A few years ago when I was still doing Cortland games, I remember this similar situation came up with Oneonta and Cortland. That being - who pitches in what game. This would've been 2006 and the pitcher in question was Chris Salamida. Ferchen decided to throw Salamida in the opener against Plattsburgh and he ended up going the distance in a 1-0 win. Oneonta played Brockport in the winners' bracket and lost with their number two and then just managed a field goal to Cortland's two touchdown's in the losers' bracket final. The year before that, Mike Schellinger was Oneonta's number one and he pitched in the opener and then Salamida went in the winners' bracket game against Brockport. Neither pitched during the final round when Cortland swept Oneonta.

Judes is a very good pitcher... and in my opinion (if he stays healthy) will be one of the top SUNYAC pithcers this year.  He is always tough... and is again, is a very good pitcher.

Just one comment on the first Brockport - Oneonta game.  The score when Rob left the game was 2-0, he ended up giving up 3 runs becuase one of the inherited baserunners scored.  It was a very good game for 7 innings...  Brockport just didnt' hit agains Judes.  Oneonta is team that he threw well against and always had good games with.  But they were the last SUNYAC team that he earned a win against...  with the 4-3 game (with the 10 K's) referenced by wetsu.

Hits happen... as it is a pitchers job to make the team hit the ball.  Stirkeouts are good but they are often times givne to much weight, but keep batters off balance and make them hit the ball is a pitchers job.  Making them hit the ball, cometimes hits happen... just don't put guys on yourself and hits don't always hurt you.  The extra runnes from walks do.

I am going to miss being at these games... but will follow as best I can on here and the school websites.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens... Brockport and Oneonta have most of their rosters back, but both lost pitching.  Cortland has most of their pitching back, but lost a lot from their postion players.  Cortland is still the favorite but the dynamic of getting there may be different this year.  At least at the beginning of the season.

A pitcher like Juedeshas a good day... and their bats score someruns and they can beat Cortland.  Same with any other good pitcher.

Also, I say that Scott Dubin is the first team SS on the All-SUNYAC team this year.  Anyone have any comments on a preseasong team?

Cortland drops 4-3 season opener at Salisbury, Md. today. Winning run via hbp in eighth inning. Game played in 36 degrees with 25 mph winds. Salisbury 7-0

When's the last time Cortland came out 1-3?  I get the Salisbury loss, but what's up with Mary Washington and Catholic?

Starvin,

Jumping ship a little early are we? I do remember you a few weeks back arguing a point about the C-State machine not having a potent enough pitching staff. and i believe you said more has been done with less or something to that affect.

I wouldnt say it was a bad job of recruiting by JB, its just his shifty underhanded wheelings and dealings that he calls recruiting have finally caught up with him. Karma can be a you know what. His over recruiting mayhave hurt him, or did he just lose the eye for good talent. JB needs to stop worrying about his players recruiting players off their summer teams and get out there and find the talent himself.

scuba,

nice call on simone and the .400 batting avg. Rough weekend for the soph, hopefully he can turn it around, looks like JB has confidence in him still which is good.

I'll admit its still early, but this weekend may have shown us that this may in fact be a down year for Cortland. The lineup he put out there does not scare anyone. Gone are the day of Zaccardo, Maycock,Robinson, Giammetta, Vittalone. This may have to be his greatest coaching job, lets see what kind of coach he actually is...whats the old saying about making chicken salad?

When  do some of the other teams around the SUNYAC open up

Mary Washington has a solid team year in , year out .They led Cortland  6-1 until losing lead late  in last seasons meeting . UMW won 26 games last year and 8 of their 14 losses were against NCAA region qualifiers ...2 that went on to the national championships. They beat 4 NCAA qualifiers....I don't think anything is up or odd  with them defeating Cortland .

BaseB13

Im not particular surprised about the results either.  Mary Washington is not a bad program at all and Catholic won 25 games and their conference tournament last year.  Salisbury is Salisbury afterall and it doesn't surprise me that that game was a battle.  Figured it would have been a coin flip.  Keep in mind these teams have probably been practicing outside a lot more than Cortland has.  I'm curious to see the outcome of the RPI/Cortland down south.  That will be a good indication of who stands to do well in NY this year.

i was at the salisbury/ cortland  game..... extremely tough conditions to play in or pitch in for that matter....   40 mph winds.... routine pops turn into doubles... don't read to much into these early games..... cortland will get it figured out....and get on a roll   just my 2 cents

Wow

Easy Coach D.  This is hardly the first time that Cortland has lost some bats and they've always seemed to reload just fine.  I'm sure that more people were expecting 3-1 than 1-3, but let's cut them some slack here.  That most likely is the first time outside after spending 3 weeks hitting indoors in a cage in bad lighting.  Let's give it at least a couple of weeks into April before hitting any panic buttons.

As for your comment on JB's eye for talent......we are talking the first 4 games of the season right?   More than half of this team was "talented" enough to rattle off 38 in a row last year, no? Not exactly Chicken >>>>.

Don't know about the rest of SUNYAC, but Brockport and Oneonta both open the week of 3/6.

StagnantFLY

If anyone thinks that Cortland isnt a top 10 team in the country has lost it. I would like to see those same teams play again after a few weeks and see the outcome...without the 30 degree weather and after teams have played.

AlleyCat

People need to realize that Cortland has been practicing indoors for 3 weeks on wood floors and in batting cages. Those teams they played have been outside playing on baseball fields. It would be like a basketball team shooting and practicing in a classroom and then going to play a team thats been on a court. Its not fair to look at them right now and say 1-3 they're no good. They will be fine and rattle off a bunch of wins and be right where they want to be come tourney time. They have great pitching and the hitting will come in time.

Northern teams first games need to be looked at with a grain of salt and not how the team will be for the season.

It was Catholic's second game of the season and Mary Washington's third (they played a double header two days earlier).  Believe me, DC area schools have not been outside for the last three weeks.

In other news besides Cortland....I heard the top 2 players for Oneonta have been suspended. I dont know for how long or who it may be. any news about that?
