Huge upset today on Long Island.

Farmingdale State 10 Cortland 5

Cortland blew a 5-3 lead and gave up seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined. The Dragons defense committed NINE errors and only one of the 10 Farmingdale runs was earned.

Mike Assmann allowed three unearned runs through six on just five hits. Brandon DeRosa faced just four batters and allowed three unearned runs and AJ Carney yielded four runs (one earned) in 1.2 innings pitched.

Kevin Jackson was 3-for-4 with two RBI and it appears he was the only Dragon to do anything offensively.

Pretty horrific way to start the weekend for Cortland. They'll be at Montclair State tomorrow and then Manhattanville for two on Sunday.

The Red Dragons of Cortland go down again in the tri-state area. Today...

Montclair 5 Cortland 4

Cortland's bullpen again coughed up a lead as the Red Hawks plated three runs in the seventh to tie the game at four and then one in the eighth.

The Dragons are 0-2 on their current road trip and will wrap it up tomorrow with two games against Manhattanville.

I realize I have come across as a Brokport basher and that has not been my intention. As someone who has been around the Cortland program over the past decade or so, I am jut getting tired of hearing "haters" bash Joe Brown and his program. The guy really has done nothing wrong, except dominate the NEw York Region and put an otherwise unknown conferencce on the map.

This looks to be Coach Browns weakest team in memory. IT looks like they could be exposed.

I think Cortland might just win this conference by default. Brockport seems to be having trouble pitching and fielding the ball, one can;t really tell how Oneonta is, as they havent really played anyone worth anything yet. Not to mention the "other" red dragons look pretty young. These three perennial SUNYAC all good be there in the end to duke it out for a SUNYAC slugfest.

I'd be lying if I said I would like to see someone other than cortland win it this yr, but I guess giving them a challenge to make them a little more battle tested for the Regionals wouldnt be such a bad thing.

guess we will see how good coach brown is this year.... looks like he's having a tough time figuring out who to play at some key positions. its easy to coach and motivate when your winning .... we will see..

PLattsburgh closed out their florida trip with a 5 game winning streak and moved their overall record to 11-4.  Not bad for a very young team, IMO.   They play at skidmore next weekend.  Hopefully they can keep it up.

I think that this shows that C Brown has been a little spoiled with the talent that he has had in the past. To me it seems that this year's team is going struggle to put up the usual Cstate offensive numbers. I missed them earlier and have yet to see a Cortland game, but with the way some teams have been playing on their spring trips, they may see some conference losses. Oneonta, Plattsburgh and Fredonia(?) seem to be in midseason form and are piling up wins. Was able to see New Paltz and Brockport in action and it doesn't seem like they have it together yet on the mound. Just some updates on teams not commonly discussed. Good luck to all and we hope the weather can cooperate with games upcoming in the next week or two!

With the ups and downs, strenght of schedules vs weakness or them, things happening that we don't know about.  I am guessing that this is going to be a very fun and interesting season to watch.

We on the outside don't know if someone is tired, or what ever... so until teams acutally decide it in the field we won't know what happens.  HOWEVER, we can all give our opionions which is what makes this type of board fun to participate in.

We ahve to remember to at least try to keep our comments grounded in some facts... not directed at anyone, just a precautionary statement.  The coach in my not wanting to throw any bulletin board material up for anyone.  LOL

Coaches have to deal with what they have on the field... and sometimes we work through things looking for the final solution for the end of the season.  They have to let their teams grow up and learn in the field.  I suspect that is what happened with Brockport in Arizona, and most likely with the Cortland games this weekend... Many of these players are the same ones who carried large loads last year for these two teams.  They didn't get bad overnight.  The new guys need to find themselves and I believe they will.

I watched it happen with my son as a freshman and I know it happens with everyone... its the lenght of the learning curve that sometimes makes us all wonder out loud.

This will be an interesting year on the field...

enough rambling.. off to watch the end of the Pitt game.  maybe 5 Big East teams in the sweet 16... wow.  Wonder if the SUNYAC will get 3 teams in the regional.

I will say this aboutBrockport, they did choose to play a hell of a difficult schedule in AZ. I commend the coaching staff there for not backing down and filing the schedule with some tough competition. It looks as though many of the other ocnference teams chose to cupcake up there early schedules. With a fairly young team in Brockport, it might have been a solid idea for them to do the same.

RSS.. Thansk for the comments about the Brockport team.  I was not on the spring trip with Brockport this year.  First time in 5 years... but from our experience with the athletic program there, and specifically the baseball team.  I've always found them to be of the very best character and always to represent themselves, the school and the conference in the best way possible.  No matter what the score is on the field.

It is very easy to just blast someone on here when its anonymous, true or not just to get a rise out of someone... it is nice to see someone go out of the way to make a positive statement about a team that they really didn't have to make.

As a Brockport fan, parent of a former player, and somone who knows most of the boys & their parents on this years team.  I am sure they are not pleased with the record, but know that they will continuely work to improve and will play hard everytime they take the field!!!

THANKS!

I don't think offense is the problem considering some of the offensive numbers that they've been putting up. I think the problem more so lies with the bullpen and the defense. If both continue to struggle, they're going to have to win slugfests.

Is the offense down this year? I think so, but it's still early. Previous Dragon teams probably would've racked up more than nine runs combined against Farmingdale and a down Montclair State club.

Oneonta has a 2-2 weekend in Penn. A bad loss 11-5 loss to Susquehanna, 3 runs in 9th gives Gettysburgh a 4-3 win. Oneonta rebounds for 3-0 win vs Gettysburgh with Filak dominating once again and a 18-4 win over Lebanon Valley with 4 home runs from the dragons

Its defense, plain and simple when you look at cortland so far this yr. Their ss and 3b are fielding a combined .851 and they have made 33 team E's in 16 games. Where are u going in the long run with that type of defense?
Its early but cortland has to shore up the D. Looking at the stats, they are prob fielding in the low to mid .900's as a team. That is piss poor and a sure way to lose games short of 1 hitters by the pitching staff. Hey, Im a cortland guy but a spade is a spade. If ur an infielder and ur not fielding over .950, u should be watching the games instead of playing in them! Defense is killing the red dragons so far in 2009!
In sports it's not how you start, its how you finish!

Is Will Groff playing third again? :)

FYI - I'll be at Wallace Field on Tuesday to check out the big regional blowout between the Dragons and the Rochester Yellow Jackets and then will more than likely return a week later to check out the Ithaca-Cortland game.

Classy John, throwing a dig at a kid who played professional baseball.  Then again, I'm sure you played baseball at a high level so you have the right to knock him.
