Bridgewater, Va. 15, Cortland 14.  Bridgewater goes to 4-1 including three wins over NC Wesleyan

Tarheel0550

Cortland off to a rough start, dropping third straight .Lets see if they can rebound on Sunday.

Will have to get a disastrous ninth inning out of their minds. Dragons saw Bridgewater score six times in final at-bat. And after the first two batters were retired no less! Solo hr began the uprising, followed by hit batter, two singles, walk, single and game deciding two-run double. CState had just extended a 10-9 lead through eight innings

Jdex,is Cortland struggling with their pitching ,like it seems or just early season rust?Relievers seem to be a weak point for them this year.Coach Brown must be quite dissapointed with thier preformance so far.Could this be a year Oneonta takes advantage of a possible weakness in Cortland?

Wow.  Six runs with only one out to get to close it out.  That is why baseball is so great - no time clock.  I'm not sure about there being a blanket concern about Cortland's pitching, though.  They seemed to be fine in their opener, giving up only 2 runs (one on a PB/WP) to a strong Shenandoah team.  Bullpen obviously has to be a concern after yesterday, but Hourihan did a fine job in the opener in middle relief.

I do believe this will be a year that other SUNY teams may close the gap, though.  Oneonta, to me, has to prove they can be successful without Filak.  Plattsburgh, "truth's" whipping boy, has to prove they can consistently beat quality opponents.  I would not discount Brockport as they always seem to end up in the mix.

I think with the transfers Oneonta got in and the way Ferchen has been building his program Cortland and the rest of the SUNYAC will have their hands full.Filak wasnt the only reason Oneonta won last year, they have smart players and speed on their side .I'm not dicounting what Filak did last year but people seem to think he pitched every game Oneonta played last year. And if I was Cortand I would worry about not closing out games when you have the chance,I think this could be a down year for them.Plattsburg I just dont know enough about.

Egad, it's the middle of February! Any other SUNYACers daring to play this early against respectable southerners with games (and plenty of outdoor work) already under their belts? Don't get down on Cortland. This weekend only helps a team that from a distance (as in Florida) appears to have plenty of new, young pieces. Just check out '11 roster and compare to '10 stats.

Agree 100%. It's February, Cortland has a boatload of transfers and needs to replace basically the entire starting line-up from last year minus one or two kids. They'll start with a poor record more than likely but improve as the season goes on. All these games are doing right now is getting them ready for the New York schedule and league play.

As long as I've been covering the team, they have played a difficult schedule to start the season and this year is no exception. Shenandoah is a legitimate contender for the World Series and Bridgewater/Newport are no slouches. All three teams have probably been outside practicing for some time and I would bet Cortland has not been that lucky.

I would like to see Oneonta play a more difficult Florida schedule before crowning them as the Cortland beater.

Tarheel0550

I guess what everyone is saying is they should just mail the SUNYAC championship trophy to Cortland now and everyone else is playing for second?Oneontas Fl.schedule
MT.Aloyisus 21-23 last year
Waynesburg 15-22
Juniata          15-25
U-Mass Boston 32-17
Framingham st  24-18
Messiah          22-18
Keene St         27-17
Amherst         21-11

Not alot of gimmes in the bunch,2 teams with sub .500 records from last year.Probaby should have scheduled 7or 8 games with Illinois Wesleyan (oops !!)What i am saying is dont give the crown to Cortland yet there are alot of good teams in the SUNYAC this year and losing 4 or 5 games early hurts.Cortland ,Plattsburg and Oneonta are all going to beat up on each other this year and wins in and out of conference are going to make a big difference when regionals come around.

Cortland 3-5-2
Salisbury 0-4-4

Sr. southpaw M. Mahay works seven frames, two hits, 6 Ks, 2 bb. Soph righty T. Scott finishes including escaping first and third eighth with strikeout. Has 1-2-3 ninth.

Corts score early. Get pair of unearned runs, one on soph J. Wiltsie rbi hit. Next inning finds fr catcher and cleanup hitter T. Panetta with rbi single. Panetta 2x4, fr cf A. Smith of Vestal 2x4

Hope Oneonta and others contend. Competition is good

Tarheel0550

me too jdex I think its going to be a fun year watching the Sunyac, and I hope one of the teams makes it to the series again(hopefully Oneonta) but any team from the conference that could make it just brings more and hopefully better exsposure to the whole conference. And if your in Florida please send some much needed sunshine back up here!!

You're not a true Tarheel? As in Carolina can't be that bad. Then again you may be a New Yorker with true blue rooting interests? Eighty, we say 80, today with sun in F.L.A. Sorry bout that.

The Bridgewater web site says they won two out of three over NCWesleyan and are 3-2.

Bridgewater indeed 3-2 including yesterday's 14-4 loss at Christopher Newport. CN 5-1 .....Cortland 1-3

The southern teams are always ahead of the northern teams early.  Cortland will be great in Florida because they get out before the others.  It is finally good to see Oneonta play a decent team or two on their spring trip.  They traditionally go about 9-1 on their trips because of the slo-pitch softball teams they scheduled at Cocoa Beach.  I think it is most impressive that the 4th starter Cortland rolled out shut out a ranked team, not many teams have that ability.
