Cortland down 4-2 after 3 and a half. IWU coming to bat.

The magic seems to have run out for the Red Dragons as IWU has a 4 run 4th inning and has 3 more in the 5th forcing Coach Brown to his bullpen again to bring in Mike Mahay who relieves Adam Brown. 1st batter he faces hits a 3 run HR and the Titans are now up 13-3.

Well the damage has been done and the Titans put up 9 runs in the 5th inning to go up 17-2. I don't think the Yankees could come back from that deficit with 9 outs left. It was a good run by the Red Dragons and 2nd place in the country is nothing to be ashamed of.

I was hoping for a good game regardless of who won. Just didn't want to see either team get hammered in the final .

Congratulations on a great run in the world series and a great season. I don't think anyone figured Cortland would be in the final game after that loss to Linfield on Saturday. To come back from that loss and beat #1 ranked Johns Hopkins, then undefeated (in the world series) Illinois Wesleyan, and then gain a measure of revenge against Linfield earlier today was a fun ride while it lasted. Way to go Red Dragons.

Cortland manages a couple of runs in the 9th but falls to IWU 17-5.

Outstanding, Cortland. Just outstanding. Nothing to be ashamed of at all. The entire SUNYAC should stand and salute those guys.

How soon can we start the debate on whether Plattsburgh is the third-best team in the country?

Nice article earlier on D3baseball's front page about Cortland's win over Linfield to reach the final game. Quote from Coach Brown regarding starting pitcher Travis Ratliff.

"That was one of the best performances I have seen considering his finger," said Cortland Head Coach Joe Brown. "We did not know if he would pitch again this year but you have to give credit to our training staff. They worked with him all week to get him ready."

Cortland State had 4 players make the World Series All Tournament Team.

Here's the quote from the Cortland web site:

"Four Red Dragons were named to the World Series all-tournament team. Senior catcher Andersen Gardner (Fairport) batted .500 (10-for-20) with four home runs, a triple, a double, five walks and 14 RBI in six Series games. Senior third baseman Steve Nickel (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) hit .462 (12-for-26) with two homers, two triples, two walks and 12 RBI. Sophomore second baseman Matt June (Colonie) hit .444 (12-for-27) with two doubles, a triple, three walks and six RBI. Senior center fielder Khyle Dimino (Brighton) batted .423 (11-for-26) with a double, triple, homer, eight RBI and four steals. Dimino hit for the cycle in a win over Johns Hopkins during Day 3 of the tournament."

IWU's Jeff Grodecki was named the tournaments Most Outstanding Player but it could just as easily have been IWU's starting pitcher Jason Pankau. He went 2-0 in the tournament giving up only 2 earned runs with 16 strikeouts in 16 and 1/3 innings. He was also chosen to the all tournament team. He was the only pitcher Cortland faced in the tournament that really silenced the Red dragons bats.

D3baseball's Top 25 final poll came out Wednesday and Cortland St ended up at #2. Oneonta also received 16 points and ended up at #33. Only other NY team to receive votes was St. John Fisher who ended up with 27 points, good for the  #29 spot.  Here's the link to the complete poll:

You'll be happy to know that the Plattsburgh coach handed the Dragons their participation keepsakes after the title game.

Truthfinder

Good. At least he knows what NCAA participation keepsakes look like now.

magicman

It will be interesting to see if any of Cortland's senior sluggers get drafted after the outstanding tournament Andersen Gardner, Steve Nickel, and Khyle Dimino had.

DogHead

I just want to say that after all the early season Joe Brown bashing, it was a pleasure to see Cortland make such a strong run at the National Championship.

Despite Cortland's team ERA of around 14 for for the World Series, they were resilient and kept putting runs on the board.

Andy Gardner was snubbed by D3baseball.com and the ABCA All-American selections but proved in the World Series that he was one of the best D-III baseball players in the country. It is a debacle that he wasn't the Most Outstanding Player of the Series but the Grobecki kid did have quite a Series himself.

Anyways, 400 wins, 10 World Series appearances and many critics later, Joe Brown can stand tall- and recruit some pitching!!!

Truthfinder

Does anyone know when the 2011 schedules come out?

magicman

Info from Jim Dixon that was posted over on one of the National boards a couple of hours ago.

"Oneonta State's Dave Filak is the first D-III player taken in the 4th round (134 overall) by the Atlanta Braves."

jack31

Congrats to Dave Filak.  I could only imagine the joy he felt when he found out.  I hope he makes it to the show and beats the Mets real soon!  I hope he represents the SUNYAC well.
