This... is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.  "There are three types of baseball players: those who make things happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened."

SUNYAC will be good this year. Lotta seniors graduated...it will be nice to see the young guns show what talent they have. Again I look forward to this powerhouse conference.... New Paltz, Fredonia and Brockport...nothing but Young Guns.

Excerpted from Marietta news accounts ......

MARIETTA - Marietta College and SUNY Cortland each won a game. But the biggest winner at the Oct. 8 twinbill was the Strecker Cancer Center. "It was really nice to see a good crowd out here," said MC skipper Brian Brewer after the NCAA Division III defending national champion Pioneers split a doubleheader with the Red Dragons of New York State, winning the first game 10-1 but dropping the nightcap 13-10. Most of the players on both sides saw some diamond action as the two head coaches subbed freely.

In the opener, MC broke open a close game with a six-run seventh inning. Righty Brian Gasser, the DIII Pitcher of the Year, started on the hill for the Pioneers and threw three innings. The Etta Express ace was relieved by Logan Lewis and Kyle Lindquist. Marietta's top hitter was third baseman Bryan Gregorich, who was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Second baseman Kirby Becker added three singles, and center fielder Aaron Hopper had a two-basehit.

Bouncing back in the nightcap, Cortland batted around and exploded for six runs in the top of the third inning. Max Rosing, Chris Jackson, Andrew Pezzuto, John Adornetto, and Donny Castaldo each drove in a run. MC got four of the runs back in the bottom half of the frame. All of this occurred with two outs. The Etta Express cut it to 6-5 in the fifth. But the Dragons responded with three runs in the top of the sixth to make it 9-5. In the bottom of the sixth, Marietta tied the game at 9-all. The MC Pioneers then took their first lead 10-9 in the seventh.

Cortland regained the lead in the eighth when it plated four runs. Matt June had one of the big hits, an RBI double. Bryan Mistretta also drove in a run.

"A split's a split, it's never a good thing and certainly not at home," Brewer said. "Having said that, I think we saw some good things. We had some young guys that played really well. I don't think our older guys played that well today. "Said Cortland coach Joe Brown, "It gives you something to improve upon. I certainly knew coming in that we were going to be playing a very good baseball team."

Well,Oneonta States AD finally got her wish,Coach Ferchen has been let go.Too bad the AD let her personal feelings get in the way of what was best for the players, students and fans of O-State.I hope the players win despite the inept actions of an over-payed under achieving AD.What kind of coach is she planning on finding a month before the season?A has been or a never was?or a never will be.Ms.R I hope you are happy with your decision as I will continue to pull for our boys to win and I hope when they do they throw it in your face. You are a disgrace to the University and the entire SUNYAC and I hope you realize the butts you kick on your way up might be the same butts you have to kiss on your way down.

I had heard some rumors about this but surprised that it happened now.  Interested to find out some reasons about timing etc.  The direction of the program will be interesting.  Heard they got an Asst. AD running the show right now.  Sounds like some fun going on there.

I was right, O-State not only hired a never was they hired a never will will be!!Great job by the AD. Way to kill a program.I hope AD staff at O-State gets it shoved down thier throats by the team.By the way the job was offered to an assistant coach from years past and he said he would only coach for Ferchen,KUDOS to him,I'm glad to see there is still some loyalty to the coach that took O-state to the point they are at.

Oneonta Interim Baseball Coach
Ben Grimm named interim baseball coach

1/13/2012 9:55:00 AM
SUNY Oneonta Director of Athletics, Tracey Ranieri, announced that Benjamin Grimm has been named the interim baseball coach effective immediately.  Grimm will assume the duties as head coach for the 2012 season.

Grimm comes to Oneonta after serving most recently as the assistant coach at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.  His responsibilities were as the primary pitching coach, recruiting coordinator, camps coordinator, strength and conditioning coordinator and fundraising contact.  In his first year as pitching coach with the Continentals, the team's ERA dropped three full runs from the previous season while the squad enjoyed its longest winning streak in over six years.  In addition, he started a Fall Prospects Clinic and Mid-Winter Baseball Clinic.

Grimm is the President and head coach of the Sherrill Silversmiths of the New York Collegiate Baseball League where he has built a professional baseball franchise from the ground up.  He is in charge of all facets of the organization, which operates during the summer months with rosters made up of collegiate baseball players from around the country at all levels.  In 2009, Grimm started a not-for-profit organization, the Sherrill Athletic Club, Inc., which is set up to run the Silversmiths.  In 2009, he led the squad to a winning season, while in 2010, he guided the team to a league runner-up finish while having its first player sign a major league contract with the Atlanta Braves.

From 2007-10, Grimm served as the assistant baseball coach at NCAA Div. II Davis & Elkins College.  During his tenure as the pitching coach, the team increased its win total from nine to 25 and earned a ranking of No. 8 in the 2010 NCBWA Atlantic Region poll.  The pitching staff also improved its ERA by a total of 3.30 runs in the seasons he was there.

Prior to Davis & Elkins, Grimm served as the assistant baseball coach at Cazenovia College for the spring of 2007 working with the pitching staff of the Wildcats.  While there, he coached one All-North East Athletic Conference pitcher.

Collegiately, Grimm played two seasons at Onondaga Community College before finishing his career at Concord University in Athens, WV.  During Grimm's final season at Concord, the Mountain Lions finished 25-23 and made a run to the championship game of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference.  In 20 appearances, he was 4-3 with 38 strikeouts in 39.2 innings pitched.

In 2004, Grimm received an Associates Degree from Onondaga Community College in Recreation Leadership.  In 2006, he received his Bachelors Degree in Recreation and Tourism from Concord and, in 2010; he completed a Masters Degree in Athletic Coaching Education from West Virginia University.

Oneonta finished last season with an overall record 21-17 while advancing to the second day of the SUNYAC tournament.

From Oneonta Daily Star .....

ONEONTA _ Rick Ferchen confirmed Friday that he is no longer the baseball coach at Oneonta State, which apparently fired the two-time SUNY Athletic Conference Coach of the Year earlier this month.

"I would never abandon this team or my responsibilities to the college," said Ferchen, who added he has been advised by a union representative not to discuss the specifics of his departure from the college after 16 1/2 years as the Red Dragons head baseball coach. "I did not leave on my own. Again, I would not have abandoned this team at this time of year or my responsibilities to the college."

Oneonta State Director of Communications Hal Legg wrote Friday in an email to The Daily Star that Ferchen "no longer is affiliated with SUNY Oneonta" but did not say whether the college fired the coach who led the Red Dragons baseball team to its first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2010.

"This is a personnel matter, and the college does not comment on those," wrote Legg, who reiterated the college's no-comment policy when reached by telephone Friday afternoon. Legg did say that Jan.  distributed an email to its members from longtime OLL coach Rich Murphy on Thursday evening.

...............

Former assistant coach Tom Marks offered a no comment on Ferchen's exit via telephone Friday but said neither he nor Ferchen's other assistant, Edmeston graduate Mike Lum, were rehired after O-State went 21-17 last spring.

Ferchen went 400-240-4 at O-State, which reached 13 SUNY Athletic Conference tournaments and made 11 appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament since he took over for longtime coach Don Axtell in 1996.

"I have nothing bad to say about anybody," said Ferchen, the father of two Oneonta High graduates who added that he and his wife, Mary, will have to leave Oneonta if he is going to continue his career as a baseball coach. "Oneonta State's been good to me and I made a lot of good friends there. I think that's what I'll miss the most."

Ferchen's Red Dragons won at least 30 games three times in the last seven years, including a school-record 32 victories in 2005. They also won 31 games in 2006 and went 31-13 in 2010, when the program qualified for the NCAA D-III Tournament for the first time.

The SUNYAC's Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2006, Ferchen also coached at Division I Valparaiso and Division III Hobart. He is 715-497-17 in 31 seasons as a head baseball coach, which includes a 168-120-5 record at Hobart and a 147-137-8 mark at Valparaiso.

Niagara Falls native Ferchen, 56, graduated from Valparaiso in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. Although he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Ferchen decided to continue his education and earned a master's degree in arts and liberal studies from Valparaiso.
