The real question is how far will any of these teams go and who has the potential to take home the title. Cortland is the heavy favorite going into each year with their resume of years of dominance. However cortland doesn't have a stud pitcher this year that can single handedly dominate a game, which leaves it up to their offense to produce victories, which is possible but wont be easy for them when they face nearly every teams number 1 pitcher. New paltz has limited talent, its freshman pitcher chris chismar is an exceptional freshman, however he is not as dominant as other pitchers that will be in the tournament such as mlb prospect dave filak(who has a chance to break chismar's record against oswego this sat). The playoff tourney will come down to the draw of the seeds, oneonta has an automatic victory when filak pitches which will weaken other teams if they waste their number 1 in the same game. My advice would be to save your pitching if you face Filak, this young kid has enough talent and heart to beat any d3 team in the nation and even many d1 teams which is why the mlb scouts love him. The sunyac championship to be taken down by either cortland or oneonta.

Kski,

You going to be able to update us on the Platts/ Cortland game?

I wish I could make the trip to watch.  If the games were in Plattsburgh, then the story would be different.  I'm hoping for a couple decent games.  Plattsburgh's track record at Wallace field is not very good, but they have a team that can keep themselves in the game.  If Cortland gives them the chance to capitalize, they will.  Cortland has the offense to blow it open and not look back, so that could be the difference.  Plattsburgh's hitting comes in spurts.  They will have to keep the pressure on Cortland if they want to so much as keep it close.

I'm predicting Cortland sweeps Plattsburgh to lock up hosting by scores of 6-2 & 9-3

Any other thoughts.....

Brockport sweeps Fredonia today. Junior Kyle Smith threw 8 solid innings for Brockport in game 1. Freshman James Bardenett threw 4.2 in game 2, Senior Brian Wolf got the win in relief.

hello all, i havent been on the board since last year. but its almost time for post season play so i thought i would make an appearance. first off id like to send my congrats to cortland on another dominating year. oneonta has made a strong comeback and will once again be in the sunyac tournament. brockport and plattsburg should also make the tournament unless something drastic happens. i found it very entertaining that people actually believed that fredonia or new paltz would creep in this year. fredonia was a fluke team last year with 1 good pitcher and oneonta had a down year last year. this year everything is back the way it should be. the usual 4 teams in and the bottom 3 getting about 3 or 4 wins in conference play. no doubt new paltz is much improved but are still far from making a conference tournament anytime soon. and fredonia is fredonia what more do i need to say. and oswego, you might as well call them the new sunyit  of the conference. now its just a matter of figuring out the seedings. can someone actually take down cortland this year? i dont think so but heres my theory of how it could be done. if you match up with cortland in the 1st round you have to throw your number 1 guy. if you arent you should throw your number 2 or 3 guy in the 1st round and hope you can out hit the other team. save your number 1 for cortland and if you beat them then you have a reliable number 2 or 3 left with some help from the pen maybe. too many times teams throw their number 1 in the 1st round not against cortland and then either lose or get crushed in the next round by cortland with their number 2. then they have to waste their 3 in the losers bracket then be left with an unreliable 4 or 5 starter. most teams have maybe 2 or 3 starters they can count on. use them wisely. basically you have to hope to have cortland have to beat you twice on the last day or have someone else beat them for you. no one except the '04 brockport team has been able to beat cortland twice in the same tourney. hard to do. this is just my opinion, either way i cant wait for the tournament 2 weeks away.

Cortland looks a little bit vulnerable this year ;) Especially to Filak and Oneonta. Cortland is deep but IMO doesn't have that dominant #1 guy like Filak.
Offensively, Cortland is head and shoulders above everyone else but a guy like Filak neutralizes Cortland's offense!
Having said that, Cortland is a tough double elimination tourney team due to their depth on the mound and the Offense is really good. Simone is a hitting machine!
Problem for the other Sunyac teams, u throw your #1 once and he is pretty much done for the tournament. Even if Cortland loses in round 1 or 2, they will feast on your #2, #3 and #4 guys for the rest of the tournament!
I think Cortland still wins the SUNYAC crown, but it might get interesting if Oneonta can grab a first or second round W!
Also, both Brockport and Plattsburgh played Cortland tough in game 1 of their respective DH's!
Should be interesting.......

Was at the oneonta new paltz game.  Filak seemed to have an off day but still went 7 strong with 9k's.  New paltz couldnt play defense to save there own lives reason being why the scores are so one-sided.  Cant take anything away from oneonta though, they kept the pressure on the weak defense all day and hit the ball well at times.

Chismar pitched game 2 and coming off the 20 k game didnt have his best stuff either. Stuck out 9 through 5 and a third but got hit pretty hard.  If oneonta stays hot they will be a tough competitor in the playoffs.  Crazy thing is if New paltz wins out, they make it in over brockport because they'll have swept brockport durin the season. Should be an exciting final weekend.

A lot of talk about the Cortland staff and not having an overall #1 and I do strongly agree with that. However, what Cortland lacks in having a #1 they make up for by having a ton of solid, very strong, number 2's - all who would be easy number 1's on any other team aside from Oneonta. Travis Ratliff, Adam Brown, Mike Assman, Scott Hartling, Mike Mahay, Kris Gentzke - any one of these could be a number 1 at another school (aside from Oneonta). Matt Tone and Jimmy Dougher were great pitchers that the staff was centered around, however know you have a staff with a bunch of 1a starters. Ratliff and Mahay are 2 great lefties. Brown and Hartling are the power rightys. Assman and Gentzke, are the rightys who mix it up (both still with good velocity, I don't think as hard as Brown or Hartling, I could be wrong though). Oh yeah and Cortland has just an insane lineup. Speed, Power, Contact... Simone has struck out like 3 times or something this season - that is ridiculous. Matt June 5 times. Nickel has 8 home runs, Gardner and Dimino with 5. Both Diminos are double digit in steals, along with Simone. Cortlands bullpen has been alright as well. Hourihan, DeRosa, DeGroat, Southworth have put up good numbers. Also, Mahay, Hartling, Gentzke coming out of the pen isn't too bad either.
Omar Minaya is a GREAT general manager. . .

Plattsburgh State clinches a playoff spot with a doubeheader sweep of Oswego State on Sunday afternoon, to finish with a 7-5 conference record. The Cardinals won the 1st game 21-12 grabbing the lead for good with 5 runs in the 5th inning to go up 11-7. Plattsburgh took an early 3-0 lead in the 1st but the Lakers came back to go up 4-3 in the bottom of the 2nd. Plattsburgh scored 3 more in the top of the 3rd to regain a 6-4 advantage that was short lived as Oswego scored 3 times in the bottom of the 4th to go back on top 7-6. After their 5 run 5th inning the Cardinals continued to extend the lead until it was 21-7 before a 5 run outburst by the Lakers in the bottom of the 8th made the final of 21-12. Plattsburgh had a season high in runs and hits as every starter had at least 1 hit to contribute to the 24 total hits the team cranked out. Danny Roeser led the way going 5-for-6, including a home run while driving in four runs and scoring three himself. Anthony Presto had four hits and scored four runs. Pat Shaughnessy went 3-for-7 with a home run and four RBIs. Tory Bouyea, Donny Coolidge , Andrew Gooch , Matt Burns, and Kris Cauchon added two hits apiece.

In the 2nd game won by the Cardinals 10-7, Plattsburgh again opened up with a 3 run 1st inning but the Lakers scored 3 in the 2nd and 3 more in the 3rd to grab a 6-3 lead. Plattsburgh narrowed the gap and finally went in front for good with a 3 run 6th inning to make it 8-6. Dan Tracy was the winning pitcher and improved his record to 8-0 which set a Plattsburgh State pitching record for most wins in a season. Pat Shaughnessy had three hits and three RBIs and Andrew Baio also had three hits and drove in 2 runs.
