Moved this over to the SUNYAC board... as it is SUNYAC informaiton.  Anyone have any other rosters or schedules from the other teams?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many schedules are starting to show up on the web sites (minus the spring trip opponents)... and a couple of rosters too.  Here are links to the SUNYAC teams that have them up.

Does anyone know of any other NY teams have their schedule up?

Good Afternoon Fellow Posters,

My son played baseball at a SUNY school late 90's into 00's, i guess I am what you would call a casual observer of the SUNYACS. Now being retrired school teacher I hope to be able to more of a observer.
Was able to catch Oneonta vs. Brockport game at the tournament last year, while we were in town visting our nephew. Looking over the rosters and some of the stats from last year, looks like Cortland is going to do very well AGAIN this year. That pitching rotation looks devistating even with the loss of Dougher and Zgorzelski. Do any of the other school in conference have anything that matches up even close to that? Perennial rival Brockport looks down in the pitching department, loosing what looks to be there 1&2 in Dennstet and Scott. Oneonta loses Weber and Locke. Plattsburgh lost Dahlin. Anyone have any insight on New Paltz? Based on there record last year, it looks as though they may have overachieved a bit.

Looks to me like it could be a dogfight for the 2, 3 and 4 spot to get into the SUNYAC tournament.

Look forward to an interesting season filled with solid debating and sharing of information.

cant wait for season to begin   new to boards,  my son is just begining  his stay at cortland.   wishing him and the team some good luck... they seem real excited about the upcoming season.  real quality program and hes proud to be a part  go red dragons

Bob Maxwell

I want to echo Jim's sentiments...

Welcome to the boards baseballfan and bball14!

It looks like this season is going to be similar to the last few... with everyone gunning at Cortland fighting for a tournament birth.  Last season was interesting with the sturggle to get into the 4 team tournament, but it the end the same four teams as the two previous years qualified.

As baseball fan points out, everyone lost some pitching... the teams that emerge will be the ones who can replace the losses and have the team come together during the season.

While Cortland did lose Dougher... they have a lot of quality depth returing.  The one thing that they will need to find on the mound is for someone to fill the role that Dougher was in.  They have a lot of quality pitching... so it is likely someone will step up.  Offensively they are still very strong... and they are once again the favorite.

Brockport did lose two guys who gave them many quality innings, but they do have pitching returning, with 3 guys with a lot of SUNYAC experience as starters returning in Maxwell, Mascari and Shannon... and have their top bull pen guys returning.  The key to the season will be how quickly some of the good young guys can get comfortable pitching to college lineups.  They lost a couple bats in the middle of their lineup, but look to to once again be a strong offensive team as they have some returning guys who will post much bigger numbers with more AB's and have added a lot of speed and quality contact with several new comers.

Looking at losses from last years rosters it looks to me like Oneonta needs to replace the most pitching... but they've lost top guys each of the last few years and have always had strong pitching... Coach Ferchen always seems to come up with a couple of very good new additions.  they will need to lean on Ackerman for big innings and Connors and Juedes will need to step up too.  And they have a big bat that can hurt you at anytime in Martino.  And hopefully for Brockports sake Bedosky has lost his glove...  :D  Great catch to end BP's season last year!

Plattsburgh did lose Dahlin, but they still have Matt Kelly who can beat anyone on any given day.  They have a lot of depth returning from last years staff...  and with the way Coach Doorey uses his staff look like they really didn't lose much pitching from last year.  With Kelly stepping into the ace role in place of Dahlin and either Gent or Painter stepping into the #2 spot.  They have 6 guys who could increase their innings and give them solid pitching (Van Houtten, Davis, Tracy and Murphy are the others...).  And they are always tough with the bat... with Hughes, Welch and Kowalowski.

I didn't intend to do a breakdown when I started typing... but guess I have to finish... :)

After these four (who have made up the tournament field for the last 5 years...) there are three other teams that are looking to crash the conference party.

I look for New Paltz to once again be improved in coach Griffiths second year.  the key to their season may be who will replace the bat of DeKams...  Potter will need to repeat (and improve on) his pitching numbers from last year, and Donohue will need to rebound to from a tough year on the mound.  After that they will need for a couple of young guys to step up to give them quality innings to be able to break into the top four.

Oswego will need to replace DeSantis on the mound and Farrell and Peroli in their order... but they are always a tough game.  They wil still have Herandza and White on the mound and their lineup can put up runs.   They were a funny team last year as they beat both Brockport and Oneonta twice... they just need to be more consistent against conference teams and they could be at the tournament.

Fredonia has improved each of the last two years... and will most likely continue to do so.  They found a big bat last year in Malaney and have some others who look like they are ready to break out this year...  however, the loss of Huard will hurt them on the mound.  They need to find more pitching depth to be successful... if they do they could be a surpirse.

As I said, I didn't meant to write a review... but....

Happy Holidays to everyone involved in SUNYAC baseball!!!

baseballfan24296

Was able to sneak away from the presents and the Christmas story marathon on TBS to check some things out

I like to concentrate on pitching because to me it seems to be the most important aspect of the game.

Cortland
Will probably have the best staff out of any of the SUNYAC teams and has to be favored to once again represent the NY Region in Wisconsin. Jweid, Tone, Mattes, Bilyk, Serio, Hooper, Baker and Hauck look to be as tough as any staff in the country. Plus i am sure it is safe to assume that Coach Brown did not sit back and rest during recruting

Plattsburgh
To me this staff looks to be in the best shape other than Cortland. Kelley has number one potential and Gent and Painter look like they could settle in nicely behind him at the 2 and 3. Plus as Bob added they still have Van Houtten, Davis, Tracy and Murphy, to fill in behind them. Could it be more than just 0-2 and a BBQ for Plattsburgh this year in the tournament? This looks to be their best chance.

Oneonta
They were able to successfully move on without Salamida last year, it did help have Weber and Locke to fall back on. But who do they fall back on now? Weber, Locke and Lawrence are all gone. Juedes is going to need to step up and have a monster year for the Red Dragons.

Brockport
Of all the perennial powers they to me seem to be in the most trouble. With all due respect to Bob, I just don't see it in their returning guys. Shannon had a terrible year numbers wise following his ROY performance two years ago. Mascari's numbers look deceiving as he did not really pitch against any quality opponents until SUNYAC's. Maxwell's numbers ballooned towards the end of the season after an impressive start. This staff looks suspect at best if you ask me. They look like they will be throwing a ton of freshman out on the field.Couple this with a new coach, could equal problems for Brockport.

New Paltz
I guess you could call them my sleeper team. Looking at the numbers, I would match this staff's #1 with just about anyones. It looks to me that Potter is that good. Add Potter to Donahue and Shanks, you have a very formidable staff that can get SUNYAC wins.

Well i can no longer avoid the christmas story marathon, I would love to sit and talk shop all day here but it is christmas.

This question is for Bob. Is the rest of brockport's coaching staff still in tact if not who has replaced them? Just seeing if i recognize any of the new names

Enjoy the holidays, spring training is right around the corner!!!!

sunyacguru

New to the board, got a chance to watch alot of sunyac games last year and was very impressed with the baseball i saw. Just going to throw out some p.o.v's on some teams.

Cortland is going to be tough!!!! Everyone is always gunning for this team and they will be again. They lost some pitching but jweid and tone have some amazing talent and everyone knows coach brown will have pitching depth on his roster. And their offense will be solid as always. Zaccardo will repeat as player of the year and most likely find himself in the league after hes done at college. I got them finishing in first

I got Plattsburgh in second this year after they ties for it last year losing the tiebreaker with brockport for the 2nd seed in the tourny. Kelly can pitch, i saw him against oneonta and oswego, two of his three cg shutouts last season. He has potential to shut down any team on any givin day (including cortland). Now the problem is with the rest of their pitching, gent and painter i dont think can step up to fill the 2 and 3 roles, painter seems to be a reliever and gent didnt have same numbers last year as the year before.  Plattsburghs offense has potential to explode, they are going to have up to 4 lefties in the middle of the lineup, hughes, kowalowski, curcio, merola, doorey will have a field day arranging those bats in the middle probably mixing kelly in their to break them up. Could be a real tough team

Ready for a change? I got New platz in 3rd, a team on the uprise and you could see it last year. The potter kid is a solid solid number 1, he can go out and beat any team on any giving day. If they develop a solid number 2 and 3 they can be a force in the sunyac's taking over the posistion of oneonta and brockport from the past 5 years. They also will need a little more offensive output from some key bats. If they can get some run support for their top 3 then their pitchers can cruise through relying on their defense and coaching. Their coach in his second year has improved their program very much and i look forward to watching them compete against top sunyac comp.

Now this is where i get puzzled. Im going to say brockport in 4th but with a little hesitation. i really dont know much about who they have coming in for pitching but they need some. The guys they have left have not done enough to prove themselves in sunyac comp. I put them 4th because of their offense. They still have enough bats even with the loss of avery to make some noise and score runs. I see this team being a very small ball, defensivly sound team winning games 3-2, 4-2 and so on.

I really dont know much about who oneonta has coming in, i know the ackerman kid is good but you cant rely on one pitcher for all season. They still got some bats but if they get 6 or 7 put up on them in games they wont win. But as i said i really dont know much about the oneonta pitching.

look forward to continued disscussion with ya'll cant wait for the season to start. Anyone know where teams are headin this spring?

Bob Maxwell

sunyacguru, welcome to the board...

baseballfan, Coach Mees is back in an expaneded roll as the #1 assistant... Coach Waite is now at Hilbert as the recruiting coordinator for the whole athletic program.  Jake Dennstedt is working in the capacity of pitching coach.  Not sure if they will add anyone else or not...

It's really great to see a couple of posts about the teams where you share your insights into each of the teams and players on them.   Thanks for sharing your opinions...  So you know, I didn't put the teams in any order of prediction just as they popped into my head.  Not sure I could do that.. as there are so many unknowns at this point.

It is going to be really tough to call 2 through 7 this year... Once they start the games it will shake its self out as it always does.  I wonder if it will take until the final weekend (like it did last year) again this year?  I hope so... that was exciting!

I think the SUNYAC has developed and is a very highly competative league now, and is at least 5 or 6 deep who can compete with most teams.  I would love to see them work together and do something like what the Big East and ACC did in basketball agasint another conference each year (both in side and outside the region... )  Where the first - last from the previous year play each other.

Also, neither of you mentioned Oswego... what do you think about them?  They were up and down a lot last year, but should be in the mix again this year.

I can't wait for the teams to be out on the field... and I'm sure when that happens that we will see several surprises as we usually do.

Bob Maxwell

With this being the SUNAYC board, I support your though on the SUNYAC champions ( who ever it is...   ;D ) representing the NY region in Wisconsin in May.  And will be rooting for whoever it is to win the Regional...  But I wouldn't over look Ithaca to quickly as they look to have a lot of pitching that may serve them weel in a regional tournament.  Also, the NCAA likes to stick a team from New England in the mix too...

I wonder if the changes in conference affiliations will impact that at all?

Guess thats the overcautious old coach in me coming out... GO SUNYAC!!!

:D

See the SUNY AC board for a response about Brockport.

Jim Dixon

Brockport lost 8 starters but return 6.  They are Matt Beach,  OF; Mike Meola, 2B; Brent Nicholson, OF; Mark Caruana, OF; Rob Maxwell, 1B/P; Jared Perham, 3B/P.  Four starting pitchers return:  Tim Mascari, Jason Shannon, Maxwell, and Perham.   Jason Michaels, 2B; Ray Gizzi, P are transferrign to Brockport.   Catchers Jos Zaccardo and Bobby Warne were injured last year and will return.

The will miss Tim Wilson and Jake Dennstedt.  Wilson to be replaced by Tim McCormick

The new head coach is Justin Beach who was promoted from his assistant position after Mark Rowland stepped down as head coach to concentrate on his duties as Assistant AD.

sunyacguru

is it true sunyac is going to be going to a 3 game weekend series set once sunyit drops out, 9,7,7 or 7,9,7?

NYBaseball

Looks like its going to be another interesting year in the Sunyac conference.....but i can't see anyone not named Cortland winning it this year

Cortland returns plenty of offense in SUNYAC POY Mike Zaccardo and has the pitching to go with it....but if there is one concern it will be they don't have that shutdown ace.....jweid and tone are as good as they come but will they be able to do it on the big stage

Plattsburgh should be right behind them.....they have a formidable offense with the likes of hughes, kowalowski, and welch who is one of the most underrated players in the conference.  Kelly should anchor a solid pitching staff, but the question will be who fills in the spots behind him.  I agree with Sunyac guru that gent and painter aren't capable of doing this.  If they surprise, look out for Plattsburgh. This team will definately put together some wins in 08' but they will have to get over the fact they havent won a conference tourney game.  Until they do so, i dont know if they are a serious contender

Oneonta looks to finish in the 3rd spot with a solid core lineup returning with Holmes,Meyers,Randall, and Martino one of the better players in the conference heading that group.  Pitching will be the key to how far this team can go.  Ackerman returns and should be the ace of the staff, Juedes put up solid numbers 2 yrs ago as a freshman and should see more quality innings this season.  After that though there is a lot of question marks.

Brockport will be looking to replace a lot of offense from the looks of it, Nicholson and Caruana are two of the key returners.  The Pitching staff has a lot of questions as well.  Maxwell, Mascari and former rookie of yr Shannon will look to anchor the staff.

NewPaltz should continue to build on there sucess from last season.  Potter may be the best pitcher in the conference, but after that there needs to be more consistency.  The offense will have to replace Dekams bat, but look to have some quality guys ready to step in.  If they can do this look for them to contend for a sunyac tourney spot.

On today's edition of Campus Connection, Plattsburgh State head baseball coach Kris Doorey shares an emotional story about one of his players, Brian Mehan.  Brian is currently fighting a battle against cancer and is undergoing treatment in the Plattsburgh area. During our podcast, Coach Doorey discusses the impact Brian's situation has had on him and on his players.  He says it's important to "put things in check" and offers advice for other coaches and student-athletes facing difficult life situations.
