-game winning streak should figure into their argument for Pool C.

So who did they beat?

No one.

The combined winning percentage of the opponents in that 18-game streak was a less-than-mediocre .456, and none of those teams finished with better than a 23-17 record (Manchester College). It includes doubleheader sweeps of Minnesota-Morria (10-24) and Millikin (11-29), plus single-game wins over Wilkes (13-19), Penn State-Abington (15-20) and Scranton (16-24).

If they are deemed elite, worthy of Pool C, then the entire selection committee -- which includes Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey, remember -- should be overruled and the NCAA should appoint an emergency panel to investigate.

John great point.  This is unbelievable on here.  I do love the conspiracy theories though.  How bout this for an idea... Regular season champ gets the bid... a much more true representation of pitching depth and a much larger schedule of games to prove yourself.  Especially in leagues like the LL where they play 24 games I think it is a stronger accomplishment to win the league then a two day tournament.

Rick Vaughn

Just started reading this board, but Truthfinder...get a life.  You act like Doorey and the Cardinals are criminals for wanting to make the tournament and self promoting.  Forgive them for trying to play at the highest level they can...Did Doorey run over your dog?  Or are the attacks just so you can go for the record of lowest karma ever on D3 boards?

Find a team and right something positive about them.

DefenseWins

i agree, too many people saying too many negative things about teams, players, coachs, etc.... on this board......dont take anythng away from a team for competing, these kids work hard to win these ballgames and be student athletes and to downgrade performances, or rip on coachs is not fair for all the hard work these guys put in.....dont forget this is most coachs JOB and they work very hard at what they do.....and d3 players dont get money to play, they play because they love the game and they should be commended for their effort and character.

LL tournament this weekend- i like either skidmore or UR i just dont think ST LAWRENCE or Clarkson has the depth on the hill to compete for the whole tourny.......but clarkson has a sometime potent offense, and after seeing some of the numbers the skidmore offense seems to struggle greatly at some times......be interested to see who else comes out of the NY region with Brockport and most likely cortland. Who made it from farmingdale states league down that way this year?

AlleyCat

Right now I believe the NY region looks like this

Cortland - Pool C
St John Fisher - Pool B
Brockport - SUNYAC - Pool A
Manhattanville - Pool A
Rochester or Skidmore  - Pool A - Liberty League
Mid Atlantic Team - Pool A
New England Team - Pool A

Any other thoughts?
