jdex

Cortland falls to 0-3 in 4-1 setback to Bridgewater, Va. in the second game Saturday. Bridgewater stopped Apprentice School 13-1 earlier in the day and overcame a 1-0 CSt lead in the third. Bridgies scored twice in the home half of the third against the RDragons and tacked on single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. A freshman B'water reliever shut down Cortland over the final six innings. Cortland and Bridgewater both slated to play at same Winter Haven, FL area sites in early March, though not against one another

Corts fell 7-6 earlier Saturday at Christopher Newport although again taking the early lead, 1-0 in the second frame on B. Mistretta RBI safety. CN pulled even in the third and went ahead 4-1 in the fifth when M. Shoemaker poked a three-run homer. RDragons converted four hits and four CN errors into a 5-4 lead in the sixth, though a leadoff walk and hit batter both eventually scored for CN in the bottom of the inning. A. Brevetti's single drove in the tying Cortland run in the seventh, only to have CN post the deciding run in its seventh. Another hit batter and walk helped load the bases and CN's final run  came across when Cortland failed to turn a doubleplay. CSt stranded the tying run at second in the ninth.
A. Schuldt drew the Cortland pitching start and worked four innings and into the fifth, with a 6h, 4r, 4er, 3bb, 5k line. Five hurlers followed. A.J. Valentino took the loss. T. Nagy went the final five outs with three Ks. Cortland pitchers received errorless backing. M. June swung a 4x5 bat, one of eight Dragons hitting safely. CN's C. Madden was 3x5 and drove in three runs.

You think Cortland is lacking this year? Or just beginning of the season rustiness?

Take a look at their start last year.  Cortland will be fine....as usual.  They will benefit from starting earlier than almost every team in the NY region (I don't know of any other NY team that has started?) and they always seek out quality teams to play.

Geez, posting at the same time, but, yes, Cortland will be fine. Gotta be disappointed with 0-3 liftoff, but Red Dragons are playing, albeit early, and were competitive against solid opponents who have the luxury of good (better) weather and earlier play. Red Dragon position players in place for the most part, mostly veterans. Arms race always a concern, and pitching has come into play even more because of restrictions to the bats. Run productions down as a result.

0-3 of course is a tough start when you have your sites set so high.  But, same record last year after playing the same 3 teams.  I wouldn't panic yet.

Just curious on where you guys are thinking the teams will finish, at least the top 4... I say 1. Cortland 2. Brockport 3.New Paltz 4. Plattsburgh. I dont see Oneonta making it this year after all the fallout there.

easy - I'm going with your picks, and I agree with you about Oneonta.
You may be able to switch Brockport and New Paltz depending on how well New Paltz' pitching staff does.  They may be good or VERY good this year.

Totally agreed with New Paltz their staff is extremely talented, just still need to see the depth around them get better. Granted last year was much improved I'd like to see the consistency  increase and I think I will. A split with Salisbury to open the season will give some confidence to a young team like that. The battle is for # 2 and # 3

Big Louie

I'm not so sold on the New Paltz's staff as a whole. The Chismar kid is arguably one the best around but the other guys still need to prove they are worthy.
