I believe Bilyk had a 20 strikeout performance in a high school game if I'm not mistaken which set a New York State record.  Hopefully this young man can have a productive year and I think he will.

In the end, I believe that Brockport's biggest loss will end up as Cortland's biggest gain and that's the emergence of Mike Avery.  In my opinion, he will make the biggest impact of any player new to Cortland's roster this year.  He provides Cortland with a tremendously gifted all-around talent who will benefit from being in a program with so much talent around him.  Don't be surprised if you see this kid get a chance to play at the next level due in part to his decision to transfer.  No offense to Brockport but the sky is the limit for Mike Avery due to the combination of his ability, coaching he will receive and the discipline that will be integrated into his game from being at Cortland.  With their reputation among professional scouts and recent success in getting their players opportunities to play professionally, I think he will get his chance.  He's a five tool talent who is going to help Cortland tremendously.  Brockport is a good enough program to survive despite his loss but I'm sure they wouldn't mind having him.  Nothing should land in Cortland's outfield with the speed they have between Avery, Coromato (I think he will have a huge year) and the Dimino brothers.  Not to mention Simone, Zilnicki, and Papillo who should see time.  I'm going to try and make as many games as I can, work permitting, this year should be fun!

Coromato can run and hit, i coached him in american legion for 4 yrs. he hit 26 3b's in 40 games one summer. left handed, gap power w/ speed. wore out left center, rt center and you won't find a kid that works harder or wants it more.\

Avery has got tools, draftable tools. + arm, big strong hitter and he can run. he will definately get better when Kerner gets a hold of him and works the hell out of him!

26 3 baggers, holy smokes!!  I got the impression after watching Coromato last year that he leaves it on the field day in and day out.  Must have enjoyed coaching him scuba!  I think he exemplifies what the program is all about and it's really nice to see from all of the kids.  There's no question that Avery will be worked very hard and I'm sure that he welcomes it.  Brockport had a very formidable outfield last year with Avery leading the way and as I said before, it must be very disappointing for them to not have him there anymore.  The Brockport staff seems to have done a commendable job in helping him make the conversion from SS to the outfield which is where he is best suited.

jason simone was on that team as well. we lost to george jweid in the district finals. we couldn't beat georgie, he was lights out when it counted most. the year before that, dan maycock was also on the team with coromato and simone

guess theres not much to talk about on this board besides cortland?

Bob Maxwell

Scuba,  Good catch on that... and thanks for the chuckle... we all need one with the cold and wind today!  At least here in Buffalo... 18 degrees and 30-40 mph winds.  Baseball season must be just around the corner...

???

Guru, I was going to say that while this is all interesting reading, lets not annoint Cortland the national league title just yet... after all, didn't the mets just trade for Santana?  That should help them compete with Cortland...   ;D

There are other teams and players in the league... its not Cortland and the JV's teams from pick any high school leage in the state.

I agree, they are a team with a lot of talent and depth, but they will still need to win the games on the field.  And, they may end up doing that... but lets not sell everyone else completely out of it yet.  As there are teams and players that are going to give it everythign they can to win too, and not just roll over and spaz out when they play them.

Yes, anyone who does end up beating them will need to play at the top of their game... and in order to win the SUNYAC title over Cortland they will need to have a great weekend of top level ball.  But it has happened before... and I am sure it will happen again...

After all, they keep starting the season over again every year... don't they?

I think that all the conversation about Cortland is great... as they have represented the conference well on the national level.  And yes, evern though they don't wear jersey's taht say SUNYAC on them... they have represented everyone in the conferece.  Also, I am guessing that no one wants to put them selves out there as a target by suggesting that anyone else can win it... or perhaps we just don't know who the players are on the other teams.  Who knows?

SO with all that being said, I am looking forward to a great season... with everyone getting their shot at the title onthe field.  And lets hope that at a team or two can reach the level of beating Cortland a time or two so that we (the SUNYAC) get two teams in the NCAA tournament like we did in 2004!

NYBaseball

No one is talking about anything but Cortland on here because there isn't really anything to talk about but them.  I realize games are played on the field, but i just can't see anyone really giving Cortland a game.  Plattsburgh looks to have the most returning, but until they get over the fact they havent won a sunyac tourney game in who knows how long....they wont be beating anyone whens it matters most.  Brockport lost an awful lot of talent as well, and i just don't really know what to expect out them.....there probably a few years away from being a real contender again.  Oneonta has a decent amount of offense returning, but that pitching staff has to really step up or they wont be going anywhere.

To basically sum it up.....everyone is going to have there work cut out for them to even be in a game with Cortland.......it doesnt hurt either when there able to not only recruit H.S kids but they recruit the D1 programs in NYS and the other sunyac teams as well(coromato,avery)....there ought to be a rule against kids transfering in conference

I hear Cortland just got Jim Basnight back for another yr......great addition if this is true

That can't possibly be true. Basnight played four years at Cortland plus he was at Saint Bonaventure as a freshman giving him five years of college baseball. From what I can tell, he doesn't have any eligibility left. He may be back as a grad assistant but certainly not as a player.

That is one of the funniest things I have read this yr. + k for NYBaseball, being sarcastic.
For all that don't know, there were a few guys on here last yr torturing Jim Basnight, a cortland OF, because the NCAA granted him a redshirt(i think medical).
Let me put this out there, if the kid wasn't a good player, would have anyone cared?
None the less, thanks for the chuckle NY!

NEWSFLASH..........................
This just in,
Scott Landers aka underbite and Scott Brown aka Stown, both Cortland All American pitchers in the mid-late 90's were just granted orthadontral redshirts by the NCAA and will pitch this yr for C-State.
Big pickup for Cortland Baseball and the Cortland county Association For practing Dentists!

Bob, as you mention in almost every post we realize that teams need to win on the field but thanks for the reminder.  Also, let's hear some people talk about the other teams and their players in the conference if you're tired of hearing all the talk about Cortland.  No one ever said you can't talk about other teams so instead of complaining let's hear what people who follow other programs have to say.  Give us your opinion on Brockport's starting nine and their rotation and we can all comment on it.

JM, relax on the Basnight situation, I think the comment was meant to be a joke.

In DIII baseball where kids pay their tuition is exactly why no rule against transferring should be instituted.  If a kid is paying to go to school and realizes he's not happy or made a bad decision you can't punish him and tell him he can't leave unless you want to pay for his schooling.
